DIY Wood Burning Technique - That's not Shou Sugi Ban! Or is it??

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I use this burnt wood finish technique on most (if not all) of my builds. This is a How To get that burnt wood finish or How To stain wood with fire...and stain! There's always an argument over if this technique is true Shou Sugi Ban or not. So, I'll just call it a Torched Wood Finish!!
I get asked a lot how I achieve this look, so I figured I'd make a video showing my process.

    Sugi (Japanese cypress), the su part is like soo, as opposed to shoe. You'll see this burnt sugi siding on traditional homes because of its excellent resistance to rot. Sugi is a great building material because even prior to burning it resists both pests and water. I've built with both pine and sugi and while pine is a heavier material, it doesn't hold up over time unless pressure treated, when exposed to the elements for years on end. Keep your stick on the ice.

    Hey mate, I've been in the 2pac kitchen/timber refinishing/french polishing industry (mostly as a painter) since I was 16 (now 29) Your burning technique is very good, I just wanted to let you know with the burning then sanding like you do its closer to a "Patina" technique than anything else I believe (burn, sand, stain, sand, seal, sand, top coat would be the 100% correct way but your way is fine. Also patina can of course be done no burning just mixing different stains to create an older look. Its also a technique done on some old school hot rods) Either way, I'd just like to say that you do a top notch job! Keep up the good work!

    You’re welcome! Hard to completely stop cupping, but try to keep the wood damp. It helps! Also (depending on the project) if you can put supports across the back you can keep the surface flatter.

    Will this method work on 2x4x8 fence railings? By work, I mean so the 2x4x8 won't warp. Thank you.

  • @BuildDadBuild

    @BuildDadBuild

    5 жыл бұрын

    I can't guarantee no warping, but I can tell you how to reduce the chance of it happening. 1 - Do shallow passes with the torch. Burn it lightly, let it cool and repeat and 2- Keep the wood damp while you work. Have your garden hose handy with a spray nozzle and hit the fence with it in between passes. 3 - sometimes it's gonna warp no matter what you do. So, maybe pick up a couple of extra pickets and replace any that warp. Hope that helps! Good luck

  • @LitoGeorge

    @LitoGeorge

    Twisting and cupping and such will always happen with wood thats drying out without pressure on it to maintain the straightness. Your answer depends on the age of the wood, the moisture content, how it was cut, what type of wood. Typical big box SPF - yes, its going to "warp"
