Thank you for showing what very few know - that the Overground has its own 'Parliamentary Train' to keep the curve to Battersea Park formally open. One more of these 'ghost train' services to record for history.
I don't think anyone knows more about London than you Geoff!

THANK YOU! This video has just solved a mystery I’ve had for ages about why the late night train runs to Battersea Park instead of Clapham Junction ✊🏾

I know that Geoff included South Acton to Acton Town as a London Overground route, however when the route was on the tube map, it was a District line service and got the nickname the tea run

The only underground station that's is sturly under ground in the waterloo and city line between Waterloo and bank station. A mixture of underground and cut and cover.

Hi Geoff! Always find your videos thoroughly informative and entertaining! Great work!!
If you go to Barking at Night you can see some overground trains departing from Platform 7 or 8 instead of 1

I must have been on that train too, all those years ago, something about a fire at CJ if I remember correctly. I always thought it was weird they had a spare route and station up their sleeve!
Another fascinating upload. Your passion for the subject is infectious.
Part 2 is excellent! I may have to take a few trips on the Overground to see the 'secrets' for myself :-)
Can never get bored of Geoff , Love watching these videos :-)
Your knowledge and research is impeccable. I love your channel and the videos relating to the Underground.
Glorious work Geoff! Once again a great video!
Put simply, I love you videos. Thank you Geoff...
I like it how you draw the line between Clapham Junction & Wandsworth Road, looking like an orange noodle
I thoroughly enjoyed sitting and watching video after video of places I will likely never see yet find fascinating. Thank you for your marvellous obsession with the London Underground.
This is the very definition of a "Parliamentary train", minimally advertised and at inconvenient times. Purely retained for operational reasons...
Really enjoy these videos. Thanks!
Having just done a large portion of Overground i think the rest of London who use the older lines are going to get a little envious. I have to take my hat off to Overground, making the whole Overground network orange on the map was sheer brilliance. I half expected to find some half dead tourist begging for water while he finds his way to the airport. Pure brilliance at its finest. If you ever go for the popes job you'll get my vote in a heartbeat.
I don't live in London but when I do visit I base myself in the Crystal Palace area. Good to see you covering this station.
I love the way Geoff says railway. Raoul-way
At 4:11 the roundel is there because New cross and New Cross Gate date back to the days when the Met ran what used to be the East London Line between Shoreditch and New cross. The East London Line didnt become a line in its own right until 1991, so before that, it was still controlled by the Metropolitan Line. Fun fact: the district line used to run services here.
Balls Pond - literally the pond owned by Mr Ball, and the name given to a road. I kid you not... No longer a pond there, alas. Also made famous by the Islington actor/comedian Kenneth Williams (of 'Carry On' film - and more - fame) as the name of the imaginary 'Balls Pond Theatre' in the 1960's radio comedy seires 'Round the Horne'

Shouldn't it have a possessive apostrophe?
The District Line used to be much bigger. It used to have a branch to Hounslow splitting off from the Ealing Broadway branch, which now part of the Piccadilly Heathrow Branch. Also part of the Ealing Broadway branch was A Rayners Lane branch, also part of the Piccadilly on the Uxbridge Branch. At one point, the Entire cut-and-cover areas were one line.
Great video. Very informative.
You should do a 2-3 minute video on the small branch from Upminster to Romford
will you make videos about the new Overground stations? awesome vid man :)
So, the Overground will have around 113 stations in the future? My gosh, that's so many!
Thank you for this very interesting video about London Overground secrets. Compliment for the professional quality and your very good explanations. 👍👍👍Best Greetings from Germany, and stay healthy. Bye, Günter.
2:55 The best name you could give a station...
Thank-you!
Victoria Park station was on the branch going south from the North London Line where now the A12 runs down to the Blackwall Tunnel. The bridge abutments for the line can still be seen adjacent to where the motorway passes over Wick Lane, just south of Mr Duckett's Canal.
Surrey Canal Road is taking its time.
Sooooooooo interesting can't stop watching and presented by Daniel Craig as well xx
I commute through New Cross daily and have never spotted the roundel - will have a peek the next time I go by!
I have a friend that lives in Crystal Palace and I remember being very taken by the station design when I first saw it.
Excellent - saved.
Interesting video mate I like that
With the new stations it looks like it's time for more Overground secrets, all for those stations only .
The Thames Tunnel Wapping to Rotherhithe is permanently warm and damp and has a resident mosquito breed which is unique. The insect people have given it a Latin name but I can’t recall it. (I know this because I used to maintain the tunnel)
Superb film!
Those stairs at Battersea Park are a killer. They need to refurbish that station.
the overground just makes me tired at night all the time, that's how comfy the seats are
Brilliant video! I'd like to know where the tube map (section of it shown at time index 05:35) came from, as it has TFL Rail in the new Crossrail colour, which as far as I am aware is always represented by two navy blue lines.
Geoff, That Peckham Rye waiting room is now a gallery of old pictures of Peckham. My dad dragged me there! ;D
Marc Brunel’s “sinking shaft in the sky” was a technique previously used on the Paris metro at st.michel and cite metro stations.
I love the ingenuity and practicality of the Victorians and Edwardians. They didn't have much technology but they just did whatever they wanted, and quickly! Entire Paris Metro lines were built in 20 months. Nowadays in the UK, with all the technology available, these projects, if they happen, take 10 years+.
"...And what helped Mr. Brunnell to dig the Thames Tunnel, sure wasn't it whisky from ould Inisowen?"
There are shafts for steam from the trains in the Brunel tunnel that are now used by track workers, also one of the entrances still exists and is bricked up and used for events.
Q:What's the 84th station on the Overground? A:It's Battersea Park.
In the Whitechapel area There is an abandoned station on the district line called St Mary’s . There is also a disused running tunnel connecting St Mary’s to the present overground south of Whitechapel. Very close by is the underground terminus and depot for the Post Office Railway.
You would think Battersea Park Station is the least used station on the Overground as it only has 4 services per day but it's surprisingly not. It's Emerson Park
part of the croydon canal also exists in betts park (close to Selby road), and the feeder lake (for the locks) is now south norwood lake).
Orange is also used on tube maps to indicate ,to travellers, weekend and other planned closures
Many of my local stations in the video, Acton
I’ve watched all your underground and overground video because I really love train on the and I’ve also watched secret of the Glasgow subway and the TfL rail
The line used to go under a ship dock at Wapping. The dock was filled in and the land is now called Wapping Woods
+geofftech Is there a place to get Information as to when there will be tours through the Brunel tunnel (as i guess there won't be at _every_ day when the track is not in use during maintenance works)?

+Kai Michael Poppe Hello Kai! Geoff's out busy on a train somewhere at the moment ... Have a look at the Brunel Museum website, www.brunel-museum.org.uk/ i'm sure they have twitter too!
One question: why does the Highbury & Islington to Battersea Park service not continue just one stop further to London Victoria? Wouldn't that make the service much more useful?
@lewisnagle5839
9 жыл бұрын
***** I don't think it physically can - the Battersea Park platform to which the Overground service runs is a terminating platform. It used to be a through platform, but a few years ago they put buffers there and it no longer allows trains through to Victoria.
@KasabianFan44

Lewis Nagle But I'm quite certain (and Google Maps agrees with me: www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.4769531,-0.1474361,18z) that there are *two* Overground line platforms at Battersea Park, so can't they use the other one?
@KasabianFan44
9 жыл бұрын
***** But London Victoria is a much more commonly-used station than Battersea Park. I know they don't have to but I'm sure that if it continued to Victoria, there would be more passengers using this service, which would give London Overground more money from selling tickets.
@lewisnagle5839
9 жыл бұрын
***** Google Maps there is wrong - the easternmost of those two platforms (plt1) has had its track removed and the other platform (plt2) has been buffered and as such neither run through to Victoria. Additionally, Victoria is a very busy station with services from Southern and Southeastern heading out to various places in the south of England - having this Overground train there will only increase rail traffic and make the operations at Victoria potentially more complicated. Like Geoff said, this train is run for political reasons (hence the term 'parliamentary train') so that Network Rail don't need to close the track and the train is not necessarily for customer use.
@KasabianFan44

Lewis Nagle Alright, that makes sense now :)
Wasn't there once a station called Primrose Hill on these lines, just north of Euston?
It’s been 5 years and new bermondsey has still not open
The station name Wapping didnt age well.
4:35 121 steps, sounds like 15 storeys to me
2:53 So that’s why they’re going to call it the Mildmay Line
I have been down where the shaft thing is and u can hear the trains underneath
Mr. Marshall you made me laugh at 00:04
The evening train to Battersea Park is now in service all the way to and from Dalston Junction, no longer terminating at Clapham High Street.
Battersea park is in a carriage of a train, but is under limited service. It is also in the in train carriage map part of Clapham to Highbury branch
Good presentation
Young isambard Brunel narrowly escaped drowning and was sent to Bristol to recuperate. Whilst he was in Bristol he designed Clifton suspension bridge.
Ironically, Crystal Palace is one of two Overland stations I've been to. Lovely Station though.
Any chance of doing films (maybe just 1 film incorporating them all) of lost London subways such as the express tube lines (proposed but never built) the Tower Subway and Rammell's Atmospheric Railway (at Crystal Palace)?
The new map is available on the line status section of TfLs website! They messed up the Aldgate triangle and west ham is no longer a triangle of connector blobs.
You can see the camera man in the reflection sleeping
Rest in peace Shoreditch station 🥺😢😭😩😫
Crystal Palace... I usually think of the film WarGames and the code name for the Cheyenne Mountain complex in Colorado that is headquarters for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) operated by the US Air Force and the Canadian Air Force
i renember the east London line from the tube map
I used the underground while visiting london to get around. And let me tell you its efficient. Im from nyc and our subway lines are decades behind yours! They are trying to mimic everything the underground and overground do but fail miserably. We had a set of train cars that could work independantly with one operator during test runs failed. And the entire infastructure of the subway lines here is deplorable. Underground in london was enjoyable.
Up at 3am with a midterm tomorrow....
Nice :D
I live near the old Battersea station, just a load of trees there now, and a boarded up entrance to an old staricase is all that is left. I wonder if it would still be open if it wasn't hit by a bomb during the Blitz
What could be next? - Secrets of the River Lines - Secrets of the Santanda Cycles (Or However you spell it) - Secrets of The London Buses? Other Things? - Secrets of the Oyster Card - Secrets of the Tube Map - Secrets of Tube Stock etc - Secrets of the Announcements including Mind The Gap Off Related Things? - Secrets of the London Eye Maybe one of these ideas could be used!

So funny to see Geoff in a collar and tie
omg that's all you had to say about crystal palace! I'm almost in shock.... it had loads of platforms, different roof, the vacuum railway was about 50 foot from you, so much....
Don't forget the parliamentary train service that used to go from Wandsworth Road to Kensington Olympia (without going through Clapham Junction!)

Can you also do the secrets of the Overground at Lea Valley Lines please?
Making it a Wapping good time, huh?
with the abandoned stations bit you could have added "Primrose Hill"?
