I thought the Supreme sounded a little bit better but for the most part Simon sounds like himself on both.

Selmer Supreme is clearly the best saxophone ever made... at least for me.

That's the wonderful thing - we're all a bit different. The Supreme is an incredible saxophone and I'm so glad Selmer have made it as it's an important step in the development of our lovely instrument; but it didn't quite turn my head away from my Yamaha EXs!

Awesome video. Noticed aesthetic differences between the sax 1:30. Prefer the 1923 Selmer to the Supreme Tenor. Guess older sax are made to have a lush, elegant, sweet and core sound while modern sax are made to project better with better ergonomics.

I think you're right. I really enjoyed playing the 1923 saxophone because of the history of this marvellous manufacturer and the thought of all the music that's come out of it in 100 years. The Supreme is an excellent horn and really projects. Ideally I'd like to spend more time experimenting with one, but they're in high demand and short supply...

Instruments are usually designed for the music of their times. The 1923 Selmer is the saxophone made primarily for swing and big-band music. Supreme is different, more like a chameleon, that is made to be a good compromise for a variety of recent genres, and classical. In the classical genre (where the alto saxophone enjoys a prominent role), the tenor saxophone is now enjoying increased popularity. Maybe that is why Selmer issued Supreme alto (to satisfy large classical market), then Supreme tenor.

I agree, but with a modern set-up, the 100 year old saxophone still roars!

The big market for brass and wind instruments in the 1800s to mid 1900s was primarily professional and amateur military bands.

What set up are you using?

Jody Jazz Jet 8, BG DUO Black (LDTB), Vandoren ZZ 2.5 for both instruments.

The 1923 *only* costs 2,000?! Where can I buy one for that much?

We'v currently got x2 for sale in our pre-owned stock around that price. They're both on reserve for a customer test in the next couple of days but at least one will appear back on the site over the weekend here: www.dawkes.co.uk/saxophones/used

The old horn just oozes romance and it´s sound tells a story. The new horn sounds cheap and lacking in depth.

I'm not sure I agree with your second comment, but the first is spot on. The more I played the Supreme, the more I liked it, but it's not yet part of saxophone history; the 1923 model definitely is!
