Boxtruck wrestles with 11foot8 bridge while train crosses

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On March 13, another rental boxtruck got stuck at the canopener and ended up in a bit of a wrestling match with the bridge. Right at that time a train crosses the trestle as well. After about 10 Minutes, the bridges finally lets the truck go, but the driver still has to deal with the impatient car drivers, before he can finally get his busted truck out of there. This was crash # 144 since 2008.

There is no special about the bridge. It is only lower than some others. The special are the drivers that ignore signs that warn them from a disaster. And that there is not only one such driver - no, there are many - too much for a civillized society. But anyway - you need luck to see a crash. The camera watches the whole day...

Some of them look more like "hey, I'm not getting caught up in that, let's gtfo". And to be honest, I can relate. I know a particular overpass where the speed limit is 70 kmh, but I never drive that fast there because I know there's a fairly sharp curve at the top with a nasty bump in it. Some BMW overtook me just before the base of the incline at maybe 80 kph, and when I reached the top, I just saw the driver climb out of his totalled wreck on the other side of the road. He looked ok from a distance and the oncoming traffic had (just) managed to stop in time, so I chuckled to mystelf and drove on. Thinking back later I guess I should have left my phone number or so, but at the time I was like "nope, not my problem".

Normally the train engineer would not be happy if he knew he had just gone over a bridge that has just been hit by something. If a train controller is aware that a truck had hit a bridge he would stop all trains using the bridge until it had been checked out. Presumably this bridge has been suitably reinforced to prevent damage to the bridge by over-height trucks.

Vehicle off the road for weeks losing them rental income, and then a vehicle back which has had to undergo substantial repairs. The customers probably usually paying (at least here in the UK you’re not covered for damage above cab height by the rental insurance) so maybe they sell on for scrap/repair, and get a new one. Although quite how they pay I’m not sure.... So am using as it is to watch, I do somewhat pity the poor drivers really as there in for quite a bill. But again if like in the UK you are always warned very clearly about such things on pickup and have to sign to confirm you understand, and we have a LOT more low bridges here. Reminds me of my friends car rental when he was told there was a £100 surcharge if it was brought back with the tank empty, but he could take the unlimited collision damage waiver for £25 and wouldn’t owe a penny if he totalled the vehicle. To which his replay was, “So it’s cheaper for me to dump it in the river than bring it back empty?”. The rental agent replied “Yes”!

The timing of the train horn and the truck plowing into the crash bar was epic!

I always love how completely impatient other drivers in this area are, that they can't wait and give the stuck driver room to back up and turn.

I love how that clown in the dark grey hatchback at the end could SEE the box truck trying to make a turn into the street, but he STILL darted across the intersection then had the nerve to honk at the box truck, as if the car ever had enough room to get across anyway...

It's like they know that the 11' 8" sign was going to be hit and spring loaded it. Planning for failure.

2:20 - What I love most about all this is that as soon as he withdrew enough to free himself from the embrace of the sign, he took a moment to look at it in silence and think: This sign has always been standing here?

The best part, truck rental companies specifically state that this type of damage is not covered by their insurance (talking about the insurance you get from the rental company when you rent the truck, not regular insurance you may have).
