Semi truck gets fairing stuck at the 11foot8+8 bridge

////// Support us on Patreon at / 11foot8 \\\\\\
On Friday the 13th, a semi truck tempted its fate at the canopener bridge and got briefly stuck. The driver dropped the air suspension, thereby lowering the cab just enough to escape the grip of the hungry beast. Even though damage was minimal, enough unintentional contact was made for this to count as #160 since 2008.

In Europe you can rent/drive maximum of 3,500kg on a regular driver's license (in the UK, up to 7,500kg if you passed your test before 1998 IIRC, not sure about mainland Europe). Similarly, a vehicle with maximum of 9 seats (okay, 16 seats if it's for voluntary/social purposes). All good rules in my opinion. In the US, most states allow driving a vehicle up to 26,000lbs (11,800kg), or any recreational vehicle (remember, some RVs are 3-axle buses without the seats!)... in my view, such allowances are insane, especially considering the driving test is so easy in many US states that a 10-year-old would not struggle to pass...

Dropping the airbags can lower you about 6-8" maybe a little more (I'm only guessing because I never measured it) but a foot, NO. As you see he hung up the truck, the truck is lower than the van trailer, meaning when dropping the airbags it was able to come free. It's not gonna drop a foot. Maybe something like a 13' bridge. The reason "I've" done that in case you're wondering why we truckers take that chance is because times I've done that the place I was looking for would be in that area and by the time i realized it would be past this low bridge there wouldn't be nowhere else to go but forward or back up ever how far it may be to another road. But like I said if it was that low then I was pretty much backing up. As you see here he had another choice and enough warnings. He could be an inexperienced rookie because an experienced trucker would not have tried it.

    There are sensors there that make the light turn red when an overweight truck is detected so that they have to stop. The intention is that while stopped they have time to read the big flashing sign. The reality is that drivers either run the red light or ignore the sign entirely. What they should really have is a "no trucks allowed" on that particular block, then there's no chance trucks will make this mistake. There's literally nothing on that entire street that large trucks need to go to. The only reason this happens is because this street links directly to the highway so trucks think they can just go straight down it. Maybe there should be a sign at the highway exit, people tend to actually look at those.

He obviously didn't care about the vehicle - he was just the driver - not the owner.

    Not gonna lie 5 years ago when I began car hauling, in Lansing i went past bridge height 12'9 and the jeep on top behind my bunk roof opened like a can of sardines, while everyone was watching me in shock, about 30 seconds into it I reversed real quick and shot out, the insurance never found out or police but because the car was from the auction I ended up paying 6,500 cash at delivery to the owner (that's what he paid at the auction) he was pissed . Anyways from that day on I never tried my luck with a bridge, I learnt my lesson.

    If the "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" sign read, "OVERHEIGHT VEHICLES MUST TURN", then it would actually be complete, valid English, and perhaps fewer drivers would misunderstand it. On the other hand, it could read, "VEHICLES OVER 12' 4" MUST TURN". That would save having to look at two separate signs in different locations, then doing some computation in one's head and deciding whether to continue, stop, or turn, all within a split second. Whilst at the front of the queue, waiting for the traffic lights to change, drivers have plenty of time for this (as did this one), but if the lights are already on green with traffic moving, it's a disaster waiting to happen. As it is, the flashing "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" sign distracts from the 12'-4" signs, so that doesn't really help. All things considered, it's not surprising this happens so often. I call it bad signage. That aside, it's odd the rear-most axle of his trailer doesn't want to roll backwards.
