I used to work for Starbucks and greatly respected the company and Shultz. The wages were low, but the culture and camaraderie were great. I still love the brand, but I feel a little brainwashed. The leadership's cost-cutting measures often resulted in my store being understaffed. Baristas often had to work overtime and perform redundant manual tasks, which could lead to physical injury, not unlike what many have experienced in manufacturing settings. Wage increases were not tied to performance - rather they were given evenly across the board. The company's "the customer is always right" mindset led to many people - myself included - being verbally harassed by the archetypal "Karens" that have gone viral on social media. Yet, the company used its "perks" and socially liberal culture as window dressing to mask the sweatshop-like conditions of working there. I had known of the company's past union-busting efforts but thought that the Buffalo efforts were going smoothly. As it turns out, Schultz's "listening sessions" appeared to be another attempt to prevent unionization. Isn't this the same guy who owns an $18 million luxury yacht? C'mon man!

@Vic M Being a barista is absolutely an acquired skill. It takes training. Training seldom pays full wages for that period. For whatever reasons people like getting more than just a cup of joe and are willing to pay for it. Those doing the physical labor of providing the many variations of the product deserve to be paid a living wage. Line workers cranking out identical products on a daily basis have unions. They are paid fairly well and have benefits in a majority of cases. Even if for many the job is a stepping stone or temporary gig, why would they be entitled to less than enough to live on. Imo food service workers get the least respect (from both their customers and their employers), lowest pay, and thinnest benefits as a job category. It's about time they were offered a union. This argument goes back decades. Btw, the people working weekday shifts at McDonalds are employees at their primary job. Someone has to run the operations until the cheap labor gets out of school for the day.

Cleverness is a very important human trait. These modern day “job creators” (ahem, capitalists) are some of the cleverest amongst us. That doesn’t guarantee them wisdom, morality, or justness. It’s our imperative, as a society, to be clever, and stand together as a united worker class to demand wise, moral, and just business practices and working conditions from those lucky and fortunate enough to lead these enterprises.

One might think that Unions are or coming back but there not as many won't work the decades required to get a pension from a company that has them. The Closed Shop that makes you to join a Union to work is trouble because many wouldn't join if there was a choice and shouldn't have too. The harsh reality is that Unions take more than they give from.members in dues that their often paying more for the lifestyle at the top of them. Indeed about the only time those paying dues meet Union officials is when their up for re election and vanish as quickly afterwards. Like many business which they actually are only give a darn when contracts are up for negotiations and don't miss meals or march that much as those on strike ever will. Getting into to the upper echelons to live off its members labor is vastly more profitable than being in its trenches and many that have are about as disconnected as its gets from where they began....

Indeed they hired several senior citizens who might be in their 70s and is so understaffed its almost a ghost town save for those at the self check lane. The harsh reality is the days of working for decades at one company then drawing a pension is all but dead and Bernie might not want to acknowledge its reality. Those behind the counter at Starbucks don't see themselves being a Barista for decades but a few years at most and its Union if it happens will collect millions in due each month knowing they never have to give back. Years ago a group called Teamsters for a Democratic Union the TDU wanted more local control of their dues and interests but were crushed by the national organization since it challenged its control. It often fired local Shop Stewards who were popular and in some cases emptied their accounts saying it was better in the hands of those above them....

To Jake.. I would agree but often the more powerful the Union the more those at the top are out of touch living of its members. Years ago Local 7 a Union for grocery store workers in Colorado which had a family running it like their own personal ATM and charged everything to it including their vacations. Ousting them was only possible because the rank n file had enough and the rules they broke using dues for everything but legitimate Union expenses. This was on top of their salaries they drew and the lifestyles of those at the top of Unions grow more out of touch the longer they remain. Indeed Jimmy Hoffa's son all but inherited the Teamsteers after his father vanished now presumed murdered by those used it too as a cash cow. Yet in the decades he was there until retiring the Union crushed a movement where local chapters would have more say in the finances etc. often emptying its coffers like thieves. If a Union doesn't like those making waves they can kick out a members which can also mean they might not work again in that field. Starbucks knows organizing would cost them money big time but also are aware that its Union would be more for those in charge but they to count on turn over since like any for profit enterprise its dues go up the ladder often without a return going back down.

Sorry you chose to post this comment about Sen. Sanders because he does not deserve such a slam. I thought just about everyone Out There knew by now that he became a millionaire by being a very successful author. That you apparently didn't know is unfortunate. Could you perhaps at least google "Bernie Sanders" and get a bit of an education about him before you post anything else that's ludicrous? To re-cap a bit of his later-in-life financial success.... Sanders wrote a very good book--that came out in November 2016, a week after Trump's election. "Our Revolution" sold extremely well, was #3 on The New York Times Bestseller list and also published in China, England, France, Germany, Serbia and South Korea. Thanks to his international publishers, he did a book tour to Germany, England and Ireland over the 2017 Memorial Day holiday on a trip that perhaps got extra attention because of Trump's "ascendancy" to the presidency. As just one example, Newsweek reported, "Just days after Trump received a frosty reception on his first trip across the Atlantic since entering the White House, Sanders earned a rapturous reception from more than 1,000 students at Berlin's Free University." His many crowds were reported large and enthusiastic everywhere. Bernie's 2018 book, "Where We Go from Here: Two Years in the Resistance," is also a fine, informative read. An Illinois native, I first learned of Bernie in 1963 from a Chicago newspaper photo, still in circulation, of a policeman "helping" him to the ground for marching against segregation. Since then, he has been on the correct side of our nation's major issues (meaning those important to me), including civil, economic, environmental, gender, racial and social justice...and peace. At 84 now, and finally retired, I decided I to try to give a bit of time, every day whenever possible, to assure that at least a few more of us know a bit more truth about the true public servant I believe should be into his 2nd term as President.
