Seeing Flamethrowers Up Close: One Veteran's Harrowing Iwo Jima Experience | Remember WWII
PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING OUR MISSION ON PATREON: / rememberww2
Carl Berghofer is a great friend of the channel. Two years ago we published a 30-minute edit of Mr Berghofer's remarkable testimony. This week we decided to revisit his interview, and bring you an extended cut so that you can learn more about the realities and horrors of war, and particularly World War II in the Pacific.
Mr Berghofer joined the Marines as a teenager, and found himself shipped off to the Pacific - first to the Marshall Islands, then Guam, before being sent to the infamous island of Iwo Jima. Mr Berghofer witnessed the beach assault first-hand, taking part in a battle that saw fierce fighting in the caves and peaks of that island. From witnessing up-close the use of flamethrowers on the Japanese, to the experience of fighting with knives in caves and tunnels, Mr Berghofer's testimony is some of the most detailed and important first-person testimony of that battle.
We're thankful to Mr Berghofer for sharing his war story with us, and for his sacrifice and service in that most awful of conflicts.

Also, a very practical promise: non-Japanese captured on the battlefield by the Japanese were not treated very well - and I'm being deliberately vague by saying it that way.

My great uncle was a Japanese POW n the US government sent a letter to his wife saying he'd been captured n was presumed dead...my family along with his wife n children held an actual funeral for him to grieve their loss then a little over a year later he came home...he never spoke of his experiences and just devoted the rest of his life to Christ...he actually outlived all his siblings and his wife...I thank God every day for people like him who made it possible for us to b free even today..❤
SEMPER FI, God bless you Marine. Fascinating man.

Do you not speak English? I'm kinda hard of hearing; Still can understand this fellow just fine. Men like him are the reason we are still here and speaking our language today
I guess Americans and everyone else aren't worth it huh...
Count your blessings!
