Another thing is I gave my business part a orange monster about 5 years ago right off my wrist, he was a Rolex owner for over 30 years that we have been in business together and owned a 1675 GMT Master all the way up to a solid gold blue dial submariner and settled for a 16613 TT blue dial sub for the longest time until I gave him the Seiko. He has worn the monster for at least 5 years and is in his late 70's and a father figure to me and bought me my first 2 Rolex watches, just talked to his wife as they retired in Oregon a few years ago and i'm still in Cali running the business, she just sold his 16613 to their jeweler along with some of her jewelry, not for the funds but because it has sat in his drawer since wearing the monster.. Weird but a guy that could afford any watch and has settled on a monster and the 150 dollar one at that!!!!

Where are you finding any gen Monster for $150??
@iHaejeog

Six Mile Creek Productions Not anymore. The prices shot up once they started to be discontinued. The gen 1 typically run $200+ while the gen 2 run $300+ and the gen 3 are not worth their price tag.

I'm a new subscriber. Thank you for taking the time to share all of this watch information with us!
excellent review, It gave me the information I needed !
Great review, J... I have the new Monster, as well as a Sumo and Blumo -- both of which now have Strapcode Angus Jubilee bracelets. Huge improvement! Monster kept its much better OEM though. Hope things get better for you. Take care!
Jay the Seiko baby monster was the 1st watch I had in my collection now many watches later you have convinced me to add the 1st gen monster to it. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience which has helped me avoid a lot of costly mistakes. Keep up the good work.

which do you like better?
Anthony, another great video!!! I like how you changed the scene with the very large dining room at the beginning and end and the dark wood table for the review. The table helped bring the details of the watches more. I like both the monster and the sumo, but I really like the look and feel of the turtle. For me that vintage look at a modern size does it. Speaking of the monster's bracelets contrasts, I have an SSC505 that contrasts the same way. It's a subtle, beautiful look. Sorry to hear that life has thrown a curve ball. You are walking just fine, then out of nowhere you trip on something you didn't see or expect. I really hope it does get better soon for you.
It has been a while. Nice video, keep m posted
The case finishing on JDM Seikos is just amazing. They really know how to make a sharp transition between brushing and polishing.
So good video. thanks bro. Sweden
Definitely missing the corvette in the titles :(......but loving the videos....thank you for taking the time to make them
I really enjoy your channel
Great comparison!
I took the monster to the day club the other day ;) great review
Own the Blumo and one of the best watches I’ve ever owned. Agree with everything you’ve said about the Sumo except the bracelet. I actually really like the stock Seiko bracelet lol 😂.
I feel ya. I love my Monster and it's surprisingly very comfortable and looks even better on the wrist than in the box. Been thinking of getting the Sumo... but don't like the Prospex logo on the dial.
Great review bro, I've owned 1 Orange and 2 Black Monsters, old style 7s26 with the square hour markers. always loved it. 007 and 009 I've had as well. I really like the Sumo now, going to try and source one. Monster bracelet is a beast!! I really wish Seiko would venture away from Hardlex and institute Sapphire. The bracelet on the Sumo looks similar to a cheap Orient bracelet. The Sumo case is amazing.
I'm still in love with the 2nd gen monster, the teeth indices are perfect!
great video and you have no need to apologize. Your frequency is up to you.
I agree, I have a Monster Gen. 1 and I love it. The fit and finish as you said feels like a much more expensive timepiece and the movement of the bezel is second to none. I recently had the crystal replaced and had it calibrated. I wished mine would hack but what can I say. I paid like 170.00 back when they first came out. Mine keeps excellent time now after the calibration and you can hack it to a degree it just takes patients. thanks for a great video.

Great comparison. if my wrist was larger, I would get a Sumo. I still have my gen 1 black monster from 2011. Took a while for me to get use to it. Thought about selling it a couple times but that changes when I wear it again.
Great comparison!! I'm in a strange position again of having no Seiko! I have my vintage Citizen Eagle 7 but I think I should have a modern Seiko...
I have both with the same 6R15 movement, and i love them both.
Great comparison, best wishes in dealing with the life situations you mentioned, hope things calm down for you soon. Was thinking about the monster featured here, which is a watch that I can't imagine ever wearing, but completely appreciate for its cool factor and originality, and I think that if you made a video about how you relate to your collection as a whole, that might be interesting to many people. i. e., is it just a bunch of individual watches to you, or are your decisions about what to get next affected by the context of the collection? Would something have to be wearable in order for you to add it? Stuff like that. Because I would happily buy a monster, never wear it, and it would serve a purpose in the collection just by sitting in the box, complementing my other Seikos. Would be great to hear about issues like this from you at some point, good job with the review once again!
I have had my first generation (7s26) Monster for over 10 years. It is still my favorite for daily wear and when I travel. It balances practical engineering choices with aesthetically pleasing visual cues. Even when not used for diving it sure can take knocks. There have been times I thought I smashed the dial but Hardlex is as Hardlex does.
Great video! I have a lot of the Seiko divers. MM300, Shogun, Sumo, Monster, Turtle and the SKX 007 and 009. I love them all. I really love the hands on the Sumo. Just something about them; they are gorgeous. The MM is glorious. The Turtle feels like a bigger SKX to me however it does feel better on the wrist because it seems to lay flatter. I wish wish wish that I could remove the divers extension on the stock bracelets. That little extra piece digs into my wrist and I cannot stand it. The only one I can somewhat tolerate it on is the Shogun due mainly to it being titanium which makes it feather light. Cheers.
J you are the number one seiko fan boy,I just don't know one minute I like the monster the next I hate it but one sure thing 7s you can't ignore it. 👍
I own the Orange Monster second gen. & Black Sumo. Love them both.

I dig the monster as well. Recently picked up the 3rd gen and love it.
Another honest and true review. About the 6R15 movement, yes my two watches with the ETA2824 movement are both more accurate than my Seiko 6R15 movements. I agree.

I still enjoy my first gen orange monster. I keep coming back to it, sure the movement isn't anything special but, the 7s26 runs forever.
Hey J, what's your take on the 62mas reissue this year at Basel?
Can you please do a lume comparison between Monster, Sumo, Samurai and Baby Tuna?
I like the Sumo a lot. If I needed a watch for some traveling/hiking/backpacking, I would take it over my more expensive watches in a heartbeat. Rugged and handsome. --Michael
Could've sworn you had the orange dial monster. Thanks j, hope all is well.
J. go to strapcode and pick a bracelet with clasp adjustable, it will turn your sumo perfect

I used to hate the Seiko Monster thinking it was too large but after handling one in person, I realized it was the same size as an SKX but it felt more substantial on the wrist and now it is my favorite diver.

That was my initial reaction too, then I started to realise that it's design was based around functionality except maybe the indices on the gen 2 being shark toothed, which is Seiko's nod to its nickname. Love it or hate it, one thing's for sure, it has wrist presence. My OM has garnered the most interest of any watch I've owned.

Great review, I feel the sumo is a much better watch...but I've owned several monster's over the years in both orange & black dials and while none stuck I did keep a bracelet to put on another watch. I really miss the 150.00 dollar Monster looking back with its great lume and a bullet proof watch. Prices they are asking for the new version are out of control but still cheaper than most Swiss watches..
The 2nd Gen Monster introduced me to the world of horology and I'm always grateful for that. I liked the Dracula version so much that I got an orange variant before they went out of production (apparently) and wore it daily for six months before I slipped on a patch of ice getting the paper one bitterly cold morning and killed it. The love for Monsters led to discovery of other Seiko divers and I have owned an SSC019, BFK, SKX007, SPR773 Turtle, SBDC031 Sumo, and SBBN035 Ninja Tuna. As fond a spot I have in my heart for the two Monsters, I find that the Sumo is more appealing to me and along with the SKX, they are the favorites of my collection. The Sumo was transformed into a brilliant summertime watch by the addition of a Crafter Blue rubber strap. Brilliant lume, distinctive design, amazing case, reasonable price, accurate automatic movement, cult status amongst WISes -- the Sumo really is the jewel in Seiko's affordable diver crown. Not that the Turtle or SKX aren't damned good, but the Sumo gets the nod due to the little extras, in my experience.
can you do a seiko stargate review? really wanna get you take on it. thanks
Hi Anthony, Thanks for a GREAT! Review of these Watches, I Own the The 'Sumo (green Dial) Japan & The Seiko monster SRP the only thing that puts me off is that the 'Monster' has a Korean movement, Can you please give me your comments on this..Thanks again for your Video....David Stewart
Yeah, for me too the Monster wins. Great watch with its own style. I have the orange Monster but am considering getting another.
The Monster on the other hand is in its own aesthetic category. And man is it comfortable on the wrist! --Michael
like others I am starting to like monster but orange would be cool. might as well go totally wild. wish it was no date because I probably would not wear it much.
J., check out the new Seiko SBDC051. It's a Seiko prospex diver with a Sapphire crystal and forged steel clasp! I know... mind "BLOWN!" I too love my Seiko Monster... I'm very tempted to have a second watch collection dedicated to just Seikos (Monster, Sumo, SBDC051, Progue) to go with my Speedmaster, Fortis B-42, Sinn 140, Vostok Amphibia (see a theme?)
Ma786sai Dua Absolutely I just got a Jade 2019 Monster SZSC005 and a blue coral reef Monster SBDC067. Robust brutal Architecture. Have all the Steel Sports Rolex’s, many Omega, Breitling and Zenith watches. But last month felt a desire to got both these monsters and also a Baby Tuna SBDY055. Also a black Sumo SBDC031
My black monster seems to need an overhaul every 5-7 years. That's a tough pill to swallow ($150 service for a $200 watch), but I do love the watch. Something about having chunk of steel on your wrist. Also, I've had it down to 100 feet with no problems. If I buy a dive watch I better be able to dive with it.
Would love for you to do a review on the Baby Tuna PADI..)

Love the Monster's the Sumo I don't know just looks too generic to me. I guess I own around 20 Divers.Thanks for sharing. OOOPPPS! The china cabinet is awesome. Is it your Moms? Reminds me of my Grandma's.
I really love my Blumo. It looks classy on the wrist, yet feels tough enough for any occasion. And at about 400-500 bucks, it straggles the line between beater and high end so it can play in both worlds. One thing funny about Seiko bracelets is even though you know they are cheap, there is a certain charm about them. The Blumo just fits so good on my wrist and even though it is large, it fits snug because of the curved lugs. It just looks and feels so good on the wrist. Seiko is really good at making a watch for everybody that just feels right and when you find it, you realize it feels even better on your wrist than it does when you are just looking at its beauty in hand, it is meant to be worn and with you on your adventures. Also just my personal opinion but the Sumo looks as good esthetically as the MM300 but 1/4 the cost.
I like The Seiko Monster original case design and beautiful bracelet. I like the Seiko Sumo big size. I own a Black Seiko Monster and an Orange Seiko Monster. I am going to buy the Seiko Sumo.
Hi.buddy...how lume is better or longer???thanks a lot
Enjoyed it and now want a Monster! Dammit
Interestingly, the 7s26 in my Seiko and the ETA in my Breitling both ran 7 seconds slow per day straight out of the box. Also in my experience an ETA2824 will run for 10 to 12 years without a service, at which point it begins to slow and then stop, Seiko movements run for 20 plus years without a service and worn daily..

"Also in my experience [...] Seiko movements run for 20 plus years without a service and worn daily" -- How many Seiko watches have you worn daily for 20 years without service?

The Seiko 5 my mother bought me for my 14th birthday in 1982, and the same for my brother in '84. I wore mine pretty much every day for 23 years. I still wear it occasionally, it's on it's third bracelet and loses about a minute a day but still functions adequately.
@mountainhobo

You so you know of two watches with 7S26 movement (none of the watches in the video uses that movement), and one of them is a minute off a day, and you don't think it needs servicing. Okidoki.
@petershallis2294
7 жыл бұрын
Ok, first of all those watches have movements that are based on the 7S26, secondly I never said that a watch could run accurately after not being serviced for 20 years, just that it - in my experience - still runs.

The MONSTER is BADASS BRO! I Love It. Good video. And Good Call your Haters that are against the MONSTER dont know SHIT!
Great video. Love the sumo case but has two flaws as a watch I can't get over. 1. Second hand too short, like the samurai as well. 2. 12 o'clock marker camel toe...
state of the collection maybe ???
Monster hands down. As you stated: UNMISTAKABLE

Forgot to add: Wish these had an hour bezel for time zone change. Would make it more practical.
That's "pierced lugs", maybe on a dive watch they should call them "speared lugs", or "harpooned lugs" aye... LOL But they should use softer stem spring on these if they're going to use the same undersized stem tubes on these under threaded screw down crowns.
how much is the retail price of a sumo?
Seiko rules! There's one for everbody, sometimes more!
Looking for those rare 2nd Gen Monster is like looking for a rare Pokémon 🐲
I love your videos, but you really need to change up the music once and a while.
Monster fan 100%.

I have 5 monsters, love them, i do not have a sumo
Yeaaaaah!!! The Monster 😲
None of these 2 watches appeal to me for some reason.
Blumo rules, Monster drools.
If you can't convince others to buy a Monster, no one can :)
6r15 more accurate i have a monster gen 2 and its spot on accurate
the monster for 150 is great but ne thing over 300 is a rip off
I have to say my second gen monster keeps better time than my Sumo.
gen 2 monster IMHO are the best. not really worth to spend on a gen 3 monster.... just higher movement , nothing else changes, no sapphire and loses the DAY
2:05 "The Sumo would win on movement because it's a 6r15 vs. 4r36" -- Hm. 6r15 is not exactly a horological prize. Yes, it has a bit more power reserve than 4r36, but it still beats at only 3 Hz, is not very accurate (let's go by Seiko's own spec, not anecdotal evidence of amazing accuracy by overly enthusiastic user or two), and it loses the day display compared to 4r36, which some consider a very desirable feature on a tool watch. Therefore, I would not exactly jump to conclusion that it's an automatic win. It is certainly a win for Seiko, which now charges nearly double for the next generation of the Monster (still with hardlex), but that's not the same as a win for the consumer.
@mountainhobo

Dive watch is a tool watch. Any watch designed for a specific work task is a tool watch. Climbing watch is a tool watch, too. "Tool" as in "Tool to do the job". Tool watches are tough and purpose built. I don't care whether "traditional dive watches" had day complication. I hope you understand that if Seiko depended for sales of Monsters only on people who actually dive, they wouldn't sell s#. 99.9% of those watches are sold either to desk divers or people who just want a general tough watch, and a lot of those people do value the day complication. But hey, let's see, shall we? First, and particularly the second generation of the Monster became iconic. How is the third generation doing so far? I hardly see anyone even talk about them.
@mountainhobo
7 жыл бұрын
Please stop wasting my time with "real watch categories". I am referring to a commonly used concept of a "tool watch". Stop pretending you don't know what that means. My point is the 3rd gen of Monsters is a failure. The end. It was a mistake, too little, too greedy. If you still didn't get that point by the time we got all the way here, please let's stop wasting each other's time. Life is too short.
A brilliant way to spend 18 minutes.
All Seiko divers are clunky and there is no comparison to the Omega. As an example, look at the thickness!

No, that's not the case my wise friend. A man should wear a watch and simply forget about it. It's not a piece of jewelry to be worn in an event to show off... A male's look should impresses by being "proper" not by being flashy. +45mm watches are deemed to look inappropriate amidst other men, not to mention uncomfortable in prolonged wear... This 45mm diver cannot be worn and look proper in work/meetings/even casually, and if you think you can strap this on your wrist and still look humble and welcoming amidst others, you're misinformed.
@brianhinder3652
7 жыл бұрын
What you are confusing is convention and taste. As I have recently cited, a dress watch is considered to be 40mm or less. I would NEVER wear a diver to work/meetings unless the particular circumstances demanded it. Some professional divers watches are 52mm in diameter (Tauchmeister T0142 XXL!) If that is the sole watch of the owner who are we to say that bloke shouldn't wear it casually. And what about big wristed gentleman? A 36mm which suits 6-7 Inch wrists would look tiny and completely out-of-place on an 8 inch or larger wrist. In addition SOME men do regard watches as jewellry ... you just have to look at BaselWorld for evidence of that. I'm afraid my initial comment still stands Sir !
The Sumo is simply too large for my wrist but I can see its appeal. I agree about the Sumo bracelet. It feels stiff and chunky whereas the Monster bracelet is like smooth flowing tank treads. I wish both had machined clasps like that seen on the Transocean or Kinetic divers but the cheap stamped clasp is plenty secure and low-profile on the underside of the wrist. Great comparison video! I'm going to put on my Gen 3 dark blue Monster now!
