Secrets Revealed: Reactive Red-Setter Dog Training Session

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Roxy is a beautiful Red Setter. She is very reactive to other dogs, and she's not great on the lead. This is STEP ONE of almost all of our reactivity cases, we get the dog to understand leash/lead pressure and work on handler engagement/handling skills. Without these fundamentals in place, we can't expect to succeed around other dogs! While Roxy is not aggressive to other dogs, she is extremely over-stimulated around them so this session will help bring that down massively!

You can actually pre-load the marker before hand. like when with a pappy you say "yes" wait 1-2 seconds and deliver the treat. Enough repetitions it should predict the outcome. You can also bridge that with with eye contact, by putting hands out to the side and mark/reward for eye contact. I see that to many ppl in the beginning are having a hard time doing 2-3 steps at the time. so break it down to 1 -> 2 -> 3 and then like dancing in their head repeat 1-2-3 :)

Yep, the family didn’t load the marker beforehand so it wasn’t quite as sharp as I’d like!

This is one of the best leash pressure videos I've ever seen. Part of the barking is their timing - like i think the dog thinks that's what they want me to do. If they could Yes and treat BEFORE the barking starts or wait 3 seconds after the bark before the dog gets the treat, but I understand what you're saying. Question: what if your dog has a collapsing trachea? Don't want to use a slip lead, anything in particular you would recommend using instead, especially if you have a leash reactive dog to people and mostly other dogs?

Thank you! Yeah we’ve begun trying to focus on not rewarding the barking now that her engagement is up and the pressure is understood. The barking is nothing to do with the timing of the marker, she was barking all the time anyway, long before we started this stuff 😅😅

As far as collapsing trachea, I have no idea, I wouldn’t want to advise, may be a bit irresponsible of me to do!

The marker was starting to work in the beginning when you (the trainer) was working her. Now teaching the owners. For me the dogs are a lot easier than the owners. It might be my lack of communication. I am not sure.

Yes, I am quite lucky in that. I’ve always quite enjoyed teaching people, because as you say, that is often much harder than teaching the dog!
