Self launching a beach boat & fishing using drift nets. Sea alive with sprats, bass herring whiting.

Well looking at the weather forecast, it was either launch today or not being able to for a few days with the gale coming. As I have a few people wanting bait for beach fishing and piking, I had to go. Launching on my own, by putting an anchor in the beach, can be a pain unless the wind is coming off the land, as the wind can blow the boat around, putting it ashore. Even though there was a good southerly breeze, the tides are slack, so launching went without any problems. Looking at the sounder, there looked like tonnes of herring in the water, but after I hauled, it wasnt quite true. It looks like the water is full of sprats, and not herring, and the herring have moved off in the deeper water. The whiting were all coughing up sprats, what is a good indication of what the fish were. Herring and sprats look the same on the sounder.

Sorry you didn't catch much mate, got back from a belated Golden Wedding cruise on Tuesday, we left on the 23 rd Nov, next day was that big storm in the North sea, SF 10 or 11 plus hurricane force winds. We watched the ships slow progress on the tele and we hit a trough, the ship listed to port badly and the bridge called for all, inc staff and crew to sit or lay on the floor. It sounded like the engine cut out but I think the stabiliser wings must have retracted. Looking at the screen the ship did a 360 degree turn, stabilisers came out again and bridge apologised for the 'incident' after 10 minutes. When we got to Tromso I saw a lorry load of divers checking underneath. I spoke to a local fisherman and told him about your problems, he had a slightly smaller boat than yours, mostly fishing in the fijords but sometimes outside. He said no shortage of all fish, he blamed the EU and our government, he said they wouldn't put up with what goes on here, mind you, fish and chips getting on for £25 a small portion, beer nearly £20. wages are better than here though. Anyway, better luck next time, take care, Norfolk Ray

That sounds like a interesting experience! Ive been to Tromso twice on fishing holidays, it is unreal, you get bored of catching 12lb cod and 4lb haddock. The prices out there are expensive to us, but the wages are 3 times here, so its all relative. If the fishing was like that here, I would order a cheetah cat, pack in work and fish full time. You could make a good living catching cod, haddock and coalie on jigging machines.

You talk about them killing the industry, I was told they now want to ban any type of towed bottom gear north of Happisbugh , including shimp trawls. I have no idea what they're thinking! So i'll be getting some in while I can! Nice to see you got off again, if somewhat a dissapointing haul.

Yes, its gone mad. Loads of areas have stopped shrimp trawling for a bit of sea grass or whatever. There is far less boats than ever, and its still there, so the shrimpers havent done much damage. Like they want to limit shrimping in the wash, as it supposedly damages the sea bed, but its ok when they want to pile in turbines, or the daft idea that pops up every few years about turning the wash into a giant harbour. Its all about money

@beanysfishing2555 yup all about the dollar... up here at Bacton, where I usually go, they pumped in millions of cubic feet of sand..turned the bottom into a never settling dessert of flat sand.. no low and bank like there used to be.. now there's no small flat fish or crabs or shrimp really! 🤣

Would a cheetah cat be harder to launch on your own, bigger fule bill on a cat with 2 engines

Yes, self launching with a cheetah would probably be hard work, you would need someone to launch you. Ive got a 2 stroke, so a cheetah with 2 selvas probably wouldnt be much difference in fuel. I dont think the investment in a cheetah would be worth it where I am.

I know they stopped the white bait and discouraged it being served in restaurants because it's not a species just lots of juvenile fish , are they thinking the same for sprats but looks like sprats are a species in the books so has it been over fished. Some Pollack fishing has been stopped in Cornwall as deemed to be in indangerd when it took over from cod now its over fished and there's talk of mackaral being over fished that's why people have struggled to get any in the last three years most trawler from the Celtic sea and Icelandic plus super trawler up and down killing it the bastard's in the EU won't stop until it's all gone

Theres so much going on with the sea, its hard to understand. The have banned sprats with 27mm drift nets by default. Its only because an EU discard ban rule from 2020 makes it illegal to use drift nets under 50mm for pelagics, but you can use 16mm trawls and seines, which catch all the tiny sprats?? So much for conservation. I have 200 tonne quota a month on sprats! The cod on my bit of coast were finished due to sea temp, theres very few cold water plankton to feed the cod fry for the first 2 weeks of life, so the breeding cycle has stopped. Mackerel have also moved north. They are finding huge shoals further north than macks are generally found. Seems like its all warming up, moving fish north. Bass having been moving north for years. We never used to have many bass here, now they are here all year round, ok smaller fish and numbers in winter
