@@a.b.8080 There was a cheaper ways on the setup that can get you started into saltwater. Do a lot of research on the Saltwater tanks and even before you start, plan out what you want(best to choose begginer fish) and also don't overstock a tank because it makes you need to do more work. Saltwater is not as hard as people think, as long as you do regular maintenance for your tank.

I remember my first salt water tank. It was in the early 2000's way before youtube. I basically just winged it with basic instructions from message boards and minimum wage employees at my local aquarium shop. Videos like this would of been a huge help and saved a lot of headaches and catastrophes. I could now write a book on the do's and don'ts with all the mess ups I went through.

My second fish was a gold dot maroon haha, and he ended up being a mega jerk trying to monopolize every anemone in the entire tank. Good advice! However, as a semi newbie, i think you missed out on a critical new, small tank, owner. A great idea is to wait getting the fish a week or two later, and get a number of decent invertebrates, like shrimps and hermit crabs so they are going to clean up the classic newbie mistake of overfeeding, which can screw up the balance and protien levels of the tank ( even with an adequate dry or wet skimmer!). A healthy number of waste eaters like these will keep the tank clean, water clean and the filters etc working at optimum! A few attractive small shrimp and attractive active hermit crabs also bring interest to the base of your tank. And action when the fish are busy doing their thing in out of sight areas ( my reef rocks have a couple of inches over the entire width and height of the tank, so they can hide and chillout). And having the invertebrate base gets new tank owners into good habits with correct feeding and maintenence before subjecting the fish to potentially toxic environments!

Great video. I am about to start on my saltwater tank. I already bought the tank but i kept upgrading my planted tanks to all AIO so I put the saltwater on hold. I could have used the money for my saltwater since I bought a lot of bigger tanks that a lot of people in the hobby would say start with that one for saltwater. However I have a 25 lagoon that I am going to use for the saltwater. I feel that starting small 20-40 is the best way to learn in any type of aquarium, May it be salt, fresh or even brackish. If you are really into the hobby and want to keep them as pets, not fish you need to learn the basic and the care and work that needs to go into smaller tanks. Even though bigger tanks or forgiving that means to me that a lot of people will used that as an excuse to not keep up with their husbandry.

Let me say that we were one of these newbies who didn't quarantine our fish. Everything was going along swimmingly and then disaster. We had gotten a couple of Royal Grammas that we put into our display tank. One died, then the other. We just figured it was a fluke. Then one of our clowns suddenly had white spots. Before we could even get a diagnosis determined the clown had died and the other clown was showing signs of spots. We did not have any medicine on hand to treat what we eventually figured out was Brooklynella a.k.a. clownfish disease. We also didn't have a quarantine tank to move the sick fish to. We rapidly got the appropriate medicine shipped to us, as well as a separate quarantine tank, but the damage was already done. We lost all three clown fish, and two Pajama Cardinals. More than half of our livestock was dead. With the remaining three fish and our invertebrates we were able to get them into separate tanks one being the new quarantine tank. Our display tank had to be completely cleaned out and left fallow for over six weeks. We are still recovering from this disaster weeks later. Many tears were she'd by my 13 year old as fish after fish died. Lesson learned. Going forth we will always quarantine before adding a new fish to our display tank. We lost our beloved clowns, and it was a costly loss both emotionally, and financially. Don't make our mistake, take the time and do things right.

depends. i assume the tank is brand new so if it is then not a good idea to get more then 2 unless it's a huge tank if the tank is brand new and you want to get more then 2 then be ready to do a water change every 3 days at the bare minimum for atleast 2-4 weeks even if you think your tank is cycled. something i do for brand new tank is if it's 20 gallons it gets 2 fish at the start if it's 40 gallon it gets 4 fish when it comes to display tanks. the frequency of the water change will depend on the water testing that you'll be doing but again if brand new tank then do water change every other day or 3 days bare minimum. this also depends on the size of the fish you'll be getting if it's small fish you can get away 3 day water change for 2-4 weeks but if it's big fish then daily water change and water testing until you have zero anomia and non toxic level nitrate if it is an already established tank which you don't have i'm guessing then you should be good with multiple fish at once just make sure the size is similar of the fish and put in some more live bacteria but again keep testing going other wise you might start a minicycle. so as long as you do atleast 2 water changes every week you should be good with multiple fish just know after EVERY water change replace the lost bacteria based on the amount of water removed even tho bacteria doesn't live in water better safe then sorry with a dead fish or 2

Another big no no I feel for small tanks are other damselfish besides clownfish. I had an azure damsel and although it looks really bright, they are super agressive and don't tolerate anyone else. I thought that by adding a clownfish triple his size, the damsel would be fine, but it kept harassing the clown and forcing it into a corner. And then to catch a damsel after you realize the mistake... I had to tear the entire tank down and drill open a piece of live rock where it jammed itself into. Don't get damsels in a small tank, unless you are fine with just keeping that single fish!

They are considered semi-aggressive. Orchid dottybacks are actually quite peaceful for a dottyback, because some dottybacks, like Royal and Magnificent Dottybacks, are even considered AGGRESSIVE. Now that's what I call a little ball of fury!

Either one of them could work, I wouldn't do both the firefish and royal gramma. Personally, I'd pick the firefish, they are much more chill and more out in the open. I find royals tend to claim a part of the rockwork and hide a lot

I have a 125 gallon that I want to start as a saltwater tank. I am trying to figure out all what I need to start i have the tank, 2 penguin marineland 350 gallons per hour filters, and a home made hood. I dont want to spend over 2 grand for my start up but if I do I do it's worth it. If you or anyone could help with what I need to start a 125 gallon salt water tank it would be appreciated.

Well you need 1. Salt 2. Filter + Heater 3. Stone (Would recommend live but it's more expensive) 4. Sand (The same as the stone better live but more expensive. 5. Lighting (If you only want fish you can just use a simple ordinary led but otherwise for coral i would recommend for a 4 foot tank 2 AI Hydra 32 6. Get the tank to cycle 7 If you think about getting alot of waves of fish get a 30 gal quarantine and put all new fish for 30 days with copper treatment in there. 8 Getting corals (If you really want some corals go and get some leather corals and some zoanthids they are really hardy, does'nt cost that much and they look stunning. If you want some more help you can contact me via facebook (Melwin Magnusson) or Instagram (melwinmagnusson05) Im only 15 but i have been in this hobby for 6 years now so you can trust me. Wish you all the best with your new saltwater tank!!

Don’t get clownfish. They can be territorial and mean. Mine like to bite me and have killed some of my new fish that have been added after them. I would suggest a Pygmy angel. Start with at least a 30 gallon. The bigger the tank the more forgiving it is to water quality mistakes that you might make in the beginning. Also, if there isn’t a what you see is what you get section you can always just email the place and ask for a picture of what you are interested in. If they are a good place they shouldn’t have a problem doing that.

I don't know if you'll ever see this since it's been 9 months since you posted this vid, but if so I have a ? I hope you can help with: I have a "snowflake" ocelaris. (I call it a 'her' so this is the pronoun I'm going to use now) I got her and a sibling when they were itty babies from a local breeder. Her brother died 2 years ago in a rock slide during a move. :( I have had her total for... maybe 6 years. After her brother I wanted her to have a clown buddy, so I got her a black ocelaris, but she picked on him relentlessly, until he had no dorsal fin left at all and other fins were a mess. I bought him MUCH smaller than her so there would be no testing of hierarchy, but that clearly didn't help. Unfortunately I put him in a plastic basket container within the main tank to sep them and he eventually managed to jump out through a 2" gap and died on the floor :( So, finally my ? - This was asked to me and after some thought, it doesn't seem THAT far fetched so... IN your opinion, is it possible that she just didn't like the new clown because he looked different than her/her previous roommate, in that they are orange and this guy was black? Or is she just a bully and it would be best to never get her another clown friend? Notes: She did bully her brother too, but never to the point of damaging fins. She has been alone with only CUCs and somewhere in there is a starfish, for about a year now. She lives in a 29 biocube. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

Definitely DO NOT buy from Live Aquaria’s divers den. I have tried buying fish from this section twice, and they both came in DOA. Unfortunately I thought this would be a good choice since it was supported by this channel, but I guess that was a bad choice on my end. I have done purchases on the internet in the past with success, so I believe this is an issue on Live Aquaria’s end, so I will no longer be purchasing from them. If you want the best success, find a good LFS and get to know them well.
