The Story of Hideo Kojima: How Metal Gear Launched the Career of a Gaming Icon

Ойындар

Hideo Kojima is widely considered to be one of the greatest icons in video game development. His enormously popular Metal Gear Solid series introduced a cinematic storytelling to gaming that was revolutionary in its time.
But Hideo Kojima's childhood wasn't always happy, and his early career as a developer at Konami could have gone better. It took a while for Hideo to produce his first big game, and throughout development of Metal Gear for the MSX, his colleagues at Konami all thought that his finished product would be a complete flop.
Yet in spite of family pressure and a lack of faith from his peers, Kojima has gone on to become one of the biggest names in gaming. Through hard work and sacrifice, Hideo has won a place in the annals of gaming.
This fist video covering Hideo Kojima's life covers his childhood, his early days at Konami, and the development of Metal Gear. At a later date (but not immediately) we'll come back to this story and explore how Kojima's most famous game, Metal Gear Solid, came to be.
Thank you everyone for your support and kind words, and for sharing our videos with your friends. We're really enjoying making these, even though they take a really long time to produce, and we often struggle to get them finished in a timely manner. We've got a few more videos almost ready that you'll be seeing in the coming weeks, but feel free to suggest ideas for future videos, we'd love to hear your suggestions.
The following first-hand sources and interviews with Hideo Kojima were used to create this video:
www.g4tv.com/videos/8957/icons...
web.archive.org/web/2007071307...
www.theguardian.com/technolog...
Have a look through the above resources if you'd like to learn more about the creator of Metal Gear Solid (and want to get insight into the mind behind Death Stranding!)
(Also, please forgive the crackly audio in this video. After three recording sessions, we ran out of patience and figured that this is good enough.)

The video is life-changing. Powerful one to motivate one's passion. I really wanted to become a game designer and follow the footsteps of Kojima. The only difference between us is that he is more in the action-stealth adventure games and me on the jrpg aspect like final fantasy but I enjoyed playing his games until now. I already have ideas in my mind and started writing it out just recently.

Just A Quick Correction.....Hideo developed the stealth mechanic for the first Metal Gear games because the NSX operating system wasn't powerful enough to realize what he first had in mind for the game. Kinda like how the chocolate chip cookie was first "invented".

I was actually just about to post the same thing. The MSX struggled with smooth scrolling and could only handle so many sprites on screen at a time. So the workaround was to make enemies very dangerous, and make avoiding them the better option. Incidentally, the first stealth action game, Escape from Castle Wolfenstein for the Apple 2, used a similar philosophy, and I believe they did so for similar reasons. Not that one stole from the other, they just arrived at the same logical solution to the same problem.

I love Kojima so much, I became obsessed with him long before being familiar with his games (I knew he makes games, I'm talking about his games series in general, it doesn't mean I didn't know a popular series like MGS by name), he became my role model and I want to achieve my dreams because of him, I'm not a good artist, I felt like a laughing stock in my school, not only my art school but even back in middle school, I've been an outcast too, I'm still one, I've always felt bad for my art because class mates said if I can't do something I shouldn't even try because I ruined a school project, when I knew about Kojima's story I felt so empowered I only needed to think about him to feel better, and I know my boyfriend because of him, he was reading my experience on my Tumblr page and he started following me on Twitter, we talked for a while, I started feeling bad but he was able to cheer me up, because I had to remember what I said about what Kojima has been through and started to talk about Kojima and his influences, and we talked again and again, I asked for his Facebook account, I was afraid of him saying no, but he was fine with it, we immediately started chatting, we became instant friends, he was so surprised to see someone trust him so quickly because he has few friends, he told me about his past, and his depression, I cried. We also started to facecam, I was so shy the first time.Everyday that passed by, I felt something growing, I knew I loved him, despite the fact I'm from Italy and his from India, and I cried every night because I wasn't able to keep that inside, and I wanted to tell him my feelings once he visited me here, but it was too much, too much, and I was afraid of being rejected, because I've always been the chubby, unattractive tomboy.During this period of time I bought him MGS, he was so touched by my act of kindness, I had money for myself and I used it to buy him a present.I wasn't able to wait for too long, but I was afraid of confessing my feelings on a video call, everybody says you should never confess your feelings like that. The night between the 29th and the 30th of September, I started crying in front of him, I told him, I was so afraid of his response and he told me has always loved me, I was so happy and we'll meet later this year, our dream is to meet Kojima, and he promised me we will.Recently he's working so hard for me, when I think about it I can't helo but cry.

It's weird that a few simple words of earnest support about following your dreams and it will all pay off one day is enough to destroy my normal composer. . Most people try to tell you to be reasonable and get a job that pays well. Hell, even I will tell people not to be artists since a really large portion of them tend to end in failure. However, HP Lovecraft was an utter failure his entire life and only truly became famous after he died. John Carpenter all though hailed as a master of suspense/horror flicks is ridiculously crotchety about the fact he didn't make much off of most his most acclaimed classics. All you'll hear from him nowadays is "Pay Me". He is worth 35 million though which isn't bad but not nearly as much as Josh Whedon at 100 million and about 20 years younger. Anyway, byeee.

This is incredibly interesting, well put together, and very touching. As a fan of the Metal Gear series, I feel all the more blessed to have had the opportunity of growing up with them. But at the same time, seeing what Konami has become now and done to the series, to the games, I can't help but feel sorrow for Kojima, who left the company recently. Yet, your background information also puts a fresh perspective on the criticism Kojima received at the hands of his former employer. How sour and however, must that relationship have become, for Konami to forbid Kojima from collecting an award for Metal Gear Solid 5? He left, but he will continue to work with his own, now independent, studio. Perhaps, Kojima will always be or remain an outcast, to some extend? Would a follow-up episode be worth it, in that regard? About the years and struggles after his first found success?

    1. Kojima wasn't alone in developing Metal Gear from the start. He already had friends excited by the idea of a game with an actual mobie-like scenario. 2. I can't speak to your personal situation and best path, but what I can tell you is my own experience (this is Kotor the artist speaking by the way). After graduating university, I ended up in a dead end job for about a year. I was working int he complaints department of a bank, and it was awful. One day I decided I'd have enough, and I quit. I didn't have anything else to go to, so I panicked a lot. It was the scariest thing I'd ever done. But I worked at things, and tried my best at doing more creative work. For a while I worked as a freelance cartoonist, although the work wasn't really all that consistent, so I eventually sidestepped into writing, which made use of a lot of my skills I'd learned studying Communications at university. My job description is ever changing, and I don't have nearly enough time free to work on pet projects like these KZread videos, but I'm making a living writing about movies for several small-time nerdy websites. I did a stint as a games journalist, too, and I still write reviews and previews on occasion. The important thing is that I'm happy with my job, and excited by the future. So while I can't speak to your own situation, I can say that I love the life of a freelancer, and even though it took a while, I finally found a job that makes use of my own talents. Good luck, whatever you decide.

If moving on is something you feel you need to do, it's definitely worth finding the right time. I made the jump in large part because BretonStripes was pregnant and we knew I'd never have another chance to start fresh (it also helped that my salary at the bank wasn't going to support a baby). It's definitely a difficult decision to make, and I wouldn't recommend jumping without a set plan like I did, but if I've learned anything over the past couple of years, it's that there are definitely places where your talents will be more appreciated, as long as you're willing to work hard.

I'm running out of new ways to say "this was yet another really good one" :P But seriously, once again I definitely found this inspiring. While I'm lucky enough to be surrounded by people who understand and encourage my creative pursuits, I can definitely say I'm having to be REALLY patient so far in figuring out how exactly to go about them, which is getting more and more difficult and terrifying as I get closer to graduating from college and needing some semblance of a plan for what to do with my life. There was one part that of this episode that felt especially relatable to me: Much like Hideo, one major problem I constantly run into is my lack of skills. The two things I'm most interested in working on right now are comic strips and adventure games, but I don't have much in the way of art or programming skills, and getting help in those departments can be tough. Not only that, but while I have a lot of confidence in my ability to come up with fun ideas and story elements, I'm not very good and planning or structuring plots :/ Anyway, all that to mainly say that this was another video that resonated with me, and helps keep me determined to figure things out one way or another. Thanks :)

People have gone a bit overboard with Konami hate they aren't some great Satan like people make them seem they were a major part of Kojima life and creative outlet they just let corporate beuocracy get the better of them.

The shady shit started a few years ago when Konami's CEO changed. Before that, everything was fine. The new CEO just saw how much debt Konami was in and decided that all this stuff that we hate about Konami nowadays is a way to get rid of the debt. Like treating their workers like dirt whilst focusing on Pachinco Machines. Surely there could have been better ways but oh well.

Great video of Kojima's jump into the video games industry. However I found a couple discrepancies: the original Metal Gear released on the MSX2, not the MSX. It was also translated to English for parts of Europe, but the quality of the translation is very poor (just like the NES version). Lastly, speaking of the NES version, it was made under a three month deadline by a different team at Konami without consent from the original team behind the MSX2 version. Cheers!

Nice video. I like how the story is captured by the art and voice audio, and how the moral of the story is always involved. I would like to see the story behind how Street Fighter was made, and what the creators had to go through. These videos are so great :)

I can't confirmed or denied, but in an interview I read in a magazine he said that he make the stealth mechanic cause in all games enemy go to attack you and you had yo attack back, he wanted to change that, so you can choose to attack or hide from enemies.

I remember playing metal gear and loving it, the most annoying part was the keycard system. Throughout the game, you would get a bunch of keycards, 12 in total if I remember right. Every locked door would respond to exactly one keycard, and there was absolutely no way of telling which one it was. Every locked door boiled down to this irritating process. Press select. Open Equipment. Select card 1. Back out of menu. Door doesn't open. Press select. Open Equipment. Select card 2. Back out of menu. Door doesn't open. Press select. Open Equipment. Select card 3. Back out of menu. Door doesn't open.

"He *needed* to tell stories""He needed a creative outlet" And that's when I sympathized and loved Mr. Kojima even more. I have a *seriously* hyperactive mind and want to pursue a similar alternative story telling career like Mr. Kojima. Honestly I started to hate Konami for firing him (though considering Japanese work standards, it might have been merciful) Though, at least Konami HAD given Mr. Kojima a chance at starting out
