Latvia benefitted by being the only gentle male ballad in the semifinal. Between the two male ballads in the semi (the other one being Belgium, which was more akin to a power ballad), Latvia objectively had the better performance.

Latvia qualifying was one of the biggest surprises this year because I didn’t think it had a chance and it was fitting that they broke their long streak qualifying in Sweden whenthe last time they were in the final was in Sweden in 2016.

The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has stated they are hesitant to participate next year, unless big changes are inplemented within the EBU and the contest in general. Maybe that's just trying to get some leverage, but I won't be surprised if my country skips next year. Another Dutch broadcaster, RTL, has taken a small survey among Dutch Eurovision fans. And 54% of those fans have answered that Netherlands should skip at least a year, and maybe quit alltogether. And if Netherlands would participate next year, 46% said they would like Joost to return again. But 27% said they first want to wait until the investigations are finished. I don't think Joost would want to return to the Eurovision stage, and that AVROTROS would take such a risk again. So we'll have to wait and see how this will pan out.

It's not just the Dutch - NRK (Norway's broadcaster) is also reconsidering future participation. Czechia also might not be there in 2025. The Latvian government is also considering withdrawal of the country from the Contest. This will cause a huge shockwave among the other countries and the EBU as the withdrawal of two of the biggest contributors (the Netherlands is by far the biggest one after the Big 5) will cause the participation fees to go up for most other countries. And for a country like say Moldova, whose broadcaster (TeleRadio Moldova) is with the smallest budget of all (the artists even have to cover their own costs), a participation fee hike will be unsustainable. And the EBU could forget counting on other non-participating countries like Bulgaria, Romania or Slovakia either to make up the numbers, because these countries are not competing due to either financial problems, lack of interest or both. And they can forget about Turkey (or Türkiye as now they want us to call them) return all of a sudden after over a decade of a absence. And TRT (the Turkish broadcaster) left the Eurovision Song Contest because of the EBU. Italy was also absent for a long stretch of time (1997-2010). If more contries follow the same example as Italy in the late 90's and the entirety of the 2000's or as with Turkey now and just be absent for 5, 10, maybe even 15 years with other countries leving due to the impossible financial burden and driving away other non-competing countries for the same reasons, the EBU will have a serious problem on their hands.

Please do the “What’s wrong with Denmark in Eurovision”! After failing to qualify to the grand final at all four contests after 2019, Denmark became after the 2024 contest the country with the current longest consecutive non-qualification streak, after Ireland (four), Georgia and Latvia (six) broke their consecutive non-qualifications. After hosting the contest in 2014, Denmark has only managed to qualify 3 times in 10 years (2017, 2018, 2019), after only failing to qualify twice (2004 and 2007) since the introduction of the semi finals in 2004 up until 2014.

Loop is not a masterpiece especially lyrically, and nor is it very original, but with Sarah's flawless vocals and a very entertaining and captivating performance, getting last place is a CRIME. The Eurovision is a song contest at the end of the day and Loop was a truly dreadful song. The Busker were robbed last year (that was an awful semi-final and running order for them) but Loop deserved where it finished, irrespective of the stage show. The Maltese national final really needs to do something about the 78% jury. Either make it 100% jury or 50/50 because 78% almost guarantees that the jury winner will beat the televote winner.

I'm not saying the Czechia's song was flawless, but IMO the seeding of countries into the two semis plays a crucial role. I fail to see how this year's seeding helped the proclaimed disruption of long-term voting blocks. Just the second semi: Armenia-Georgia? Denmark-Norway? Austria-Switzerland? Latvia-Estonia? Belgium-Netherlands? Really? 8 of those 10 qualified. And in the first semi the triad Croatia-Serbia-Slovenia? All three qualified. Poland and Czechia each in different semi? None of them qualified.

As a Norwegian, I don't really think I agree with "we'll have pop again next year" and even if that were to happen, it's not due to Norwegians not wanting to take risks. I think people here vote with what they're feeling most at the time, and not caring about the "how is this gonna go in Eurovision?" I do think that Gåte not winning the MGP jury vote/international vote (yes, I know they were still 2nd there) and not even charting in Norway was a bad sign. Norway has struggled with juries, and once again we haven't been able to figure that out, I think maybe we safe too much with stagings rather than the songs. I think the people who voted for Gåte knew that this was either gonna underperform/be borderline or do really well. Unfortunately, not a great result. I don't think Norwegians will shy away from risks, assuming we get daring songs that are actually good/speak to us. Keep in mind, Scandi pop is what we are most known for/charts the most here, so us choosing pop is more because that's what we listen to rather than us being "safe". I just hope we get EBU changes sooner rather than later, because right now MGP is moving towards choosing songs and artists, and if they have most artists saying no to compete due to this years Eurovision, then NRK will withdraw/not compete in order to save MGP, which after all has a larger tradition for Norwegians.

I would love to hear more Norwegian language or folk or non-pop songs, but I guess only people like me would want those songs to win. I hope you're right that it's not set in stone that we'll get pop for the next decade from Norway, but I would not be surprised. Ulveham won the national final (by a hair) because it was the only folk song this year, right? And Gåte is pretty big there I heard, so yeah what are the chances of people voting for something similar knowing it won't do well ? It's sad for music in general and for me of course, so I hope they don't use my logic and will still take risks in the future. Ulveham changed my life somehow, I really fell in love with music again this year because I heard a song that made me feel alive, so yes please I want more of that !

@@ESCTom🙏🏼Tom! After the ‘leaked’ results of Italy’s televoting results, Israel (almost 40%) jumped from 8th to 2nd place of the ESC odds after the semi final. That was just a shocking change. In 2022 Ukraine ‘only’ got around 24.5% in the semi and 29.5% of the Italian televote in final. Those votes were from ESC fans. As long as the EBU isn’t transparent about the true numbers behind the televoting (amount of unique voters and the amount of votes per person), I lost hope for a pleasant and joyful Eurovision. The ratings are public, the televoting points are public, but the rest isn’t (if I’m correct). If the EBU won’t be transparent about this, they allow the Eurovision to be political and they are the facilitator. They didn’t take any measures after seeing the 40%. EBU silenced everyone but one delegation. It seems like the bullying behind the scenes was allowed by the EBU. They let it be possible to vote 20, 40 up till 100 times to vote by different credit cards. This kįlled the soul of the artists, the fans and the whole Eurovision. What did the EBU do until now: announcing they keep the main sponsor. The only ones who took measures on the spot where RAI and the jury members, imo. It sûcks that they had to do this. If nothing else changes it will be the same next year. I feel bad for the artists and the fans. Everyone who votes pays money for it, but nobody actually has any influence by voting once or twice. I personally feel fooled by this system. Everyone spending money on going to Malmö or Swiss is being fooled by the system. It’s a battle between politics and the jury. The political sponsored campaign was of course used for propaganda afterwards. The televoting was widely misused by non fans, non viewers. Sorry for my 🔥, but it still feels so unfair, it’s still so upsetting me. Feels like the heart of Eurovision has been stolen. ‘United by music’ is a hollow slogan in the light of power and money. Joost was right when asked if his song could unite people. He said: “Good question for the EBU.”

Because if they did Lithuania 🇱🇹 would become the new #6 and people might find out 🤪. Besides that, the lobbying would’ve been a waste of money. Eurovision broadcasts start at 5:00 AM in Australia. In the semi finals the voting closes before 7:00 AM. SBS is a public broadcaster with viewing numbers available. The EBU will be able to check televoting against viewership and compare that to previous years to identify Ballot Stuffing (i.e. more people voting than people watching).

Firstly, I was extremely happy for Latvia. Nobody expected that, but the song was always something special to me personally, and his emotions were so honest (all the moms from Europe liked this 😂). This year was an underdog Story for many countries that didn't do well in recent years: Croatia coming 2nd, Ireland, Georgia and Latvia qualifying all together for the first time since 2007, Germany coming 12th, Slovenia qualifying for the 2nd time in a row with a song in Slovenian. Above that, Latvia was accounted as a first country to qualify; you could see how Dons was happy, and their commentator also, screaming of happiness literally. We kind of always knew that Nutsa going to qualify; we saw it on the pre-party how great she could deliver it. Speaking of that, Mustii unfortunately gave the signal that vocals were not together, and that happened on the live show. This song was a jury winner potential at some point, but you have to be a great singer like Slimane to do that, I guess. Interesting how Switzerland came "only" 4th, not receiving any 12 points from the audience. They can be really happy that juries have loved the song more than usual in recent years. I guess there weren't enough delicious songs to split a little bit of that huge number. In 2019, for example, many songs were worthy of winning the jury. I'm only a bit sad because Aiko didn't make it through. She improved 100% vocally, visually and staging-wise from the national selection. They used all the stage elements; it looked so professional and high-level for me. Studio track was always good for me, and this is my favorite non-qualifier this year. Albania needs to learn a lesson for translating their songs; it didn't work for them again. Denmark needs to wake up, like Azerbaijan. They slayed in the late 00s and the begging of the 10s, great songs and now a record of non-qualifying. I wouldn't ever expect that from Denmark, tbh... Speaking of Malta, look. They came in 2nd with the televote in the Semi-final 1 in 2021. The song, staging, and promotion were great. Back in 2005, they came 2nd in the televote-only Grand final, performing 3rd. So, for the small countries, you have to be great and come up with something executed well. Sarah did everything right, but the song, let's be honest, wasn't that spectacular and unique. All in all, for the first time, I was happy with all the qualifiers. Both Semis were pretty strong. I look forward to the next year. Again, great job, Tom.

Similar to poor Malta, I loved this song, also from when it was selected. I sometimes wonder if having so many ranking videos as new songs are selected does more harm than good, but that's probably me being naive, even though this was my 52nd year as a viewer!

About San Marino it sounded pretty bad to me as well. Kenzy sounded stifled and the backing vocals were very loud. Then there was the technical issue with her in-ears that threw a portion of the performance off and I kind of felt like she panicked and ended up blowing herself up, leading to the struggles at the end of the song. Sad, but I don't think it would have qualified anyway given how much of a struggle it is for San Marino to qualify to begin with and the... voting patterns this year.

My guess is that Belgium and Denmark might have qualified with juries instead Norway and Georgia (idk why, but Georgia placed so badly in the final with the juries, norway is expected. And yes, the jury of san marino put belgium last but I still want to believe that Mustii had great jury appeal). Also Switzerland would've been first in the semi with jury votes.

I have a fear Latvia will not compete next year because a petition was created for Latvia to withdraw from the contest, citing high costs and that participants tend to behave "promiscuously". It suggests that the money should be allocated to underfunded national sports teams. The petition received more votes than the 10,000 for it to be reviewed by the parliament.

It hurts me that Sarah still came last after all the work she put in to make her song the most polished performance it could possibly be. It's definitely not innovative or anything, but damn if it isn't catchy and the one I listen to the most out of the girlybops. Also side note, Dons was so emotional at the end of his semi performance that I think it could have gotten him a couple extra points. I know I certainly was swayed!

3:40 To be fair, the second semi final barely had any male acts, especially the first half that had 7/8 female singers. 5:00 Well, last year they were in the first semi final where they infamously never qualified from. All of their qualifications happened in the second semi final, so it might be their "lucky semi". 7:20 Yeah, that really was a bummer. If Georgia didn't qualify with her, I don't know what would've tbh... I really wanted to see her participate so I'm upset with the final result, but that's a discussion for another time. 9:15 This might be selfish, but I wouldn't like that to happen as they would overtake her, and she's sadly their worst result in the final. Like I mentioned, this is a result I'm very disappointed about so I'm biased. If only she competed in another year... 15:45 The EBU probably shot themselves in the foot with the decision to exclude juries from the semi finals... 18:00 5 is actually one of the three death slots of the second semi final. The others are 3 & 10, and the latter didn't qualify either. 19:20 In the last 2 years, number 2 has qualified more times (twice) than number 12 which is currently on four consecutive non-qualifications, the only number to not have qualified either in this year or 2023. The new death slot? 20:10 Well, they would've taken a lot of points from Croatia, that's for sure. 21:35 This doesn't include 2008 itself, right? Since Russia only came 3rd in their semi final. Sweden was the 8th qualifier announced last year, just like Switzerland. I unfortunately don't remember who was announced 8th in the second semi final last year (was it Australia?), but if that's an indicator (televote and jury winner this year), we should keep an eye out for the 8th qualifier next year. From 2016 - 2018, the winner was actually announced 5th in their semi final. 22:55 Well, Germany had a similar pattern over the last three years (doubling, then tripling our points - 3, 6, 18), but that didn't continue as we didn't get 72 points this year (which is 18×4) The flaw here is, that Armenia improved six places each year as well, and you can't finish 2nd with 244 points in the current system. Another fun fact: 19 is the Trenuletul slot and seems to bring luck to the performers since then. The streak of that slot is 7th, 6th and 8th. 24:25 And that was actually their first non-qualifaction in the second semi final. Their perfect streak broke last year. 26:30 Yeah, I'm also concerned that Norway will play it safe now, and not send a song in Norwegian again for now. 27:40 I actually have and I'm from a Big 5 country. Not many in my age group (Gen Z) seem to know what the ESC is. 28:05 This is the upset of the year, surely. It could've potentially been a threat to Switzerland in the jury vote if this came together a bit better. 31:00 Well, this staging was apparently done by the same person who did Switzerland this year and Cha Cha Cha and Heroes in the past... 31:10 I've heard she's not that popular among Kosovans (?), so that could be why. 33:50 Well, putting a dance break into the recap isn't really helpful.
