    After watching this video I made my own carrot seed tapes. In the middle of each tape I added one flower seed to encourage pollinators. Either a calendula, cosmos or a marigold.

    Good idea...in my zone though carrots are grown in the fall, so the flowers wouldn't have enough time to germinate and flower-especially marigolds and calendula.

    Just a thought for folks, if you had done three rows on the same one side of two ply and then put the second side back down you would be done with three rows. Maybe I am over simplifying it? It works out perfectly, my TP is 4.25" and carrots only need 2" on center spacing so one row near each edge and one in the center..

    @@Tinyteacher1111 I think I understand your question but not positive. Think of it like two pieces of bread and the seeds are in the middle. I hope that clears it up 🤣sometimes it's very confusing and backwards until I try things and then it's awe that wasn't so hard. If I still didn't make myself clear feel free to ask. Also, so many gardeners look at the old fashioned way of spacing. Unless you are doing old fashioned way of farming rows, the spacing can typically be 1/4 of what the directions say with a few exceptions. I used the square foot garden method. That is what my mother started in the 80s so that is how I learned. Keep watching, I have done flower and veggie garden for 30 years and I have learned a ton from these gardening shows.

    @@Tinyteacher1111 We all see things in our minds differently so I completely understand. I used store-bought seed tape this year & I wouldn't do it again, there were so many seeds that I had to thin a lot once the plants popped. I don't have a problem spacing my carrots 🥕 so I’d rather take the time to space them & pull a few extras over feeling like I murdered 100 carrots. 🤣

    If you put down one ply of the TP, apply paste dots in two rows, seed it, put the top ply on offset by half a sheet lengthwise and let it dry before splitting, it doesn't want to tear apart at the perforations so easily. Then roll it up. Thanks Luke for doing this.

    Hi, I was reading through the comments and a lot of people asked about the glue making the seeds germinate. It won't , they don't stay wet long enough, as you only use the smallest amount of the glue. Also the TP will absorb the moisture (which is why the paper sticks together ). Hope this helps. Have a peaceful day. Everyone 😊

I’m actually slightly disappointed that it does cause the seeds to germinate - was thinking I could get lots of flowers like lobelia to germinate in the warmth of the kitchen without taking up any space and then move them to a cold greenhouse. Thanks. Your comment saved me trying it out 😁

I think the only differences are that I spread the seeds on a white plate and put one seed on one dob with my fingers and end up using a kid's paintbrush to put the glue on. And I like marking them with washable marker on the end so I don't forget what I have where. Right now they are drying on hangers in my closet, lol. Another great tip. I was originally going to comment that my 50-foot rows probably wouldn't be compatible with this idea, but the more that I think about it I'm not so sure that's true. It would take many four-foot chunks (I'd probably go 5, so it rounded out nicely), but I think it could work just as well for big gardeners as for it would for anyone. I have an Earthway seeder that was given to my grandfather years ago, but to my knowledge it has never been used. I certainly haven't used it. I've always just seeded by hand (painstakingly slowly because, like you said, it's easy to waste seeds - and I'm not a seed waster!), but this would allow me to do the slow part while there's still snow on the ground. And - bonus - do it standing up! That would mean that come spring it would simply be a matter of laying out the seed tape on the rows and I'd be off to the races. Okay, now I think I've found a winter chore... at least a trial with some carrots and radishes. Thanks, Luke!

    Terry McGinn this is actually one of the best things for market gardeners like yourself. The spacing is perfect, and you have maximum control, and maximum return on the space you use. I would suggest this for absolutely anyone, and I just chose 4 feet because it is manageable, and compatible with almost every garden bed. Plus it can be cut to size if it is too big. Definitely give this a try.

    @@MIgardener You could make a radishes-beets-carrots-leek/onion tape, right? They could be spaced superintensively. And the radishes will come out in time to give space for the beets, which will come out in time to give space for the carrots, which will come out in time to give space for the leaks or onions. I think. If it worked, and someone made a seed tape product like this for a reasonable price, then everyone could be a bio-intensive fall gardening genius, maybe.

    Try seed tape! I am a retired horticulturalist and professional chef. I was a passionate gardener throughout my youth and middle age, but it is now really difficult to make the effort required to be successful. I gave up my ornamental garden first, and content myself with growing some very nice specimens in pots on my deck. However, I am going to hold on to my vegetable garden to the last gasp. And sowing seed is one of the most tedious challenges possible for someone whose hands may shake and who can barely bend over. It's challenging and tedious for anyone of any age! For gosh sake, give it a try. It's not a perfect solution, but for sure it improves on not growing at all.

    One of those things everyone tries once. If the glue is too wet or the blob is too big, small seeds will absorb the water, start to swell then dry out and die. If the glue is a bit too stiff, the seeds fall off when the glue dries. Im always interested to see if you're still doing this five years later

    Probably won't catch this comment, however, I'm curious as to the longevity of storing a seed in the natural paste. If kept in the same conditions as the seeds, (cool, dark, dry), will the seeds keep similar viability rates over a few seasons? i mean, i know viability goes down over time, but does the paste have an effect? Thanks mate. Love the material. making a run thru your archive now :D

    once perfectly dry, labeled and rolled, i put mines with a desiccante bag ( the ones you find in shoes boxes) into a paper bag then in a hermetic food jar. Exactly the same way i store my regular seed bags. on mai 2022, i planted dill and carrot seed tapes i made on feb 2021 and they all grew perfectly.

    Edit: to maximize the chances, boil the mix and let it cool with a lid And dont play with seeds in your garage where you used to manipulate paint, glues and all type of chemicals... A clean place is a must.

    I would recommend that it be distilled water you use, because both "tap" and "bottled" water have so many chemicals added into them that using them may kill or stunt half the seeds your trying to grow.

    Hi Luke from Qld, Australia. Thank you for your great idea using the toilet roll! 😊Can this be done with tiny flower seeds that need to go in the fridge for cold stratification and germination? If so, should I keep the seeds in the paper roll or leave the paper lying flat in lengths that fit in the fridge?

    Becky Gardner I just put them in a zip lock baggie, and that way I can keep them dry, then I just move them to a cool location like a basement, and make sure they are out of the light.

    Luke, do you need to plant them shortly after making the tape because of the fact that the seeds have been moistened? It makes more sense to me to use the glue to make sealed pockets around the seed, rather than putting the seeds in the glue. Agree? Disagree?

  • @MIgardener

    @MIgardener

    9 жыл бұрын

    Amy Sampson I mean nothing by the fact that I disagree. Seeds need continued moisture to sprout, and the seed becomes embedded in the glue to not move around. It also dries in a matter of minutes. If you put them in a well ventilated area, or even in the sunlight, the seed tape will dry LONG before the seed has any chance to absorb enough moisture to sprout. I also wait till the tape is completely dry before rolling them up. but excellent question :) I have had it a couple times so you are not alone!

    We have family members who are allergic to gluten to the point that they can't even touch the stuff. Do you think corn starch would be a workable substitute for the flour?

  • @Sandrainia3

    @Sandrainia3

    7 жыл бұрын

    I would go with a mix of 1/3 each : water, corn syrup, and rice flour. Gluten is made by mixing water with wheat flour only, and there is a lab test to diagnose a true gluten allergy being present. Before you jump onto the gluten-free band wagon get a full allergies testing done by a board certified Allergist.

    I use a tooth pick and elmers school glue. Works perfect. Just scoop up a tiny drop on the tooth pick, pick up one seed with the tooth pick and smear it on the toilet paper. It works perfect, you would use less than a half teaspoon for a 4 foot tape like this.
