Seestar S50 Smart Telescope Review + Tutorial

Ғылым және технология

In this review I tested a first production version of the Seestar S50 Smart Telescope. I'll show you how to setup the SEESTAR S50 APP, how to image the Sun, the Moon, and Deep Sky Objects with this telescope, and other stuff the SEESTAR APP has to offer like an impressive virtual sky atlas and a whole community tab for seestar users. It's an impressive and affordable telescope that makes entry into astrophotography accessible to newcomers and folks who are looking for an affordable and time-saving way to start astrophotography!

    What a great review Wido! Nice and detailed and clearly presented. If I was starting out in Astrophotography for deep space, I would definitely start with this unit. Thinking a bit more, I may get one anyway as my job has me traveling to various locations in Western USA some of which are remote and on hills/mountains. The portability and quick set up of the Seestar would make it pretty easy to pack and take on these trips.

    I've watched several review videos. This is the best I've seen. I've ordered one (right at the end of ZWO's introductory pricing). I am hoping that I will have it by Christmas so my friends and family can see and maybe even use it. I have two very good telescopes but both are set up for astrophotography and really don't work for "outreach" to my family. In addition, I hope to use it for the 2024 total solar eclipse. I am hoping you or others my have some videos for using this scope for such imaging.

    Excellent video! Picked up some nice tips in addition to being an in depth review. I've viewed numerous reviews of the Seestar S50 and there is still one thing lacking I'd like to see. ALL the reviews tend to show what one can achieve with relatively short total imaging times (1/2 to 3 hours). I'd like to see what's possible with 8-12 hour sessions on a single target or even stacking images from multiple nights.

    Hi Wido! I've watched many reviews of the Seestar. Cuiv did a very good one, others where also good, but your's is the best review of them all. I've bought the Vespera from Vaonis last December. It's very similar to the Seestar. It uses the same sencor, it also has an aperture of 50 mm and a focal length of 200 mm. But it's much more expansive, and you have to pay extra for a lot of stuff, that's already implemented into the Seestar. The ZWO Seestar is the superior scope with a much better price. I'm selling my Vespera and I'll buy a Seestar for Christmas. I really like these smart telescopes and I think, they are the future. I had so many failures with my standard rigg. Somtimes there's a software issue. Plate solving or guiding won't work. You put out your rigg and in the end you have gained nothing. I think everyone has experienced this in the past. I work in shifts. When I come home from the late shift after 11pm and I see there's a clear sky, I would never think of putting my standart rigg out there, cause it would take too much time to set everything up. But with a smart scope like the Seestar, you can still have some fun. You place it in your backyard and after a few minutes, the first pictures are rolling in. This is just the beginning . In a few years, you will be able to buy smart telescopes, where you can change the camera sencor or you can add a barlow lence to increase the focal lenght and you may be able to use them in an equatorial mode. I'm looking forward to this, cause it will make astronomy and astrophotography much more accessible to a lot of people.

    150% agree. I have a Seestar and a Vanois Vespera. Originally for travel. My regular rig is a Esprit 100ED on a HEQ5 mount. ZWO Air+ running everything. Setup during the day. Wait for night. Start all the steps. Maybe 45 minutes later I can start imaging things. I really enjoy just plopping one of these down, ( I put one on the North side and one on the south side of my house,) and in minutes I am getting images.

  • @GenXMCraft

    @GenXMCraft

    8 ай бұрын

    I’ve seen one or two side by sides, the Seestar had better quality results imo…. more nuances captured. Seestar has less of a field of view, better for specific objects, where dwarf shows more. Both would be better if you could modify the FOV a bit. Dwarf not releasing iOS full featured was a poor strategy, but understandable. Dwarf can be mounted equatorial and that’s a huge advantage for tracking and stacking. Seestar app runs on Linux. 🤓

  • @pepponeskie

    @pepponeskie

    @@GenXMCraft I'm waiting for Wido or Cuiv to review these two since they have credibility as well. I saw one guy in Ytube saying he was approached by ZWo to review Seestar S50 but he declined, instead he just did the talking against Seestar S50 which IMO is a "She say, He say" thing and made him lost his credibility. Its hard to decide between the two and I know you can't get wrong whichever you pick.😎

  • @AstroForumSpace

    @AstroForumSpace

    OK, I'll get on it as soon as the clouds are gone:-). They are actually two different animals. The DWARF ii is a wider field telezoom lens that in combination with the widefield lens is great as a spotting scope. It can also capture wider field objects like andromeda or ngc7000 in one picture. The Seestar is a full fledged apo 50/250mm refractor and gets better resolution images of the Sun and Moon. But the FOV is limited to about 1.3 x 0.7 degrees. Good for some targets worse on others. I do like the seestar APP design...in short, pros and cons. It depends on your personal preferences. Cheers!

    Yes, that's the point of a smart telescope. Alternatives in this price range would be the Dwarf II Smart Telescope (see my comparison video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4h_p8OmdpfLedo.html) or a good quality star tracker with a DSLR camera (check: astroforumspace.com/best-star-trackers-for-astrophotography-in-2023/). Wile I find this very cool, I am not a fan of all ap controlled devices of any kind. Its another thing to charge, another thing that might not be supported a few years from now. I am a experienced ameture astronomer and some other things that concerm me about this scope is a dew shield, or lack of one. I'm hoping to use my SeeStar for recording the upcoming eclipse in April. Any suggestions, beyond using the solar filter? Would you use Timelapse mode to record everything from C1 to C4? Would you use regular video recording mode for just C2 to C3? Is it easy to switch back and forth?

    Rotate the solar filter until the handle is vertical. The sun will shine through hole in handle across top of scope body. This can be your guide.

    Thinking of getting this for the 2024 solar eclipse. I see a problem if you want to take a continuous video of, let's say the final 10 seconds before totality and then into total. However I'm wondering if you can get rid of the solar filter when the sun is total?

Can i use a Standard Mirror type, that a can get fit at a glazier. or is it a special kind of mirror ? Thanks Man.. Always great with Good teachers online. :)

    Curious to get your take on how Seestar images compare to DSLR images taken using a tracker like the Star Adventurer or Move-Shoot-Move. I own both, but am looking for something that will give me comparable images with less weight and no polar alignment setup..........getting too old and arthritic for the weight and eyesight to do a good job with them. Thanks!

  • @AstroForumSpace

    Hi Bill, it's mostly different in terms of ease of use. Lightweight, connect to the app and telescope over wifi, and the scope just slews to your target and starts imaging. There is a limited 10s exposure so faint parts of a nebula will not be photographed and the sensor is pretty small and in portrait mode. Star tracker is polar aligned and may give you longer exposures with your dslr. But it needs to be polar aligned first.
