See what turned up in the electroshock fish survey on the Provo River

Спорт

We spend a day helping out the Utah DWR with their fish sampling/survery of the middle Provo River in Utah. See what's involved with this great little project.

Are you going to start selling these electro-doohickies in the shop? Seems even more effective than euronymphing!

This was the middle Provo below the dam. No huge surprises but it was great to see a very healthy fish population. No huge beast browns but a few 20" to 21" fish.

Would have been super interesting to send Lance through that section of the river first, and see what proportion of the fish population he actually caught.

Doing this is a dream of mine! How do I get the chance? How big was the biggest? Any unusual/rare species?

Some research agencies are open to collaborating with local TU chapters and other volunteer situations. Call your local biologist.

Trying to understand the logic in your timing on this event. . Zapping brown trout during the spawn while a dozen dudes are tromping on REDs a good plan?

Probably the dumbest comment you'll find on here, but, uh....can you feel the electricity, even a bit...tingly bit? (EDIT: just to cement in my dumbest comment - how many "these nets are set to STUN" jokes were there? Lots? Some? People can like Star Trek and Fly fishing too...right?)

You don't feel anything unless you touch one of the grounding cables coming off the boat or touch one of the electro-nets. :)

You're probably reading more into it. We just find that almost every video where a fish is shown, we'll get some numbskull spouting off about proper handling techniques. This survey dispels a lot of that garbage so we just mention it. No whining at all...lol...just having fun with the fish handling experts that like to criticize people online...

Not looking at the fish handling , but this is in the fall and brown trout dig reds and spawn in the fall. Add a few dozen dudes tromping on reds.

Cant really say what the mortality rate was by releasing a live fish... I would understand this if it was for improving fish feeding environments or to recognize water issue problems with contaminants. But the guy said it was for the fisherman understanding what they are eating so we can catch more?? Sorry but that's not that important to me in the long run. And if you are using this info to decide whether to stock fish. Shame on you....

This was organized by biologists from the Utah DWR. They haven’t stocked that river for many many years.
