Self-Watering Moss Globe (Satisfying and Relaxing Build)
In this one, I transform a basic craft foam ball into a living piece of art. It's being constantly watered, which hydrates the geotextile fabric. That creates a great growing surface for the moss to grow on and thus you have the living moss globe. Not only that, but once the water reaches the bottom of the globe, the water returns to the basin via laminar flow.

I bought the foam craft ball awhile ago, but I didn't know what I wanted to do with it. I thought of it while I was working on a few other things last week. I think it turned out great! What do you think?

looks awesome, you should put together a moss care guide going over different types and how they grow best. every time i put together a terrarium i end up killing half the moss by having it either too dry or too wet

Agreed, that would be helpful. Part of the problem, though, is accurate identification of several mosses requires a microscope 😅

I would love an update on this project to see how well it worked out, please. Thank you for all you do to make our world pretty!
I feel like the biggest thing your channel is missing is regular update on each creation. Let's say I want to make something similar to this. I have no idea if it grew well or if everything is dead. What worked and what did not. Would love seeing a playlist for each terrarium, vivarium, paludarium or any -arium for that matter so I can see what pitfalls you hit and learn from your mistakes and successes.
I'd love to see this project again in a couple of months when the moss has grown in properly :-)

Looks great ! I'm trying this and if it looks half as good as this one it will be a succes 😅
I want to visit that little planet.
The laminar flow coming of the bottom is fantastic.
The juxtaposition of the stark lines and symmetrical angles of the opaque and man made structure done in the most minimalist fashion against the simple single toned smooth and round river rocks is brilliant. The globe has life and it flows down to those natural structures. The fact that it is static in nature is evocative. It reminds us that we are all living in the natural world and even though we see permanence, the essential nature of our existence (whether we build the white stark structures to capture nature) or embrace nature in the moment; It is ever changing. And we must understand that from a time perspective. The laminar flow exemplifies this lack of permanence in both mans creation and nature's creation. A truly exceptional piece. Thank you.
You should try sticking your finger in soapy water before removing the excess silicone, it won't stick to your fingers as much and it will look cleaner. Just a tip ☺️

A wonderful video to watch nice and early while I drank my coffee. The build really is mesmerizing watching the steady water streaming down onto the moss. There's something just magical about listening to water. I'll take water on rocks any day haha
The comment may be a bit behind your post, but thank you so much for the soothing, peaceful calm you provide in your videos. My life is so full of anxiety, I watch true crime videos after my boyfriend falls asleep to relax. With that said I've always loved horticulture, at a very young age my dad made me a terrarium and taught me how to care for it (or how not to care for it lol)... my parents unfortunately went their separate ways when I was 5 but my terrarium was to stay at my moms house with me so I could enjoy it until the weekend when I could be surrounded by plants, animals, fish and nature. Until the tragic day I came home from school that my mom stayed home from work. She decided to water all of the plants in our house. Including my terrarium. I was heartbroken. I always had a stronger bond with my dad, that day made it even more solid. I watch your videos to find zen before I sleep myself. Again thank you.
I honestly had to re-watch the vanity shots as I really believed them to be stills with flow sounds overlaid. I can't believe this. You are god level.
You should make a whole room into one big vivarium or something similar and then when you build new ones you have a source of inspiration, serenity, and the good vibes associated with them all around you
I think that it would be cool if you made something involving tadpoles because that is a critter that a lot of people have access to.
I love these no talking videos. I also love the talking videos.
The way the water flows down into the pool below without any splashes or change of the form makes this sculpture look like a still image. I love it.
Very relaxing and therapeutic. But who else missed, "What's going on Serpa squad, Tanner here"?
thank you for not putting music in, the tranquility is addictive
There are not enough words to describe how amazing you are and your videos are. You have the perfect low key tone to your voice while providing such amazing content. Your videos are the best form of happiness and therapeutic content
Wow cool laminar flow you got there it makes it look like it's what is holding the glob up
Also- great dripping sound effects. 👌
Also other planets! That could be the new educational standard for learning planets and growing their own plants and food. Teach them this in school
This was an absolutely brilliant idea and it turned out amazing.
Beautiful little moss world 🌿🙂
I'm so glad we just got to listen to the sounds of you working rather than some obnoxious music lol Sometimes music is nice, but it's usually too loud and repetitive. I really like this. I wish I had more room for stuff like this. Or access to more materials like you use. I'm in Okinawa currently and trying to translate and find stuff here is so hard!

Are you stationed there? Commissary will have the tile and 100% silicone for builds. If you want glass, any of the glass shops ask for 1 cm thick glass for smaller builds, 2 cm thick for big builds. Moss grows all over, especially in the joints of brick buildings and sidewalks there. A small piece of moss, size of your thumb, is fairly easy to propagate.

@@Lazy_Fish_Keeper we are yes. The BX does have silicone but says not recommended for aquariums even tho it’s 100% silicone. The local hardware has silicone but a lot has anti fungal from what I’ve seen. I’ve seen some moss around but not much and it’s so hot most is pretty crusty. I did end up buying some bc of that. I’m just so used to Home Depot and I’m being whiny haha

@@brieoshiro the silicone has to say not safe for aquariums from a liability standpoint. If it's 100% silicone (like GE) it's naturally mold resistant. Just be sure to cure properly

@@brieoshiro people online also think they have more knowledge about the coronavirus than the epidemiologists... According to Master Breeder Dean with Aquarium Co-op, Tanner with Serpa Design, and the local glass supply shop I get my glass for my custom builds, as long as it says 100% silicone, by law it can't have anything else in it. Apparently, 100% silicone is naturally mold and mildew resistant. You can download the ingredients directly from the website and double check. The most important thing is let it dry for at least 48 hours in a well ventilated area, as it offgasses acetic acid while it cures. (ie: it reeks of vinegar until it is cured completely)
I think the regular videos with you talking and explaining so calmly are even more relaxing. In fact, I´m using them when I take some time to rest. It´s my favorite to have in the background when I´m resting. Thank you!

Hey tanner hope all is well ..... You know I gotta say I loved the fact that there wasn't any background music no talking ( please don't be offended we love to hear you explain your process when you're working on a specific project or any project and love the sound of your voice) just the sound of you working and the sound of materials being worked on idk I kinda found it very relaxing 😎 just watching ❤️ absolute great 💡👍 idea for these lil balls... Thank you for the video loved it!!!! P. S. I have grown to love ALL KINDS OF MOSS cause of you and your wonderful beautiful work with this type of plant!!
The perfect laminar flow makes the end B-roll look like photos
Amazing as always!
Looks like a texture you buy for 3D modelling. Nice one!
The Moss King wows us again with another piece of living art. I love these “silent” builds. It’s so relaxing watching you work. Keep doing what you’re doing! 👍
I'd love a video all about floating plants! Especially the ones you use the most. They're so lovely looking I like to just have bins of them around bit not sure how to keep them
I love every aspect of this one. Also you're cutting skills with the glass are so good. Proud of you. That looks so simple and calm and pretty. I hope I can make it one day. Can you update us on its wellbeing later on? Thanks so much for this one.
It’s the glass work for me. The DIY glass cutting and adhering is what always impresses me most.
cant wait to see an update on this one! really cool!
Unique build! So enjoy your boundless creativity.
Really nice cus there ain't no more music just the sound of art
Wow it is so nice
I love the variety in the videos lately.
It's so amazing to see how far you've come with your crafting skills. I remember subscribing to your channel when you used to only make terrariums. Watching you grow is such a beautiful thing to witness.
Wow the details in this build is absolutely crazy !! ❤️💯 I can't even tell or see the lil metal tact's u made to hold the moss I place !!! Great 👍💯 job tanner !!!!
That's is very beautiful and peaceful. I love it
That one is the newly found planet in our solar system named *AQUAMOSS*. By the way, as always it's very creative and beautiful project bro.
I'm still trying to learn how to cut glass better, this was VERY helpful for me.
QUE HERMOSO CONCEPTO! Muchas gracias por compartir, es absolutamente relajante y bello.
Ahh, was stressed, now chilled x
I love your work. I am impressed with how you can make something as beautiful and inspiring as moss even more elegant by adding your creative touches. Keep it up!
I'd buy this off your website in a heart beat
wow this is literally amazing, the different kinds of moss make it look like a planet. and the flow of water below make it look like it's blooming out of the moss below, on a crystal stem (poetic). As for me, I'd rather it drip the water than a constant flow cause I like the sound of it. I always wanted to make a dripping moss, and tried to follow your tutorials but I can't manage to make it clean from parasites...
It's like a little tiny planet
I might try this with a foam head, could look pretty cool!
feedback, thank you so so so much for not calling me "serpa squad" and for not coming across as a "yo what's goin on, smash that like button" content producer. bravo
Watching you build the eco modern like designs has been inspiring and extremely relaxing. Love your work as always mate.
Dude. You are an artist and scapes are your medium.
The hell, the waterflows so smooth and steady without making any rippels I could have sworn I was watching photos at the end, had to go back when you laid out the moss to realize the it was all moving footage. Looked like you worked on a stopped frame. Awesome!
17:42 this has no right being that satisfying

Almost all of his videos have commentary on them. He seems to enjoy branching out and creating different content so people have a broad selection of videos they can enjoy. Your suggestion is confusing, his relaxing builds with commentary on them would just be the normal videos that he regularly posts?
Beautiful.. and inspirational! I'm now adding to my to-do list to make one of these, but I'm going to go with a theme of Green Earth in Space. So, use different types of moss to differentiate water/land, and the structure is going to be night sky-themed, maybe with appropriate lighting/stones.. perhaps a small light option that is the Sun in the distance (say in the central pillar, above and behind the Earth) and maybe lighting in/around the base using blues.. hmm.. could even use a "christmas lights" kind of idea for stars...
I love your videos:)
Thank you for stepping into asmr

Having some wood where the water comes down to make it trickle a bit more would be nice. It's kinda weird looking with it just pouring down like that.
You need a wall mounted glass cutter like they use in frame shops. They aren't that expensive and it POPS it for you after you score.
it's beautiful

Very nice. Would make a great desktop fountain. love it. thanks for the video.
This is BEAUTIFUL
These vidoes are so satisfying and relaxing
It’d have been amazing if you could shape the moss as a world map. Maybe if you let it grow out and trim it down in the future in such a way that the part that’s grown could shape the continents and the remaining lower regions as the oceans🌎🌍🌏
I loved this. Very relaxing. I can't wait to see a follow up!
Ok, I really liked this one. A tiny planet being held up by a stream of water.
This is pretty cool Tanner, it has a strong scifi vibe. Like I could totally see this in an environment (evil guy's fancy office?) in 5th Element or other scifi movies.

That is so neat, I'm going to have to try that, hope you don't mind. thank you for the inspiration. Can't wait to see that in a few months.👍
you should try a similar concept, but with a clear acyclic tube holding the object up. so when the water runs down it looks like it suspended by the water
Beautiful design for in a corner ✌️😎
This is a very relaxing video! At first I was asleep
Awesome, truly a very talented young man
I definately need to see this once its had a couple months to grow in
