Seeing The Universe Like We've Never Seen It Before

Ғылым және технология

Now that the James Webb Space Telescope has released its first images, it’s time for the science programs to begin.
We meet 5 scientists who will be using the telescope during its first cycle of operations looking at the earliest galaxies, red giant stars in the disc of Andromeda, star forming regions in the MIlky Way and nearby galaxies, the Trappist-1 exoplanet system, and mysterious icy bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune.

Amazing how even in a documentary such as this they don't present the information in full context. There are 13 habitable zones currently known a planet must be in all at once for life. Liquid water is only one. It's disingenuous to always be labeling the "habitable zone" as only the liquid water zone. To date we have not found one planet that falls in more than two of those thirteen zones. The only planet we know of that is in three or more is earth.

One thing we have to keep in mind is the differences in technology over the past 20-30 years, when Hubble was released. It was launched about 32 years ago and for its time, it was probably the latest and greatest in imaging technology (this pre-dates most of the digital imaging technology we have today, although more advanced than any imaging technology say from the 1970's and 80's when the Voyagers were released -- at that time, I'm sure those imaging technologies were also top of the line). And I'm sure in another 10-20 years, something will replace the JWT optics as optical technology changes over time.

But maybe there have been many super nova explosions there in that time? I read that there is 1 supernova every 50 year in the milky way, so if this info was correct then in the course of 290 million years a compact cluster of galaxies could have potentially hundreds of millions of supernovas occuring in that time, depending on how many galaxies is actually part of said cluster, and their sizes.

You can't. You are living in a fantasy. You cannot ever see that far into anything. You only SEE stars because they are close not trillions of light years away or anything in between. The inverse square law describes the intensity of light at different distances from a light source. Every light source is different, but the intensity changes in the same way. The intensity of light is inversely proportional to the square of the distance. This means that as the distance from a light source increases, the intensity of light is equal to a value multiplied by 1/d2,. The proportional symbol, , is used to show how these relate. The relationship between the intensity of light at different distances from the same light source can be found by dividing one from the other. The formula for this is shown below. Visible light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, and the inverse square law is true for any other waves or rays on that spectrum, for example, radio waves, microwaves, infrared and ultraviolet light, x rays, and gamma rays. The intensity of visible light is measured in candela units, while the intensity of other waves is measured in Watts per meter squared (W/m2).

Yes, the potential is endless, and as an older person I hope I live to see wonders of James Webb ST. At the same time we must not discount the proof of unidentifiable technologies recorded clearly on camera these past few years around planet Earth. Exciting times.

Older is relative. I'm now pushing 82, still ride a motorcycle and am meeting a 'friend' coming from the east coast. Will then plan riding together, hopefully back in CA, where I will introduce him to some great and relatively lightly traveled roads. However, we will certainly ride to Roswell, NM, and tour the UFO museum there.

The fact that we're viewing what many of the stars, galaxies, and nebulae looked like billions of years ago rather than what they look like now is fascinating. But, even greater than that, it allows us to imagine that many of those images are now proper solar systems with stars and planets by now. It also allows us to better imagine what our own galaxy, star, and solar system looked like in their infancy.

the tragic realisation from that is that we will never visit other galaxies, no matter how advanced we get. they are just too far away in space and time. anybody who thinks humans will ever travel like in scifi movies is delusional.

The James Webb Space Telescope. - What a _monumental_ human undertaking, and simultaneously - a genuine testament to our species unique potential! . . . A beautiful documentary, I am spellbound. Brings me nearly to tears that I did not have any great interest in the sciences as a child and at university, and now at sixty years of age, that makes me quite sad. However, tools like KZread have ignited my passion for all sciences, and I can get a glimpse of what I missed. As a scientific oriented and use science in my work, I have a strong belief that this beautiful Universe can only be the work of Intelligent Design. I have no doubt, from my sliver of the Multiverse. These fantastic discoveries and research confirms my belief in an afterlife, whatever form it takes.
