See the True Cost of Your Cheap Chicken | NYT Opinion

This is part two in “We’re Cooked,” a three-part series from NYT Opinion. Watch part one here: • Meet the People Gettin...
The titans of the U.S. chicken industry want you to view their sector as a great American success story. In just a few decades, they will tell you, the industry has evolved from a fragmented, homespun business to a well-oiled engine of efficiency that produces wholesome, nutritious products at increasingly affordable prices. Chicken, they will point out, is now the most popular meat in the country.
But as the Opinion Video above reveals, these gains have come at extraordinary cost to the chickens themselves - and to the farmers who are contracted to raise them by the huge chicken corporations that now dominate the sector.
In the video, activists from the nonprofit group Mercy for Animals take us behind the industry’s closed doors, to a place that the chicken barons wish you never saw: the inside of an industrial chicken farm. The footage, supplied by Mercy for Animals, shows you how the system inflicts unimaginable cruelty on the animals, which are bred to grow really big, really fast, exposing many to injury, heart attacks, disease and death. More than 90 percent of chickens raised for food in the United States are grown by farmers working under contract with large poultry producers. We also introduce you to a chicken farmer who describes the strict terms under which he and others are contracted to produce poultry for the big companies that control the industry.
Yet there is hope in sight, for the chickens, at least. Popeyes, Subway, Burger King and around 200 other food companies have signed onto the Better Chicken Commitment, obliging their suppliers to adhere to a raised set of standards for chicken welfare. Perdue Foods, one of the largest poultry companies in the United States, began an animal welfare initiative four years ago - which includes improved living conditions for chickens - and has continued to lead the way in producing affordable chicken more humanely. Although these changes are a work in progress, their efforts show it’s possible for large-scale producers to incorporate more humane standards, and other producers should take note.
This is the second in a series of three videos we are releasing this month that explore some of the harms of the global food system and the urgent need to address them. The first, published last week, examined how the powerful American agriculture lobby has fended off environmental regulation, despite the harm done by the sector.
We hope that each video, in a different way, challenges you to weigh your dietary choices, with ethics, politics and the environment in mind.

This nation has a 'cheap food' policy designed to keep the population fat and happy. It began in the 1970's, ostensibly as a method of 'modernizing' agriculture, with that actually meaning the industrialization of production. It has destroyed rural community and family life, poisoned the environment, and produced an agriculture where over 90% of actual output has been corporatized. It was so successful, that the next sector to meet the same fate was organized industrial labor, leading on to our present day, where nearly ALL wealth and power has accrued to a select and self-sustaining few. It's all related- the cruelty to animals AND people, the destruction of land, lives, and livelihood, and WHEN do we make it end? Government policies created this; tax and monetary policies along with deregulation, and government policy can end it. WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT, and we need to bring it back under our control in order to turn this around- it can be done.

I think we've known for a while that the farmers in this equation are getting screwed. They often get overcome with debt to the corporations and it's like extortion or some other form of legal RICO. it's destroyed many good people. Most of those farmers are barely making a living. The corporations? Well, it's the US and these are large corporations with billions in annual revenue. Their executives aren't making $150k/yr. They're making millions. The decision makers are making millions by making the decisions that take advantage of regular folk, take advantage of govt programs, and that weasle out of paying anything to anyone. I worked as an ag engineer for a few yrs. Like most of American industries now, there are small and enormous players. The enormous players were often small once, but that was 50 yrs ago. They plead poverty now bc their books show them only making $30k or $40k last year, but they have $2 million in dairy cows and same in land and same in equipment. Sure the bank owns mroe than half, but it's agriculture, so it's INTEREST FREE loans. So that poor farmer that's milking 3000 to 6000 cows, he's worth a few million. Sure, he "only" made $40k last year as his pay. But his farm is worth millions and it's owned by only a few people,

In some sick way I am glad these poor birds only live 8 weeks max. I accidentally got 2 in a mix. They grew so fast.. faster than the other chicks... my chickens never got as big as my accidental meat chickens.. never. One of my meat chickens made it 6 weeks before its leg broke under its heavy weight.. I tried to raise them to grow slowly... not possible. NOT POSSIBLE. We had to behead my chicken. I sobbed so much. My other meat chicken couldn't roost like the others. Some creature (probably a raccoon) got the door slightly open and my meat chicken was a sitting duck. It's head was eaten off... and the body left behind. It was such a shock to me.. how insatiable they are.. how fast they grow.. their deaths.. it hurt to see just two. I loved my babies. I did everything I could to make their lives good as long as I could...

It’s not a good thing they live such short deaths, they just shouldn’t exist at all to begin with. In most poorer developing countries in Africa and Asia and Latin America, these overgrown Cornish cross chickens actually aren’t even used! They use regular heritage breed type chickens for meat instead, just like back in the old days, it’s only in the greedy and morally deprived developed countries like the USA, China, Europe, Japan, etc. where the huge Cornish crosses are raised. The existence of Cornish Crosses is just wrong, they’re so unnatural, and were created 100% out of greed. The fact that an entire hybrid species was created to live just 6-8 weeks and be eaten is disturbing. At this point those Cornish crosses are so different from the original chickens that they might as well be another species. Also the part you mentioned about the Cornish crosses’ head being eaten off is just horrific, it couldn’t even walk away, so unnatural and sad.

@@ruhfuhquh Many of the animals that are suffering in this video are due to poor implementation of techniques. The air, the burns on the chickens? Result of bad practice from a farmer who probably hasn't changed the bedding for his chickens in some time, leading to it being oversaturated and toxic. The malformed chickens? Yeah, that's called life. In the same video were scores of chickens walking just fine and capable of moving; although, a bit surprising based on how the farmer is mismanaging his chickens. Genetic deformities are an unfortunate reality of evolution, not all mutations are beneficial. Some questions can be raised regarding how the chickens are bred, absolutely, but there will always be losses in farming, just as there are losses in life. It's a game of percentages, which becomes more noticeable due to the sheer volume of animals in one space. By the way, that farmer, he's losing money for every single one of his chickens when they get to the processing plant that has obvious health issues. The USDA will reject them. It's in the farmer's best interest to preserve the health of those birds. His business and income depend on that. Sadly, not every farmer is a good farmer, and while I can't say exactly how this one got his chickens into this state, I imagine it was the result of him cutting corners in his own business. Volume production certainly encourages problems. Chicken and other meat products should probably be 50-100% more expensive if everyone followed best practices. The corporations definitely put undue pressure on the farmers they contract with. However, if anyone is to blame for that, well, the regular culprits are to blame, the large supermarket chains who demand lower prices. Companies such as WalMart, Costco, even Target, are to blame, because they're the ones who are competing with one another trying to sell unsustainably cheap meat products.

Thank you so much for making this video. It brings light to a terribly capitalistic industry. My parents got into this industry, thinking it was a good retirement. They're in enormous mounds of debt, and they can't get out of the business. The distributors won't give chickens to new owners if we choose to sell, so then sellers back out. The smaller farms get less quantity and quality, too, which means less revenue, even if you have the capacity for it. If you "don't produce as much," they'll send less, but you can't make enough money if they send less livestock. Seriously, f*** all the big chicken companies. My family went from lower upper class to working class working for you guys.

The living conditions of the chickens is just the tip of the iceberg. They require massive amounts of food and produce massive amounts of waste. Chicken poo is contributing to a huge pollution problem on some rivers in the UK, with the Wye being particularly badly affected in the last decade or so. Sewage and farming pollution combine to wipe out insect and fish populations, while feeding huge algal blooms that smother all other plant life in the river, along with fish spawning areas; collapsing the rest of the food chain in turn.

Those barns had conveyor belts to bring food to the chickens, and to take the eggs away for processing. The good news is that unlike many current problems, each of us can do something about this one. Boycott meat dairy and eggs. Humans do not need to eat animals or what comes out of them to thrive! The largest organization of nutrition professionals officially said so- "It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage. Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity. Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. I have come to realize that eating animal based food is an addiction. You are raised into it with family and cultural traditions, the famous grand ma recipe that bring such warm memories. You become addicted to the taste, the texture. That's why it is so hard to get out of it even if your brain and reasons tells you it is so wrong for your health, the planet and the animals who suffers. Realistically we know that most of the dairy and meat is the product of extraordinary cruelty designed by people to maximize revenue. It also generate horrendous jobs. These business need to convert fast. And consumers too (we can drive the change). Last - but not least - the government needs to stop the ridiculously high subsidies that support meat and dairy but put any plant and vegetable diet at a great disadvantage because consumer pay so much for vegetables. Send the dollars to veggie and fruit farmers!

And chicken parts, like legs, breasts, etc., are allowed to be packaged after being taken from chickens with huge tumors and sores on other parts of their bodies. Sore and tumors are just cut off, and those chicken parts go into making nuggets, tenders, etc. If you can't quit eating this for the chicken's sake, think about not eating it for YOUR sake. Farmers who are only trying to desperately keep their job and lifestyle sustainable. I eat lentils and rice almost everyday because I want to keep my negative impact minimal when it comes to the meat industry. I don't blame people if they support the industry indirectly, but the fact that farms can't show the truth behind their produce is absolutely disgusting. People want to know what they're eating. Powerfully personal, provoking and worth sharing! This type of inhumane treatment, antibiotics, and use of genetically modified, resource-heavy animal feed are the main reasons that I gradually stopped eating chicken and other farm animals over 10 years ago. Aside from a few times in the first year or two, I've NEVER missed chicken or other meat. If I were ever to eat it again, I'd make sure it's organic and free-range. It seems to me that the main reasons people crave chicken are not so much the chicken itself -- but rather the fat, salt and seasonings added to most chicken-based foods. Chicken eaters also like to claim that it's a "healthy" source of protein. The good news is, we can easily get those same flavors and protein amounts in plant-based products if you like them, or by cooking at home with high-protein whole foods, salts and spices. 😃
