Your stack is so much more interesting than mine. I won't sell mine unless its an emergency such as a health emergency. My stack is boring. All the same thing mostly. There will be no love lost when it is time for them to go. Except for the sadness derived from what ever the emergency was that forced the sale. My stack stays in the dark. I never look at it nor do I have any emotional attachment to it. When they have to go they will just go. Gold is just a savings vehicle to me. Your stack is more of an art gallery than mine.

This is the way to stack imo - it’s just a store of value that you dip into if necessary. Emotional attachments to investments should be avoided - save that for collecting

Of course with a 40-50k sale to an LCS you'll have Form 8300 reporting requirements. May or may not make a difference depending on the circumstances I would imagine. Still something to consider when deciding where to sell and why you are selling. Great display of metal 2 is 1! Happy New Year.

Thanks Vert! In the one case where I sold well over that 10k number it was in support of a large real estate purchase. The “large” part just means a bank was involved, and the form proved to the underwriters where the cash came from. I’ve learned over the years that banks don’t like mysterious cash deposits. Suspicious lot. 😄 Happy New Year!

I'll never sell my first 1 oz gold eagle!! At the time, I didn't really have the income to buy it on a whim, but it was a goal I was determined to achieve. That's one of the great things about precious metals stacking. You can look at your coins and think "this is money I saved from years ago". That may be where some of the sentimentality comes from.

If I could only stack 2 coins it would be the Buffalo and the Maple Leaf. The 24k shimmer draws your attention plus the safety features on the Maple are the best out of any coin. Question, have you ever purchased gold rounds like the John Wick gold coin in APMEX or the one that Scottsdale Mint makes? Have you ever considered stacking gold bars?

Last coin I’d sell would be my Perth mint tiger… love the reverse proof-like finish. If I were only stacking one coin it would be maples. Great perspective 2is1 thanks ✊

Interested to hear your thoughts on European fractional gold. I've been considering consolidation my fractionals...rooster, other francs, schillings, etc. to more mainstream alternatives. I know I should be able to get spot at a minimum, but wondering if AGEs or Buffalo's would be a better option? Certainly they'd be more liquid. I do like the idea of fractional gold, but not at today's premium of gold eagles. Also, what are your thoughts on selling to big dealers like apmex. They definitely appreciate the numismatic value of some coins. Lastly, what are your thoughts on graded gold coins..eg Burnished from W mint AGEs?

I've had some trouble selling Roosters and other old European gold in down cycles, so I stay away from it now. I like the coins - I just don't want to worry about liquidity. AGEs and Buffalos are always my top choice. As for proofs and West Point specials like the burnished, I don't see the value. I see the asking prices, but I don't want to tie up capital in something that may or may not do well and then only if I'm able to find the right buyer. My local shops wouldn't pay more for the burnished Eagle, even though it's a gorgeous coin. Cheers!

Your logic is very sound I've enjoyed your U tube shows a nd must say you've gotten me buying again .I totally agree with you on the. High relief eagle, I knew I should have brought it from the mint, same thing on the Mustang. Thank You for your clarity it helps.

In which state do you live that allows you to sell your maples and Britannia's easily? Could you do a similar video on selling fractionals?

There is an advantage to some numismatics or low premium historic stuff. Kind of a hidden advantage. You will be more reluctant to sell them so less likely to sell them for any non essential thing. You will therefore keep them and maybe the price will rise eventually. It's too tempting to sell the very liquid stuff that can be easily sold and perhaps bought back layer - but then you don't buy it back and it's gone forever perhaps. So a mix is good IMO. Some liquid, some collectable.

The last gold coin I'd sell is my first US Double Eagle. I bought it many years ago from a friend who has since passed away. It's something I can never replace due to the connection to him. The rest would go on the chopping block. Thanks!

Only a few.

Most cogent explanation of a selling strategy. I'd always first sell bullion gold, including my favourite Britannia. Parting with numismatic gold coins is such sweet sorrow. I collect such coins by date, special years that are significant to me personally, so selling them is hard. But only till I see the cash 💸 😅

Yeah, very sad, Shank...unless you can see a big profit on them. Most of what I have doesn't fall into the 'big profit' category, so it would go without much ceremony. A single tear, maybe. 😄

Good stuff 👍 I'm largely in agreement. I'd attempt to sell the less liquid items first. Personally, though, I'm not very sentimental, and I find beauty in practicality (function over form), so I don't give much regard to numismatically valued items.

Years back i sold a tube of 1 oz. eagles a couple at a time to upgrade a home I had purchased. Every sell I did it hurt a little bit inside. I chose to sell the gold at the time as opposed to using some savings. Looking back on that now I would most likely would have used a bit of the savings Oh Well.... Great Vid. as always!

This was a good, thought provoking mental exercise. I think I’d start with smaller fractions and coins from afar, and slowly work toward finishing with Eagles, then finally Buffaloes. Great video!

Good video. This is something i don't think i have seen on ANY other channel (if i have then not many), they usually just pump things and very seldom if ever talk about selling things. Neither the consequences or the reality of what/why you would sell something if you have to or even if it's an appropriate time to move/shuffle assets. BTW i am all about the Eagles, both Gold and Silver. Most others don't really matter to me and/or i am not interested except for the occasional Maple Leaf.

Eagles are the closest thing to money in the gold market here. They represent the majority of my stack and have always operated at a level above anything else. My variety is fun and in certain cases might add a layer of profit, but they will always be more difficult to move in and out of. Buffalos may be similar to Eagles, but I have yet to prove that. I think you're smart where you are. Cheers!

Great video, I know this was a hypothetical scenario regarding just the gold, but wondering at what point the small silver holdings you are starting to build on would go in that line up? As for me and this being my first year of stacking gold, a major emergency would probably mean selling off everything I had. But my last to go would be my one $5 Indian half eagle, that was a bucket list coin from childhood and it will stay with me when I’m living in a cardboard box 😉

Such a great video, thank you. I don’t have the ultra high reliefs to get attached to, but I’ve got several 2021 gold coins for the year my daughter was born, those or my Saint Gaudens double eagle coins would be last to go for me. Purely emotional reasoning, but hey. Love your channel.

Do you keep receipt of all purchases to prove gains/losses? How does this get handled if you paid cash for a coin private party when it comes to record of a gain/loss? Thanks, you have the best channel on KZread hands down.

In a cash purchase, you probably won’t have a receipt. Same goes for a cash sale. Since there would be no reported event, it would be a question of what you decide to declare at the end of the year. If the sale _is_ reported, a receipt would only be required in an audit. In the case where you have a 1099-b form submitted, though, it’s more likely you’ll have to prove your cost basis. I’ve had accountants try to tell me that if you can’t prove a cost basis, the basis is zero, but I don’t know what the actual situation would be. Lately I’m buying a lot more online - that helps with the accounting. Cheers!

@@2is1gold Great answer. Private party has been increasingly intriguing but just doesn't seem to be worth it to me personally even at a cheaper premium if I can't prove my basis. I'm only buying if I can get a receipt as having say 110k in gold sales regardless if it's reported or not wouldn't look good hitting your bank account if you can't prove what you paid for it originally. I understand that some like the off the books aspect of gold but I guess what do you do with it when it at one point gets converted to cash but for me that seems like a horrible idea. Due to my work, I've had to focus on liquidity first. Wether it be land, home or extra, it has to be viewed as something to assist my source of income in a bad situation. With that said, I have stayed with the bulk being consistent US bullion followed by pre33 (for fun nothing slabbed). I've got some maples & a couple Perths but the bulk is US. I recently treated myself to my first buffalo & wow. Could you go into your feelings on 22 vs 24kt US bullion please? Thanks for being another source that looks at things similarly to the way I do.

@@2is1gold Speaking of topics... how about a video for us older folks who need a good plan for coaching our family members about what should be done with the stack when we are gone? I've tried to bring this up to my wife but she just gets upset and then doesn't want to talk about it. I suppose a detailed letter could work and probably should be included in the financial papers section of my estate plan. My son is a very level headed fellow and is also my estate executor, so he would get a copy of this as well. This issue will become more important as more stackers get older, so having some ideas of what should be done with this valuable asset would be good.

I have prepared a detailed reference For the coins as well.It includes a picture of each one with the year and price paid.With current Comps . I plan on taking it all to a shop or two I trust for an appraisal at current Gold spot price for just melt value then current after that the premium difference will be the problem to be negotiated.But I am hoping a fair value can be suggested in writing.The longer I hold the coins the less the total price matters for the older purchases,gold was 1300 at the time for example.Most of my high value coins are GNC Slabbed and it helps to make them a known Value for max return.It is what it is so to speak.I hope this helps.Good Luck.

@@edb3877 . I’m not sure what state you are in so here goes. If you put your metals in the will and declare it then it will be taxed. If you have something you want to leave loved ones then maybe doing it ahead of time with instructions not to sell while you are breathing is in order. Putting them in a banks lock box will get it inventoried and as stated taxed. I hope I have helped.

This is why I always make sure to have a few 5gram/10gram gold bars from Valcambi or Argor Heraus, Perth, etc. It is cheaper to buy with the lowest premium and if I am getting spot anyway, then not all my stack needs to be coins. Those are the ones to go with minimal loss. Monument Metals always have great deals of $24.99 over melt, and I always TRY (if budget lets me) to add one to whatever I am buying. Coins are good to stack because if you do private sales people recognize them and a bar makes private buyers hesitate at the shopping mall parking lot, but that is not the case if I am at a coin dealer because they can test and they are experts on capturing fake ones. So, if I sell to my coin dealer then that is what bars are for. I had to do it once and even got more than what I paid for them, sold $5K in Perth Mint bars and spot price was high enough to even make a $310 profit in only six months. And, I keep my coins to play and look at...

I like the perth mint stuff low mintage is my main concern. I prefer rare high premium Silver and gold. It will fetch even higher premiums on eBay never sell to a coin shop unless u want spot

this was a interesting vid. though i'd sell in the same order. that double eagle would be the hardest to part with or maybe the tiger. i like that frosted look.

I agree with your train of thought with your stack. As far as throwing in some fractional eagles with the pert mint coins to “sweeten the pot” I feel that strategy may or may not pan out. I’ve tried something similar before and it didn’t work for me. Plainly someone will buy what they want and that’s it. I’ve passed many times on a pile of :)&: with a diamond on top😄

I’m sure you’re right with private buyers, but I used fractional Eagles in the past to get my 20 francs Roosters sold to the local coin shops. That was a more extreme case. The shops had declined to buy the Roosters altogether. This would just be a bit of a mood boost to help the price. If they still passed, I’d take it all to the next shop. Cheers!

I have one of those 2009 double eagles in high relief, I'd have agree with your choices. That one would be my last to sell.

My half Eagles are Indian Heads. They're some of my faves.

Since I only have Buffalos and Eagles, and a few Maples. The Maples would sell first for sure. After watching your video I appreciate that you have more option to consider when selling your stack. Nice work.

It's a matter of timing. If I have a window for profit, I'd sell the fancy stuff. If it wasn't going to net me more than a Buffalo, no question, I'd sell the cheapest one to replace. Cheers!

I feel much better when they are separated again 😂 and we have the same "last coin" - the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle. Beautiful classic design. Plus, I don't think I will be able to afford the original thing 🤣 5 digit gold is out of the question for me.

Great video. Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to buy one-ounce coins, so my gold stack predominately comprises 1/10- and 1/4-ounce pieces. Given I’m a massive Perth Mint fan, and compounded by the fact I find AGEs v. dull, my stack is full of coins with different designs. As I’m currently trying to buy a house, of late, I’ve thought a little about how I’d sell through my gold for unexpected house-related stuff. I was surprised but, as you say, that attachment thing is a real issue! I’ve come to learn that I’d actually struggle to get rid of the majority of my coins. Consequently, I’ve concluded that I need some dull gold in the stack that I actually don’t like…. The last coins I’d get out from under are my gold Kookaburras!

Hi, 2. I would have to hold on to two of my coins. I would keep my 2008 Buffalo, even tho it is not the W mintmarked coin, and my 2018 1/2 oz Reverse Proof Libertad. If I had a better date pre-33, I would keep that also. My pre-33s are common date coins that could easily be replaced. I tried but was unsuccessful in getting the V75 Gold Eagle. If I had acquired that coin, it would have been the coin I would keep. *TYU*

That V75 Eagle would have been hard for me to keep. The price in a flip would have been too attractive!

I had to sell a Buffalo in 2021 to pay for my mother’s services . Of course it was an easy choice when it came to that situation. But I felt like I was playing catch up all year trying to replace it. The gold was going to be my long term hold and silver as my savings but it seems like it’s going to have to be the other way around or I’ll loose lots of value selling my silver to early . I wish I knew what I know now about silver before I stacked as hard as I did . . I would hate to have to sell all my gold stack .

That was a fun and thought provoking video. The last gold coin I'd ever sell is my 1/4 oz year of the rat from Monnaie De Paris (AKA The French mint) That's my year and only 888 were minted. Thanks to your experience and logic I will continue to primarily stack eagles and Buffalo's. Happy New Year BTW!

Local shops, APMEX, JM Bullion, Bullion Exchanges and other online dealers.

Your thoughts on the Maples and the Brits are my same thoughts on all gold, and silver for that matter. I purchase sovereign minted coins and what ever has the lowest premium when I am ready to purchase. I stay away from the high premium coins, gold or silver. To me, it s about the 1 oz of gold or silver. I do have some generic rounds, 1 oz, and bars, 1& 10 oz, for the sole purpose of selling if the price of silver takes off because I have a low cost average for those items, sub $20 cost average.

In silver, I really only buy two things: ASEs and 10 oz bars. The premiums on ASEs have kept me out for a few years now, though.

@@2is1gold I agree, the premiums are way to high, that is for sure. Last ASEs I purchased were in 2-2020, and paid $20.60 each. First ASEs i ever purchased were in 2001, and they were $7.58 each. I am focusing more on 10 oz silver bars, at least 1 a month. Great videos!

I feel like it needs saying, I'm far more likely to sell all of my cryptos, stocks, and possessions in my home that are of any value before I sell off my gold stack(or even my silver stack). Maybe that's me, but I'm of the mind that my PM is going to be my LAST line of defense in the event of a financial emergency. Moreover, I can't think of a single reason why i would possibly need that kinda money in a rushed timeframe. As always, thank you for another wonderful video and showing us more beautiful gold, your commentary is always worth it's weight in it! Would you ever trade in your fractionals for a full oz? I've thought about doing it with my stack. To be honest, it's good to have those fractionals but in your situation with about 60 oz of gold i kinda doubt that is a factor for you, so I ask your opinion on us, the lower stackers.

Interesting you bring up swapping fractional for 1 oz coins. I did it for years. My local coin shop would give me an even swap, so I would trade two or three toward my next purchase and step them up to a 1 oz. Or, I'd just take in 8 or 12 or whatever and trade them up. That was in the days of much lower premium on 1/4 oz Eagles. I was giving up $20 on every coin I swapped up because of the higher premium. A lot of people called that a questionable choice, but I wasn't stacking fractional - I was always working to fill 1 oz tubes. I haven't done it since early 2020. I can't justify the lost premium right now. I still like the idea, though. It lent to my consistency. Cheers!

Great video as always. My question is, if your reason is that you need cash fast, why sell at all? Gold is a leverageable physical asset that you can EASILY get a loan against. Rather than selling them, why not take a loan out against them? You can even take them to a pawn shop. Literal CASH on the spot with the option of coming right back for them and using them as collateral a thousand more times if you needed to in the future. No need to replace them if you're not actually selling them. You can literally bring $100k worth of any of these to a reputable pawn broker, get your capital, do what you have to do, and come back and repay your loan, or even pay your loan down over time to get your gold back.

I just don’t know much about pawn shop collateral loans, but I can get a line of credit or HELOC too. In the past when I’ve sold, it was to increase the down payment percentage to get better terms. I wouldn’t sell if I could more easily or more equitably open a line. Cheers!

I'd follow my actual strategy. Buffalos and Eagles. Once I got to a certain point, I'd probably start back in on some fun stuff. So, I guess that's a yes. I get a bit more variety than I should to keep things interesting on the channel. Outside of that, I'd do it all the same. Cheers!

I'm all for supporting local coin shops. However, the best place to buy and sell in today's market is within well run private groups. My favorite group has 7k members. Premiums are well balanced, and when it comes time to sell... your premium is recoverable. Going to the LCS and spending $100 over spot on a piece, only to return and sell it back for spot makes no sense in today's era of social networking. (Just wanted to throw that out there.)

Yeah, if you can find a group like that, it's great. If you do want to move $40k or more in metals in a day, though, the local shop is the 800 lb gorilla in the market. Cheers!

@@2is1gold I'll tell ya... in the private groups I'm in. 40k in a day... no problem. I've seen 100k go in hours. I'm finishing up on a 300k group project now. You just have to get in the right group! Really enjoy your vids! Love the presentation!

Generally, I don’t purchase a Coin, unless I’d be willing to buy 10 of Them Therefore, I don’t have any “onesies & twosies” floating around in My Gold Stack - I have Tubes of almost every Gold coin I own, the exception being some rare Libertads,… but even then - I buy usually 4 of each. Uniformity & concentration, of only the most liquid or highly desirable coins, makes up my entire Gold stack & the vast majority of My Platinum Stack. My Silver stack is highly uniform & concentrated, but lacks the liquidity, of say ASEs. ~AGM

That's a great plan, and one I've wandered off of lately. With the exception of series coins, I do try to only buy what I want "a few" of. Ten is a good number, though. Cheers!

I paid $2800 for my 1 oz gold Rwandan rooster from 2017. It had a mintage of only 100 and was in the first in the series. I don't know how much it's worth now.

Gah! I would LOVE to have those Perth Myth's and Legends. Makes me feel a little reluctant at over $3k per coin, though...still, they are soooo pretty. My favorite "stackable" low premium are the Britannias and Maples (in that order). I can't believe they are so low premium compared to AGEs and Buffalos. They are a far better minted coin from a technical stand point, I think. The Liberty coins are super beautiful and I keep looking at them (especially the high relief) but keep throwing up when I see the secondary market prices...if you can even find them.

I still don't understand, why I buy a gold coin with at least $100 premium over spot price then when I sell I will get a spot price at best, loosing about %8 is not good, it's not fair، it should be %3 like any transaction fee.

I was getting so sad for you and had to keep reminding myself this was all hypothetical 😎

My daughters brought this subject up with me this last year, sadly while I had the "C-19". When I joked with them saying that I had not taken the time to have a will written. That it would be like a treasure hunt and who ever found the bags, would be able to keep them. They didn't seem to find it as funny as I did. I would have to keep my slabbed silver libertads, 1 oz Au libertads and my Roosters.

Oh, my God, look at that. Looks like heaven on a table. Having said that, if I was fortunate enough to have that many yellow tempresses on my desk, I guess I'd sell whatever had high sellability value. The fractional gold would probably go first.

Fractional is definitely easy to sell!

In an emergency, I’d use a cc in heartbeat before I sold any of that gold…just me.

Selling duplicate items is easier. Buying duplicates allows one the chance to do that later. With collectable or semi numismatics, selling the lower quality grade one is less of a wrench.
