I am so relieved you did a longer breakdown of the process. I’ve had my eye on faux limed wood for my armoire for months now. This is extraordinarily helpful. I will be assembling the frame next week. I have BC pine and am rooting for a white/cream heavy glazed look. I’ll keep you posted. ETA: should a stain the wood before final assembly or afterwards? 🤔

I think wheel sanding/texturing would more easily be done before assembly. The finish can be applied after assembly. I look forward to seeing how it turns out. Thank you.

Hello!! This is a dreamy look! I have honey oak cabinets and watched your video many times for two days and begun applying it to my honey oak kitchen!!! Love the results!! Thank you!! I used primer sealer, carbon gray oil stain by general finishes and a poly top coat. And just a wire brush!! 🧡👊

The makita surely looks like a solid tool. It is very pricey ($600!) I went for the craftsman restorer for under $80. Doesn't look as good as the makita but I just hope it gets the job done.Thanks for the demonstration!

Why thank you for those kind words. Very encouraging and keeps me going :)) Yes you can tint glaze to any color. BTW I found a new glaze that I like better than Benjamin Moore. ML Campbell's furniture glaze is a great product and I am switching all my glazing needs to them. It can also be tinted to any desired color. Keep up the good work!

Thank you Marilyn...unfortunately the wheel sander would be very difficult on existing pieces as it would not reach into profiles. Perhaps using it on flat surfaces with a hand wire brush for the profiles might solve the problem.

Great video, one thing I’ve had trouble with is getting a completely clean surface afterwards. 2 coats black sealer, let dry for an hour White glaze applied like video Wiping off right away Sanding after a few hours Black looks bluish like the glaze mixed with the black? One thing further is the black vinyl sealer is pretty flat sheen when dried. Not very slick..should I thin substantially with LT to get a different sheen? It’s basically hard to remove the glaze from the base coat color. Not just wipe and soft sand. Thanks for the video!

Anthony...sounds like you are doing the process correctly. I am not sure where you are getting the bluish color from if your base coat is pure black, the glaze shouldn't make a difference. The sheen should come from the clear top coat which is the final step. Maybe give it another test...hope that works. Thanks. Wes

So I'm definitely going to try out this process on a guitar body made of ash. As you've pointed out on other related videos, Ash is another good candidate to do this process. What I'm wondering for myself is after applying the white paint you state that the paint you use has a sealer in which is necessary before applying the glaze. I only use basic acrylic craft paint when doing my work so I'm wondering what type of sealer I would want to use in my process before applying the black glaze? I'm really looking forward to this project! Thanks for the inspiration!

I am not familiar with acrylic paints and their sealing properties. It might not be necessary to seal between paint and glaze. Give it a test try, if a sealer coat is necessary consult with your paint supplier for a clear sealer product for your paint. Good luck, thanks Wes

Hi. Love your channel!! I wish I would have found this sooner. We painted our oak uppers white and distressed them a bit. I'm happy but I can see this in the future. However we left the lowers natural. We have alot of oak in our home (we love oak!)... and I'm thinking of black for the lowers. Have you done a black or white ceruse with a natural or brown finish coming thru to highlight the grain? Is that possible? Thanks!!

Hello Wes! I’m hoping you can answer an important question for me. You hv inspired me to redo a table with the ceruse finish. I hv stripped, and used laquer thinner to remove all leftover old laquer and stripper. Lightly sanded, and grooved with wire brush. I am on pause till I figure out if it’s ok just to start ceruse finish and paint or do I need to eliminate and laquer thinner residue first so that paint adheres? I know it evaporates quickly, but ????? Found conflicting info, so I’ll bet my last dollar your the pro with the answer! Thanks!!

Hello Wes, I am wondering if this technique would work with just one colour? I'm hoping to achieve the same affect you did, but instead of a white base, I would like the original wood to be visible. i love this finish, i was going to do a “whitewash sand away finish” on my kitchen cabinets but it’s way too labor intensive, this will save so much time over that technique! quick question- what wheel grit and sanding sponge grit did you use?

Hi Bryan...the wheel doesn't have a grit, it's just a nylon wheel. The sanding sponge comes in extra course, course and fine and I use the fine grit. I get them at Sherwin Williams. Thank you...happy you found this video useful.

actually the wheel does come in multiple grits, the 9741 (according to Makita’s website), comes with a 100 grit wheel, but 80 and 240 are available as well, so assuming you used the (100 grit) wheel it came with. thank you. www.makitatools.com/products/details/9741

I've been searching for a way to make woodgrain show up with a dark (Spanish Oak) stain on my banisters with white painted spindles. Can I use oil-based stain as the sealer on the banisters or does it have to be a vinyl primer for this to work?

This may be a novice question- but would you advise making up stock with this finish before assembling cabinet frames? I'm interested in using this in surrounds with solid color panels. It might be harder to get the evenly hand rubbed finish after assembly.

Hi David...the top coat lacquer that I use is not an exterior finish. Check your finish supplier for a quality exterior finish...maybe a spar varnish or something similar. Glad you found the channel and enjoyed the video. Thank you.

Until being able to afford a wheel sander could you get the same affect using a higher grit sandpaper to bring out the grain of the wood?

Sandpaper would probably not give the same effect. You need those bristles to dig deeper into the soft grain than the hard grain, which is what gives the board the texture. Flat sandpaper moving across the face of the board would not do this, most likely. A wire wheel on a drill or angle grinder would do the trick, though.

I would suggest a time and material format. This tends to be a labor intensive process and you will want to price accordingly. With practice, of course, you will become faster. What is the mix ratio that you tell them. The Benjamin Moore by me has never heard of tinting glaze

Hi...the sanding sponge was purchased at Sherwin Williams, extra fine grit. I now use M.L. Campbell furniture glaze for all my work. I used a black glaze in the video . The clear top coat was just a pre-cat lacquer. Thank you for watching...glad it was helpful. Wes

I have never used a water based primer and so, again, I would not be able to advise. Have you checked M.L. Campbell website for product availability and for the distributor closest to you? I noticed when you describe your paint, you call it "tinted vinyl sealer", but the can doesn't say "sealer" as far as I can see. How can I tell that whatever paint I buy is a sealer?

Most primers ARE sealers and that is just the way I described it in the video. You might want to check with your paint supplier to be sure. Thank you, I appreciate your visit.

Oh man, I must've not used the correct product because my project didn't look anything like this when I was done. Lowes doesn't have these products so I improvised with what I thought were comparables. It's not a big deal since I used a piece of scrap wood to test. Still a bummer.

Hello where can I buy the procducts that you used

Well this question will show my green ears for these types of things but here goes: how do you tell it’s oak, ash, alder? I believe I know what red cherry (if that’s a type) but also pine and Mahogany too. I’ve never seen Purple Heart in person but I’ve heard it’s the most expensive and literally unobtainable, but then I saw someone “fake” it with Unicorn Spit in color Purple Hill Majesty (there’s a question somewhere on it’s way about that type of gel glaze...lol) and it was a really good faux finish! But I don’t know why I wanted this but my hubby got me like 6 bottles and the last thing I want to put it on is only my teal pieces of wood furniture. But I love this technique you did I watched the first video and just saved it bc I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to to do it because you lost me around the part when it was painted with the colored gel stain then sprayed then coated and then I understand (most of them) the terms but I don’t understand why you would do that and then sand it and repeat. But it really doesn’t matter why bcuz the outcome is so I mean SO beautiful. To me, it almost looks metallic. That is something I would definitely do on my kitchen cabinets whatever kind of wood they are. Thank you for breaking this down.

Hi Alli...wood identification is confusing to start but the more time you spend in projects, the easier it will become. Do like I did to start and ask someone at the lumber yard to help you. I hope this 2nd video explains the process better. Practice on some scrap pieces until you get your desired results before you begin your kitchen cabinets. Good luck in your quest and thank you !!

So do I have the process correct? 1) Sand with 120 Grit 2) Use wire wheel to open the grain 3) Would it help to use a wood conditioner prior to using the Primer/Sealer? 4) How long should you let the primer/sealer dry prior to applying the Glaze? 5) Apply Glaze by brush and then use fine sanding sponge to push the glaze into the grain better; wait 10 minutes then wipe down with a clean cloth 6) Apply one coat of lacquer, or should you apply two coats for a stair tread? Hi...the black I use is ML Campbell primer undercoat .The number on the can is B115749. It also says on the can the name Magna Claw. Hope this helps...thanks for watching.

I forgot to sand before glazing?? How to fix please

Do you think that I could do the hallway on my second floor that is red oak and the hand railing which is also oak to look pretty similar to each other? They are both 30 plus years of golden oak stain. Would I just use the machine that you use from the start or should I sand it all down to start? What color combo did you do where the main part is black and the top is white or gray? Ty

Hi...no need to strip the finish from your golden oak pieces. I would like to suggest viewing some of our videos on cerusing golden oak doors. On the dark sample I used a black pigmented lacquer and a white glaze to highlight the grain and finished with a clear top coat. Hope this helps. Wes

What type of paint would you suggest that I use for the red oak floors? I’ll be rolling it . I’m watching the cabinet video now. Great videos

What is white vinyl primer? Is that the same as regular primer, or a completely different product?

Vinyl primer is different than an oil or water based primer. Check with your paint supplier and they will be able to help you with your product choice. Thank you for watching...I appreciate the support.

What happens if the wood grain pattern doesn't show up after the first sanding? After the wire brush? Cause I did both and no wood grain pattern. What did I do wrong!

Hi Ilene...first, I need to know what kind of wood you are working with? If it is oak, the grain should show easily with wire brushing. If you can let me know further details on the wood you are using, I will help you the best I can. Thanks.

Could the primer be brushed on if I don’t have a sprayer?

The primer that I use is spray only...I would suggest checking with your paint supplier for a quality primer sealer that could be brushed on. Because I spray only I am not familiar with other options but I am sure they are available. Thanks for watching...hope that helps.

Great Video Wes! I went shopping for Nylon drums as I'm using the Eastwood SCT (surface conditioning tool) and there are nylon drums from 60 grit all the way up to 600 grit with every stepping stone in between. May I ask what grit you are using in your burnishing tool?

The nylon wheel that I am using came with my Makita and I couldn't find an indication of what grit. It is fairly stiff and I would assume 60 or 80 grit (this is just a guess...sorry) Hope this helps...thanks for watching.

We found pine to be less satisfactory than hardwoods with distinctive grain such as oak and ash. I suggest you doing a test and judge the results for yourself. Thank you very much for watching.
