    @@cherb23 NRE is a has-been. Plenty of others do what he does and do it better. NRE was not first, and nor are they winning any races anywhere. And as far as power goes, when was the last time you saw an NRE engine produce the claimed numbers? There's a ton of him dynoing twin turbo motors, and yet they always fall way short of what he claims in the title. Tom always bragged a lot and talked a big game, but like they say, empty cans rattle the most. Today SME made 3080 hp on a 427 on 38 lbs. of boost. Jet boats are hell on motors. I grew up with them and it killed my dad to see me swap to outboard boats. Mainly cause i wanted to run 100 for miles instead of feet. You have worked some magic to run a boosted motor that hard. Lots of guys in that class run turbine motors to handle those long runs. Yall have got this stuff dialed in for sure.

    @jonny j he was saying boosted inboards are not reliable, off shore racing proves they are🤷. I like outboards too now. My dad had a 225 Johnson on a little 18ft laser bass boat with tunnel hull under it. The only thing in the water was the foot and sometimes that back of boat a little. It would run well over a 100 never had it clocked in but he raced Allison craft with a 300 v8 Mercury outboard and beat him bad. He would start out from mill Creek on lake Marion and run to I95 bridge and back total of twelve miles. He would start out with a full 46 gallon tank and be on fumes when he got back. He literally never lost a race with that boat. Although he never raced in any professional races🤔 just long distance straight top speed runs. You could see him all the way to the bridge with rooster tail you could only stop hearing him about a mile from the i95 bridge which is right at six miles from mill creek

    Tom, You are a true inspiration to me! My dad was a motorhead and owned a Mopar dealership back in the late 60s early 70s. Passed his love of muscle cars along to me. I remember buying small 12V electric fans, fabricating a new intake, and installing my new "superchargers" on my 2-stroke dirtbike at age 10. I would mess with the jets, fuel mixture, ALL DAY LONG! I swear it made more horsepower than stock :) I can smell the Turbo Blue now. I love your enthusiasm and extreme level of knowledge. Of all the so-called "big name" builders, there are several points in your video I've never heard ANYONE else mention. Best of all, everything you say is backed up by rigorous testing, and REAL WORLD horsepower numbers, NOT marketing HYPE! Thanks for keeping it real Tom and being a great example of a true American!

    A friends dad (Mr, Daryl Buhel) was a winning Top Fuel engine builder from the beginning & was one of the first to run a all aftermarket engine (by Ed Donovan) ... I learned so much from him & he was spraying the under side of the pistons through rifle drilled connecting rods on a custom Aluminum BBC 540 twin turbo designed for aircraft.... I notice both of you have a "common sense" , no substitution for the proper material.. He smiled as so many in the industry "followed the other guy", and his saying was (NO FAIR THINKING). Doing things because "others do it" will get you where they are. The way you (NRE) approach the build should get you records, & wins if the rest of the build is up to par...

    There's a lot of external load forces being applied to every component of a race boat motor. Take into consideration the slamming the boat gets every time it hits a wave, that transfers into the engine components also, or an over rev condition when the prop comes out of the water. Not like a smooth black top surface. This engine is a masterpiece. Keep us updated as to how it faired out in compitition.

They assumed it was like how guys say they have a stage 2-3 setup these days and I heard them laughing saying how they'll smoke grandpas stage 2 setup from the 90's. I'm only 38 and they were punks with a pos LS turbo thinking they where fast so I didn't feel bad for taking their $1500 worth of lunch money for the year that the 4 of them put up lol. The best part was when they googled Kenny Duttweiler and stage 2 Buick they actually had the balls to try and get their money back because I had a true fully built race motor. If they weren't punks I might've given most of it back, but they needed some schooling ;-) Plus I showed and told them exactly what it was although they didn't notice the AWD ;-) But it's a Sonoma GT on a back halved Olds Bravada frame running a Frankenstein trans out of a Trailblazer SS behind the Stage 2 Buick that Kevin Banks originally built for a Busch series car and Kenny rebuilt and converted to EFI and turbo for me. It's crazy what a new ECU, injectors and tune has done for it though. I haven't changed anything else and the modern Haltec Elite 2500 and E85 has dropped over 2 seconds from my old best time.

    The 520ci Chevy is the go to basis of river racing and river waterski racing here in Australia. Most builds result in 1600 HP but they are built to run four race weekends. A lot are now using Mercury Racing 1350's that come in an engine package and MR do the rebuilds. They are guaranteed at 8000rpm for 20 hours. You have one in the boat and one at MR being rebuilt for $130k. A good twin turbo 520 will run you $80k. These boats are good for 150 mph and 140 with two skiers. They just put a 120mph speed limit on them to give you half a chance to live if you fall off.

    Hell yeah, i'm not a v8 fan, but this is how you build engines!!! I really liked the idea with the groove for the piano wire, don't know why not more companies would do that, the engine from Cleetus had problems with the gasket rings pushing out, so i thought why not make a groove in it?!? It sounds sexy as well! Looked alot like Leroys setup tho lol. Keep it up!!👍👌

    6 cylinder turbo diesel guys have been doing stainless O rings on performance builds for decades now. Its needed when pushing over 50psi of boost and gas engines have just now begun to run these boost levels vs the diesel aftermarket which has been doing it since the 90's

    You see exhaust always burns at around 1,200 degrees F but it's the cool ambient air temperature that keeps pistons from deformation and melting. That's also what an egr valve is for to keep cylinder temperature lower and prevent NOX

  • @G5Hohn

    @G5Hohn

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@kennethrand1032 Exhaust doesn't burn. It is oxygen-deprived and by definition cannot burn. Moreover, the flame temperature is much higher than 1200F. NOx formation *stops* at 1700F as the cylinder cools. EGR raises cylinder temperature but lowers flame temperature. That's one of two ways it reduces NOx. The other is that it displaces oxygen with inert exhaust (CO2 mostly) and slows the oxidation rate (and hence reduces flame temperature).

  • @kennethrand1032

    @@G5Hohn sorry hot exhaust gases forgive my simple text but most people on KZread are not college graduates. I was trying to put it terms the average person would understand. If I said after the combinations of air and fuel enter the cylinder they are ignited in a violent explosion after which the inert exhaust gases could reach temperatures between 1,250-1,780 degrees F. Which causes the formation of an unnatural gas NOX the cool air entering the cylinder and the cooler temperature of the fuel itself keeps the engine from melting down. The EGR valve recirculating inert exhaust gas back into the cylinder not only helps keep cylinder temperature down but reduces the production of NOX. The reduction of cylinder temperature not only increases fuel mileage and efficiency it also helps catalytic converter efficiency keeping the exhaust gases at the proper temperature for the precious metals in the catalytic converter to convert harmful gases into greenhouse gases. Now how many common people who don't do this for a living understand what I'm talking about

    Kenneth Rand The exhaust temperatures are actually between 949.817 kelvins to 1244.261 kelvins and may slump or peak by approximately 45.45774267883257758963 kelvins. The exhaust temperature is always natural and just inherently is predisposed to more than 26 different elements which can and in most cases will effect the level of inert gases that are formed!!! The physics of which are more so on a quantum level. But that is more so for someone in the know and not an average KZreadr such as myself. In saying that... you could say ( in layman terms).. The engine goes quite hard!!!! But not to sure how hard on the Rockwell scale??? Sorry for my ignorance! Is this believable.. because I've had about 10 beers???

    I like the concept, yet the engine seemed to be pulsating, like to see exhaust temperature. The valve size look fairly large for small displacement, unless your running 30lb+ boost. I hate to say this and you might think I am full of $hit yet, being from Vegas I'll bet you when the valves are fully open they don't have enough equal valve spring pressure, and that is causing the fluctuation in the combustion chamber. PS. Even good hardened valve keepers and retainers each have .005"+ or - difference in installed spring height, and that is also 5lbs to 15lbs difference in spring pressure. That is what I would check first.

    I had an idea about turbos maybe you can make one. I was thinking you could split the turbo in half, so that the hot side where the exhaust goes into wouldn't be near the boost side that sends compressed air out into the intake. The two halves could be connected by a long titanium, aluminum or carbon kevlar shaft. Connecting the two impellers. The shaft could be housed in a larger diameter tube, so nothing could get wrapped around the shaft when spinning 80-100 thousand rpms. I think this would drastically lower the boosted air temps since the two enclosed impellers could be seperated about 2ft to 4ft apart. Another idea I had with a V8 engine, would to make a cam or cams (for overhead cam engines) that would fire two pistons at once. Say like the front piston on left side & rear piston on the right side, & the next two to fire would be the next piston down like the 2nd front piston on left side & the 2nd piston from the rear on the right side & so on. If you had 4 bolt main with the big main caps with side bolts, I don't think the crankshaft would flex at all. Another idea could be to make 4 oval pistons like Honda did with a motorcycle engine they created. Each piston would have two connecting rods. Dual spark plugs. Also instead of having race bearings (flat curved pieces of steel with a hole in the center for the pressurized oil for the crank to spin on), put timken split roller needle bearings with a hole in center half of the split bearing housing, so the needle bearings would always have pressurized oil flow through the needles. Roller bearings on the ends of the piston wrist pins, so every spinning metal surface is turning on bearings & pressurized oil. I'm sure the oil pressure could be lower because of the needle bearings, & you would have a better chance of not ruining your engine if you lost oil pressure. I would even put needle bearings on the main journals of the cam if it was a push rod valve engine or the multi cams if it was a SOHC or DOHC V8 engine, I would also always use a roller wheel on the hydraulic or solid lifters so they glide over the cam lobes easier. Anyway these are a few ideas I had in my head floating around. Some have been used already & some haven't. You being an engine builder & designer I thought maybe you would appreciate them. My father was a structural engineer. I'm a retired A&P mechanic. A lot of ideas that go into car technology were first used on aircraft. You have the money, time, experience & machines to create some of these ideas.

    Piston cooling oil jets?! Holy 1980's Saab tech Batman! Just part of the reason i can beat the bag out of my 2.3l 400hp daily driver at the track and always be ready to pick up the kids. Seriously though, you folks are doing the lord's work. Oh yeah, and the sodium filled exhaust valves...and the knock sensing through the resistance in the spark gap...there is still much to learn from Saab.
