Sennelier La Petite Aquarelle Review & Comparison with Artists Line

Sennelier La Petite Aquarelle Review & Comparison with Artists Line
Let's see how the new student grade Sennelier La Petite Aquarelle compares to the artist Sennelier Watercolors! I will also compare it to other student watercolors in the same price range.
Pros:
Price: I paid $27.49 for the 24 color set with a palette at Jerry's Artarama: www.jerrysartar... (retail price is $55)
Vivid transparent colors
Suitable for glazing
Color numbers match professional range (although colbalt blue and primary red do not seem the same as the pro number color)
Palette is lightweight and comfortable and the mixing area can be removed for cleaning or if you need more mixing space.
Paints preform exactly like the pro range (every watercolor brand seems to have a unique feel to them and these "fell" like sennelier pro paints, if you like these you will like the pro versions as they behave the same)
When painted side by side with the same colors of the artist line the colors are the same or only slightly different, for instance as the ultramarine dried I could see what looked like a bit of white filler separating out. I would not have noticed it if was not right next to the artist version.
These are as good if not better than other student brands I recommend in vibrancy (such as Van Gogh, Grumbacher academy, Cotman or Sonnett)
Lightfast info is on the box (but no pigment info) and they use the ASTM method: 16 colors are ASTM 1 (excellent lightfast), 3 colors are ASTM 2 (Very Good Lightfast) and 4 colored are ASTM n. r. (not rated)
These colors mix cleanly and would not hinder a beginner learning how watercolors work.
Cons:
I can't find pigment info on these paints. I could assume that the pigments match the color numbers BUT I am fairly certain that the cobalt blue is a mix and not pb28 and primary red shared a color code number with standard Alizerian crimson and it just does not look like PR83 to me. The box has lightfast ratings but not pigment info. That is really the only "con" for me.
Bottom line, go for it! I think these are decent paints and a great value. I recommend refilling the pans with sennelier artist tube paint as they run out and you have a great start to watercolor success. Let me know if you have questions in the comments below. I've watched this video about 4-5 since you published it just over a year ago because since before you did this review I've been wanting these. I finally decided, after what seem like forever, to get them when saw the price drop to $33 on Amazon just a few weeks ago and right when I was about to get them it when up to about $50-52. So I patiently waited and watched it and they just dropped to $29.96 a couple of days ago so I ordered them and now I'm about to watch this again because I'm about to swatch them and because I love your videos and reviews! Also, for anyone else that is still on the fence about them, they are right now even cheaper at $28.79 on Amazon!!

OMG what a fantastically straightforward and in-depth review of student grade watercolor sets!! 😍. I can’t even begin to tell you how overwhelmed I’ve been as a newbie trying to figure out which paints to buy and all the other supplies, such as a palette to go with it. This video fairly compares a lot of the brands I was considering and the rating you gave at the end helped validate what I was thinking. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! 💕🌷✨ For any other newbies out there, I started off with a Phoenix brand on Amazon which is vibrant and creamy but didn’t seem to be able to do a lot of the wash or layering techniques that are shown on KZread videos… super frustrating. I’d also bought two small sets of 12 (Prima vintage & Paul Rubens glitter/metallic) that I love and I wanted to be able to somehow add the pans to a larger palette, to avoid having three different cases to carry around. I’m 7 months pregnant so simplicity and lightweight is key for me right now lol. Went with the Mijello 18 well plastic water tight palette, which I can ingeniously put the Sennelier La Petite Aquarelle 24 Half Pan set paints into, along with my other two sets via magnetic tape (check out the reviews on Amazon for the palette and you’ll see how this can be done!). And Voila! A nicely sized case that’s not too big, which allows for a lot of full pan sizes along with adding my 24 half pans of additional colors, and two huge mixing areas still left over! Whew so glad that the process of endless research has ended lol 😅

I think Sennelier absolutely make the best student grade watercolors in pans. I find the W&N Cotmans TUBE paints really pigmented, however, their 1/2 pan paints I find really weak in pigment.

The Sennelier umber colors are made with natural pigments (PBR7), instead of synthetic oxides, so there is some variation between batches. I only use the artist line and there is a difference between raw umber from tubes and pans, the tube paint is more yellowish and the pan is more grayish as I think raw umber should look, though I use both for different effects.

Hi Lindsay! I a have a set of Sennelier La Petite Aquarelle and I enjoy using them a lot. Granted, I'm not a professional artist by any means, but these are really nice paints. One thing to note too, you are correct, the plastic tray that contain the paints can be popped out as well so if you want to make an entirely new travel set with separate pans in there, I'm sure it can be done.

Yay! The review/comparison I was waiting for! Thank you so much, Lindsay! I've got their 12-color student grade set and I love it! I was just very curious to see how they compare to the artist grade. I agree with you: the cobalt blue hue is the weakest of the 12, I would have preferred a prussian blue instead.

The Van Gogh line of Royal Talens are also high quality. I agree about Lukas, great value. The Sennelier are definitely more washy and transparent--the style of French watercolor is often line and wash so they don't favor the opaque, saturated color in my experience. I'd be very comfortable recommending the Petite Aquarelle to students.

I just swatched out my Sennelier today and I love how they layer- I always overwork my paintings too- so I was so happy to hear of a paint that is basically perfect for that! I did see the browns are very weak- but with some layering they are good- they have a glow about them that I like, I cant explain it, I do like them a lot- and the price cannot be beat. I almost worry that it might go up- 27 bucks for 24 colors?? and i LOVE the case!! they are set apart from all the student paint sets I own. Mine already have divets in them as well- they are soft- I guess that would be one complaint, and the browns- 2. The browns tho can be darker when layered- so I guess I have to take that one back- All in all I am thrilled with them

I am sure the price will rise, these are new, usually new things are put out low to test the market, if they get popular the price will go up, if they are not the price stays low and possible the product goes away. I dont think that will happen tho:)

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I received it very quickly and was able to play a little. I gave my try at painting poinsettias like you have, but I wasn't able to achieve the same intensity in color. I did wonder if it may be the paper I have, but I am loving this. My only "drawback" is that I do wish it came with a brush, but that's just a personal opinion.

Hi there. I've been enjoying all your watercolor videos lately. Even rewatching a few. I've been on the fence between getting the La Petite set or White Nights. They're both between $30-$40 right now on amazon (24 set). I was just wondering what your opinion on these 2 were. What's your take on what each set is good for? Like, Sennelier is good for floral - or so I've heard being mentioned plenty before. There aren't many videos on the La Petite set (or speedpaints). So I've been perplexed about how each perform during a painting. I wish I could just get both at once. Lol.

Usage wise and looks wise they are so very similar! Sennelier obviously wants to put their best foot forward with the LaPetite Aquarelle because they are really high quality and I think it is smart because if student like them once they upgrade they will pick selennier. They don't offer as many colors in this range but the colors they do have are fabulous. I recommend getting the 24 pan set if you can find it at a nice price. I am happy with my purchase:)

So, like 3-4 questions: Now that you’ve gotten to try Shinhan paints where would you place shinhan pro vs sennelier la petite? Someone told me the Shinhan pro is similar to mission silver class? But that it’s better than the Cotman, so vs Sennelier la petit? (I’m on a budget and I am looking into getting pro paint vs student lines, but like going with the cheaper professional stuff.) Also! You did a huge video on all your paints which I watched like 4x last night because I am kinda really looking for one of the better quality student or just gunna go straight to a pro line, but maybe start small. (I read that if I practice often maybe going for a pro one would be better, but I’m still learning water color.) 2. I noticed you said you didn’t really touch your Hydrus in the video! One of my favorite KZread artists has used Dr. Martin’s Concentrated water colors, I’m used to using their black ink and went to colored inks and have been really looking into buying the concentrated and then they changed the formula to radiant watercolors. .I was wondering if you had a video going over the Hydrus or even the Radiant Concentrated Water Color by dr. Ph. Martins? (I’ve noticed people keep saying hydrus or liquid water colors are hybrids, but idk what they mean by that yet. .) - That being said, I have liked ink more than water color and figured they’re less lightfast which is why I like them, but I’m going to be trying my hand at semi photo realistic mixed media art and I’m trying to get all of my supplies together so I can really try my hand at that kind of art. I’ve been wanting to do it for years and would love to see what an ex-art director would say. I’d ask my past instructors, but they’re not responding to me. :/

As for pro paint I read up on the comments for Shinhan PWC and SWC, then looked up the prices for those. I also looked into the prices for Mission Gold, Qor, Winsor Newton, Sennelier pro paint sets, and researched blick, Jerry Artarama, Amazon, and Ebay trying to compare prices. I think by far the cheapest prices for pro paints among those websites is on amazon and are the Shinhan PWC 24 ($90.54,) Mission Gold Class Water Color Palette 36 ($71 Amazon,) and Qor ($72.03.) (I also found empty water color cases 30-48 pan for like $13-18 Amazon.) I’ve been like bouncing on whether or not to go for the Dr. PH Martin’s Concentrated Water Color ($68 @Ebay free shipping) or go for a student line then pro line first. . . Not sure what would be best to start off with for the art style I really want to practice. Emm, the semi photo realistic mixed media art I like has a lot of florals, and animals. And the artists I like do both anime/manga styles as well as semi photo realistic/slight surreal/abstract. I have like a large mixed media canson 98 lb. paper and a bunch of mixed media sketchbooks that will probably handle my practice, I will be buying arches water color pads since they’re so cheap on Amazon rn. (Amaaaazing - I never find them at $18 T.T) . . Idk if this extra info would help, just saying semi photo real mixed media probably puts into perspective a certain degree of layering. .Just putting all of my thoughts out there.

earlier in the summer I bought the senniler 12+6 at jerrys and after your review I do feel less bad about buying (though I would have liked that olive green in the La Petit..) I was wondering, in your artist set, do you have trouble mixing oranges? there's a lot of reds but I feel like they all lean towards blue/purple, so when I mix them with the yellows the results are peachy. It's a bit frustrating because I like to mix my oranges and also work with less colors (like 5 or 6 max). Any advice/luck?

try your bright yellow color, with the bright red (on the +6 color side of the palette) and a smidgen of Venetian red. I think you will get a rich orange, the Venetian red had a really strong orange undertone but too much and you might get a muddy color.

Thanks so much for the tip! The bright yellow is Napels Yellow Deep in my palette actually. I've tried this a couple times and am ending up with an earthy orange (not vibrant, but an interesting color..). So I actually just had the idea to try using burnt sienna (instead of the v. red) and I feel I'm getting just a little closer to orange I may want, but both ways gave me some nice earthy colors that I really like.

Check prices where you live and see what is economical because most artist quality big brand paints are excellent but price can vary greatly country to country.

I really don't know why Sennelier takes such an "expensive" wrap. Daniel Smith is a bit over twice per ml open stock at around $1.40 but Sennelier (artist quality) at 64 cents is only about 5 cents more per ml open stock than M. Graham. I have and like both but MG can't touch Sennelier's luminosity. In my view with the exception of a few pigments, its Daniel Smith that's too pricey for what you get. I guess its just popular reputation built over time with word of mouth... should be checked out first before the cash outlay. I do agree that artist's against student, Sennelier's come closer than at least the other two brands I'm familier with.. Grumbacher and W&N.

Hi Lindsay! I have the Koi watercolor travel set, and was wondering how that compares to this. Would this be a higher quality? I do like my koi, but they are often opaque and sometimes I feel my painting getting muddy. I also like the layout of this palette much better! Do you think this would be a good investment even though I already have a different set?

  • @thefrugalcrafter

    @thefrugalcrafter

Koi is more opaque and you are better using more colors than mixing a lot with koi, it is not a bad set but I think most of the colors there are mixes already and have opaque filler so yes the sennelier is a better set and more transparent. they are quite different, you might find you like one set for some subject and the other for different things. Stick with Koi if you like it, I have a koi set and I enjoy it and I can let me kids use it without worry.

Are there different sets in the La petite's, like there are with the 34 pc. Mission Gold? In MG, I have the Asian Set, but I know that there are 2 others. The European and the US sets contain different colors.

I wonder if by the time they use up a student pan they might buy a tube of the artist line to refil it since they use the same color numbers. It would not be so costly to upgrade one color at a time, maybe? Or maybe they will come out with individual student paints if these sell well.
