No they are not obligated to protect users as the service they give is free. If a 3rd party entity breach someones data the one securing it didnt break your trust because they did not intentionally want it to happen to. Unless you went on with a contract with a claus if breach happens then the one securing it is responsible. When robbers rob a bank it doesnt mean the bank owner did it. Data breach by whom side is what you need to realize. If a person enters his or her info in the internet its already over. This digital problem made politicians a bit paranoid because they get affected but have no power over it. The misuse of data however is hard to prove but with CA standpoint in industry many people know what they really do. A politician talking about trust issue isnt actually good.

Before his sudden elevation to ministerial level in the Singapore government, Mr Shanmugam was a lawyer who defended several members of the infamous High Society Cocaine Circle. One of them Dinesh Singh Bhatia, a private equity investor and son of former High Court judge Amarjeet Singh. A first offender, he was facing a jail sentence of up to 18 months for drug use. His supplies were provided by notorious drug baron, Tunisian Guiga Lyes Ben Laroussi. Defending Bhatia, Shanmugam claimed his client was not an addict and had been given the drug by a friend. Though he had 'a fleeting suspicion' the substance could be illegal, 'he took it on impulse, but did not know it was cocaine' he had just stuck up his nose when caught in the act. This nonsense persuaded the kindly judge to finally give this favoured son a prison sentence of only 8 months half of which was spent at home apparently wearing a bracelet. Meanwhile several simple drug mules were hanged for trafficking drug into Singapore - drugs that might possibly have ended up Bhatia's nostrils . This is just one of the many scandals I exposed in my book Once a Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock which resulted in my arrest and prison sentence for 'scandalising the judiciary.' This is not fake news - but it's the kind of real news that frightens the life out of Shanmugam and the PAP dictatorship.

I really cannot comprehend this. What was supposed to be a consultation, a feedback session, to provide suggestions to Singapore's legislative intention turned out to be a mini court trial. In fact, the outcome was there at the outset; that "there needs to be better safeguards, internal controls, if you may, for the sharing of data to third party application providers." There is really no need for this.

FB is not obligated to protect users or tell them if a data breach has been made. No system is secure enough to give assurance it wont be breached. Whose action is worse from consultation to interrogation directly lied upon too or not revealing something you dont need to as per developers but theres a need to as per politicians perspective. Politicians need to learn how internet works and developers needs to learn more about users security not just for their own.

The reasoning which Singapore runs by is definitely not what I deem a "reasonable person" would think of at all. The FB guy clearly made his stand and is holding it up, willing to even admit the flaws within the system. Besides, so many points were made that the foreign guy disagreed. Where is the capacity to engage in the dialogue fairly and give the opponent the ability to reconstruct the way you think, if there are indeed errors or shortsightedness? Isnt that the foundation of all learning and true dialogue? Are we arbitrators of all that is fair and logical? I dont think this is right.
