Sections 1 and 2: Bethel Ridge, Mt. Adams, Bridge of the Gods. Washington BDR on a Norden 901, Day 5
After five days and six nights of riding and camping and the loss of four out of our six original riders, the end of the Washington BDR is finally near. In this final installment of the WABDR video series, Tim and I finish WABDR section 2 and jump immediately into WABDR section 1. Our Washington Backcountry Discovery Route journey started in Canada, and today we reach the Bridge of the Gods and the Oregon Border.
We started our BDR Adventure this morning by waking up atop Bethel Ridge on Washington BDR section 2. After descending the ridge, skirting the edge of Rim Rock Reservoir, and gassing up in Packwood Washington, we turned off the pavement onto Washington BDR section 1, the last and easiest section of the WABDR. This WABDR section 1 is mostly fast gravel, with a few cool highlights like Mt. Adams, Takhlakh Lake, ice caves, natural bridges, and the like.
After a long day of Husqvarna Norden 901 off road riding and covering a ton of miles, we finally reached our destination: The Bridge of the Gods and the end of the Washington BDR.

I just watched your entire series of the WABDR, and I really enjoyed it. Last year I rode part of the Kentucky Adventure Trail (KAT) on my XR650L, and I learned the same lesson that you did on your trip. Heavy bikes and technical trails are best left to advanced level riders who are in pretty good shape. I packed light for the KAT, and I would estimate the bike and gear were at about 365lbs. The fire roads and double track were fun and easy, but I had a very hard time on the tight technical single track. I dropped the bike several times. We were riding up steep muddy and rutted trails with lots of rocks. It wore me out. I can't imagine trying technical trails on a big ADV bike. I actually have a 2016 CB500X with only 1500 miles on it. I got a great deal on it when I found it a couple years ago, but I have never taken it off road. I don't think I ever will either. It has a wet weight of 430lbs which is close to the Norden's weight. After the KAT experience, I made the decision to sell it. Unfortunately I also bought the expensive Rally Raid kit for it, but I never installed it. I lost the desire after getting my butt handed to me on that trip. I know there are a lot of guys who will say I just need to practice more and suck it up, but in my opinion, why should I ride something that I don't enjoy. I learned awhile ago that I need to keep myself safe and happy and not cater to popular opinion. I have nothing to prove. I consider myself a fairly experienced intermediate level rider. I'm 56 and I've been riding since I was 13, but I don't do it enough to be a great rider, and I'm not getting any younger. I'm planning on riding the MABDR and NEBDR next year, and I may take the XR650L, but I'm also seriously considering riding my street legal (with electric start) XR400. I have no intention of riding on the freeway. Thanks again for posting the videos and for reading this.

always a compromise , building the 1 bike to do it all has always been my aim but facts are the 2 bike solution , or more , is likely the best choice
Binged the entire WABDR series today, congrats on completing your first BDR! You are very confidence inspiring 👍
The disappointment in your voice when you said "Well, Tim never crashes when I'm filming; or at all" cracked me up and speaks toward the level of friendship. We only have those darker jokes with good friends.
Awesome job Ben, well done and thanks for sharing. I enjoyed coming along for the ride, great company!
Love your videos. As a new adventure bike rider I appreciate the insight from your experiences as I learn to explore what's possible, and how to stay safe . Best- Raahn
We stopped at that Same waypoint that was nothing more than a gravel pit. Lol. We rode it from south to north, so it was interesting seeing it in reverse and recognizing the different views.
Well Done. Very enjoyable watching and easy to relate to.
*_What a great Ride. Thanks for taking us along. Congrats on your first BDR._*
Congrats, what a great adventure!
Great vid series and congrats on finishing the trip! Hitting some of those routes on a lighter dual sport would be a BLAST bet.
Dork n Tim - thanks for sharing the ride - I now know more on what I need to ready myself for the WABDR - congrats on your journey quest!
Congratulations! What an incredible trip. Thank you so much for taking us along with you.
That was great to see the sections in reverse as i do remember doing it with Mototrek and Brett Tacs in 2018 where i learned to ride off road on my big beemer. Its a memory i will never forget.
Great job. I enjoyed the trip very much.
Congrats on the longer adventure Ben. These gradual steps are a great example of this addicting sport, that turns into a lifestyle. Each one preparing for the next🙌Awesome scenery 🤜
Holy cow, that was awesome! I haven't truly been camping in 25 or so years! Maybe if I had the gear you have, I'd make it through a BDR. I don't know that I want to put an entire BDR on my bucket list, but definitely a few sections! Looking forward to more camping trips with Chewy! I need to catch up on some of your videos, but hopefully you found some new camp sites devoid of obnoxious, noisy Ewoks.😆
My son and I just finished the WABDR this last week. We rode a 2016 GSA1200 and a 2021 GSA1250. It's a tough one and the whoops/washouts on the big bikes were unreal on sect 3. My son only had a couple of weeks practice on the bike and weighing in wet at 145 lbs he did an amazing job! Try the IDBDR much easier and in my opinion much better. Less traffic and smaller towns.
This was a really cool series of videos. Congrats on making it through. I am interested in hearing how this experience has or hasn’t impacted your thoughts on adventure riding, your bikes, BDRs, and bike choice in general, etc.
Looking forward to a report on how the Norden performed and if a decision on which bike stays around has been made. I rode the first two sections on a 2019 690 Enduro - trip was cut short as one of our riders was injured. The 690 seemed like the perfect setup for the BDR and my skill level.
Way to keep going and make the experiences and memories. Great videos too. Ya'll can call me a puss all day but strictly in my opinion, a 250 lb to 350 lb bike is plenty for the BDR's. Not as good on the highways, true, but easier off road if you pack correctly, I mean light enough.
I really had fun watching this, now do it again on a klr.
Congratulations on finishing, thanks for sharing the adventure with us, you did good
Great ride and adventure, thank you for the content, enjoy your new house!
Congrats on the accomplishment. Hoping for speedy recovery for the first gent who broke the leg.
Fun series. I will say you made the tough parts look easy. Great job
Hell yeah looks like fun! Congrats!
I like your stick-to-it-ness
You made it, congrats!! Very fun trip to watch. Next time, more solo bike dumps and 1+ hour struggles getting it back up and less broken bones!

Congrats Dork and Tim
Talk about an amazing view to wake up to! Awesome campsite!
Wow, great finish to the WABDR! Congrats, Ben!
Congrtas on completing the WABDR and on a big bike. Nice Job!
That place is absolutely beautiful!
Very nice series! I'm not even a motor bike rider :)
I have to admit that is a damn nice campsite/view.
Thanks for this. So nice. Sorry about your friend's broken leg, of course, but thanks for the experience.
Congratulations 🎉👊 that was an epic series and such an inspiration thank you and they guys who were involved just awesome brother 👊

Well done, touché. You started strong, and you finished well. Overall great video documentary. Happy for you. Goes to show you as you said big bikes off-road maybe maybe not. 650 mL is always my choice of bike when doing any off-road adventures. Again well done. Looking forward to much more video content.
Back in mid June one of those logs on section 1 was all the way across the road. Came around a corner and had to hop it with no prep. Lots of fun but nothing too crazy on 1 and 2.
that bridge is a trip ! i wound up doing parts of sections 4 & 5 yesterday had late lunch in Conconully and highway droned it back home , first ride with my new Tractive suspension Magura hydro clutch Yacugar steering damper and Tusk Olympus bags on my 901,,,,, wow didnt have any help to set the sag up proper yet so guessing at the preload settings and still the difference is instantly recognizable , way more stable and no bottoming out which i did regular like prior
Congratulations on your accomplishment.

Well done mate 👍
Not sure if you were "hanging" your stuff to keep it away from bears but just FYI: 1) They can stand on their back legs and their fronts will be over 6 feet up. 2) Regardless of #1, they can climb trees! :)

I was mostly just trying to get it away from where I was sleeping
The TNG "and now the conclusion" gets me every time. "Find the mind-blowing camp site" on Google Earth is now an Easter egg hunt when I'm stuck inside.
Did to OR BDR on a KTM 450 EXC. Perfect tool for the job though Itchy Boots maybe on to something with her 300.
If you like riding the bigger bike on long rides. Should do Idaho BDR. Tons of big bikes. Super easy. Yes i ride it on a drz, only cause thats all i have. Would love to ride it on a bigger bike.
Great vid series, hope u do some more content with the t7 later. Thanks! / Erik 🇸🇪
How did you resist the urge to honk in the tunnel😆 I always have to honk🤣🤣
So awesome!

Congrats. On completing the WABDR. You need to give serious thought on doing the TAT.
Now you have to do the wabdr comparison on the Yamaha tenere. 😄🙃🤪. Would you ride it on your drz?
BOG is extra pucker on a scooter 😳
Man I'm very envious of your BDR! The Trans Euro Trail (TET, the European equivalent) doesn't have such open large roads and huge sceneries, it's much more technical so less fun for riders like me that just want to leave asphalt without hitting heavy rocks.
Awesome series, so whats next :)
Congratulations! Great content! I agree with the others, now do the Tenere ;-)

Congratulations on completing the WABDR! This kind of content, although I can see it might not be super interesting for US and Canadian viewers, is super interesting for us foreign viewers. I had no idea what a BDR even was before finding your wabdr playlist. Thank you so much for sharing this, I had a blast watching every episode. Subscribed and will watch the other content on your channel. Quick question: what bike was Tim riding? Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
You will be fine doing more on the big bikes, give yourself more credit.. Idaho is an easier bdr, more fast roads, perfect for your big bikes
You found my shooting range.
Do you remember the woodpecker and the moose cartoon fighting for food.? Might have been a wolf?
Was hoping to get out on BDRNE this season but fucked up my shoulder on the road testing out a new fan… fucking goon I am
Tim is awesome, does he have a channel?
This is the first BDR trip I’ve watched that didn’t report a tire failure. Maybe going N to S is easier on tires? Thoughts?
Great ride, u mentioned using a smaller bike for some portions. What bike would u pick? I know u have a beta? However, pick any smaller dual bike. Thanks
Thanks for video series. I enjoyed watching series! What are your pro’s and con’s of Norden 901 after trip? Any concerns with it? Finally would you pick it over 890 R after this trip?
Excellent adventure! What type of gps unit are you using in these videos? Thank you!
I have enjoyed you series of the WABDR! I will be attempting Section 2 from Hause Campground to Nile for a short trip this Coming Friday on my 2017 BMW R1200 GSA. What are your thoughts on The section noted?
Thanks for the entire WABDR series! Would you consider the WABDR on a RE Himalayan?

Absolutely
Inspiring! I need to get more time in the saddle so I can do a trip like that! Is there a riding school to help get noobs up to speed quicker?
Does a cylindrical cone of a mountain have a back or a front? I would consult the owl, but I hear he’s still trying to work out the lollipop question……
So what's your ideal bike for BDRs? Small enough to take on the technical stuff but big enough to carry your gear. Also, what about doing the BDRs but doing the bypasses? Still a no-go for a big bike?
Did you say "i got a full on pogo" on that road jump? lmfao
What size bike would you prefer to ride the BDR? You mention not on another big bike?
hell yeah! nice work. is that bridge by Astoria? I think I've been on it before in a car.
