Sekiro Shadows Die Twice: How Hidetaka Miyazaki Took FromSoftware Back To Its Roots

Ойындар

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will likely never be allowed the luxury of being judged in its own right. the new game from legendary developer Hidetaka Miyazaki and FromSoftware is always going to live in the shadow of the Dark Souls series, for better or worse.
This is a shame. We have tremendous respect for Hidetaka Miyazaki for wanting to do something different. FromSoftware could easily have kept making Dark Souls games in an endless cycle for the rest of eternity. But instead, they're trying something different. They're pushing themselves and setting new goals for development, and that's to be commended.
Of course, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is not entirely new. The game benefits from lessons that FromSoftware learned while working on Soulsborne games, even as the studio goes in a new direction.
Sekiro also benefits from the legacy of other games in FromSoftware's back catalogue, such as Otogi: Myth of Demons and Ninja Blade.
Shadows Die Twice even benefits from lessons learned on Deracine (or Déraciné if you're feeling pretentious), as Hidetaka also spearheaded this game while working on Sekiro.
We haven't played Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice just yet, as it's only just been released and we've been rushing to finish this video. But however the new game turns out, we're grateful that FromSoftware has tried something new, rather than sticking to old, familiar paths.
Lots of love,

To be fair the stakes are really high when it comes to the AAA market. Miyazaki is now a "celebrity" director and his games are guaranteed to sell even if he's not at his best, but most directors don't have that status. You can't expect most companies to just risk tens of millions of dollars on a new IP when there's a seemingly safer option around.

About 30h in and I'm seriously thinking this might be better than Dark Souls and Bloodborne. I'll know once the honeymoon phase is over cause I'm pretty bad with that... Edit: 40h in and still feel the same. Right now the game seems to be an improvement in almost every way and I feel blasphemous for saying that as I love Soulsborne. Edit #2: After beating it 3x and currently on my 4th playthrough I'm not entirely sure if I prefer it over Soulsborne(SB). While it does play much better, does a better job at presenting a story while still presenting it the way most of us know and love about SB, it doesn't have as much lore. I also don't really like the soundtrack but that's more of a preference thing than anything else, I just really like the music used in SB alot more. God I hope we get some DLC as that would most likely shoot it way passed SB for me, this is truly an amazing game and surpassed my expectations, a nearly perfect follow-up to Soulsborne imo.

Yeah it's definitely a possibility for me so far, still haven't beaten it but I'm right at the end of the Return ending/playthrough. If I had to complain about something it's that it feels short even though I'm like 45h in, it just kinda crept up on me, the other one would be the Apparition miniboss(es) like the Headless, they used it a little too much imo and it's a pain to keep up a good stock of Divine Confetti to fight them(though I haven't tried out the Malcontent Prosthetic nor the upgraded Umbrella that's good for dealing with apparitions) all since there's quite a few scattered around the place

Imo they improved a lot of stuff gameplay wise. The tutorials for the moment are a necessary evil, since never has a souls game asked so much of you as a player. Most of the times it asks you to hone your skills at doing the same thing. Sekiro rarely does that, mostly does it in tough bosses. But even then, it asks you to use your head and a huge arsenal of tools to try something new and not get stuck banging your head against a wall, and not only that, it asks you to get profficient at everything, from stealth to combat and all of the in betweens. The only thing I felt was a step back sort of is the world and story. I love Bloodborne's story and setting so goddamn much that I believe it to be unrivaled in its mistery and darkness and lore and everything.

Thought the same thing to be honest! I love Soulsborne to death and I am still not sure if I like Sekiro or Bloodborne better but it def felt like an improvement in so many ways And as much as I love the storytelling in Soulsborne titles, having an actual more direct story and characters now give much more of an emotional impact imo

I also love Sekiro and think it's my favorite fast pace games are my weakness but Sekiro's Story is so, so, so basic only some npc have interesting stories. I didn't know Miyazaki decided to step back on the dialogs and Story, but I could definitely feel it, for the low number of items there are this time around sometimes doesn't even have lore on the description leaving empty spaces on the world and the dialogs are so basic. Sekiro is so dumb... Also, the music is not what I expected the soundtracks of FromSoftware have been incredible since dark souls 1 but I found a lot of tracks really repetitive this time around, If this game had an actual Great story and just a little better music, this would be a 10 out of 10. Still, love it tho.

"Instead of a lone, unimportant wander experiencing the game's story from the sidelines, this time, the player is thrown right into the fray as the most important person in the world" ... I'm not sold on this point. In Dark Souls 1 you are the "Chosen Undead." Yes your character is customizable, and at first you seem pretty irrelevant, but you're the one who usurps Gwyn. By your achievements, you certainly become the most important character. In Sekiro, you are the "Shinobi of the Divine Heir," you're a servant to the most important person, Kuro. Everything you do is motivated by him, or according to his goals. Perhaps you're the most powerful, and the lore is still in early days, but Wolf is pretty clearly presented as humble and loyal, he doesn't really call the shots. But, I get your drift that Sekiro certainly more directly implicates Wolf in the plot of the game, rather than Dark Souls, which is mostly based on inference.

  • @sodiumchloride7210

    @sodiumchloride7210

I actually think that, what is amazing about Dark Souls is how unimportant you really are until you make yourself important. Sure, you're "the chosen undead" but many others thought they were chosen but ended up giving up on their quest, just like that one npc said. You only end up being the chosen one because you prove yourself with your actions. In Sekiro you start as a well-known Shinobi, the son of owl and the servant of the divine heir. You don't actually evolve much from there in terms of your title (although Sekiro does grow as a person).

@Spire Wolves yea sry I didn't make myself clear but I was just saying I would like to see a darksouls/ zelda game . It is pretty clear the game was not based or intended to play like a zelda game, however for me personally when I play this game I could see parts of the game that I would like to see if zelda/darksouls actual became a reality, for example the hookshot feature in sekiro, the environment and also to an extent the bosses feel to be a mix of both darksouls and zelda type bosses. What I mean by this is traditionally zelda games require you to have a set strategy or order to defeating a boss whereas darksouls is mainly based on player skill. Sekiro's bosses from my experience fits perfectly in between the two. You could try and defeat a boss from pure skill or instead you could use a strategy which makes defeating the boss a lot easier and a lot less reliant on skill. Like i said this is definately far from one but it is something different from the usual darksouls game we get from fromsoftware and I can't help but find similarities between these two amazing series of games. (Sry for the long essay xd)

The soul of *cough* Souls game is overcoming difficulties Miyazaki always said how he wants the player to feel a sense of achievement, the difficulty is a necessary tool but it is never the main point, souls-like game would use souls mechanic most usually stamina system, rolling, losing souls and bonfire as well as healing, but that is rather superficial If we look at the best RPG of the year 2018 it was Monster Hunter World, the game does not have the traditional leveling/skill system through experience gained by defeating an enemy, your character stat is purely based on equipment, there are plenty of elements that do not go along the traditional RPG yet it is still one of the best RPG (ARPG) we got Most developer fails to see and replicate what made Souls game great, it was never about the superficial parts, it is about the experience resulted from the combination of all of its parts.

@@FinneousPJ1 well personally i think they are a small company. in some games. there are a 100 people working on just a simple game mode or something. 283 people to make an entire game, is not alot of people. and when you look at how they skip out on updates as long as the game work. not perfect but works. bloodborne never got ps4 pro update. that game has fram drops everywhere. and also now they are working on 2 new unannouced games wich they sayd before sekiro came out. 283 on at least 3 games is a small number. activision just fired 800 people a month ago or something. and when you play a game like sekiro for eks. you see soo much reuse, of engine, graphics, cut scenes, even the shinobi arm to sekiro has the same hand as bloodborne. a game that was finished 4 years ago. text, and alot more that does not give the entire game a new look. so much is reused. and i can list so many more things. as to why its a small company. and specially on the work they are doing. they need more people to work on different game to make EVERYTHING special. not to see reuse of something simple as text.

@@FinneousPJ1 and just too add. im not saying you have to be a large company to make great games. as i think from software does make the games in the world. its just if you wanna make a new ip, then make an entire new game. not just game mechanics. and if they do what the fans want, and give us more, we will throw money at them! and as we do that, they will grow into doing better games, so they dont have to bring in big guns and destroy a game like sekiro! its activisions fault sekiro failed in MY OPINION

With From Software making Tenchu Z and Activision making the original Tenchu, I wonder with all the similarities found in Sekiro's mechanics if this is more of a spiritual successor of Tenchu like Dark Souls was for Demon Souls. I see the influence of Otogi and Ninja Blade, but you can't deny how Tenchu this games feels.

  • @RealWeaponXI

    5 жыл бұрын

@bigevilworldwide1 From Software community manager Yasuhiro Kitao revealed that Sekiro was originally planned as a new installment of Tenchu, the studio's long-dormant stealth-action ninja series. "When we originally set out to create something different from Dark Souls and our previous titles, we thought it would be interesting to make a Japanese themed game. So from that we started going in the direction of the shinobi and ninja, and of course Tenchu was an IP with that history; that was the original impetus for this project," Kitao explained.

@bigevilworldwide1 “A lot of influence came from ‘Tenchu,'” Miyazaki said. “We even pondered upon making ‘Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’ a part of the ‘Tenchu’ series at first. Of course, after that we researched and referenced many other games as well; however, I think the largest influence was from ‘Tenchu.'”
