Secrets of the MOTU Classic Roboto figure from Mattel. Origins of the robot and his shoulder issue

Scott ToyGuru Neitlich discusses the work (and extra work) that went into Roboto to make him perfect. And the disappointment with both fans and Mattel employees on how he turned out. Why were his shoulder swapped? How did his gears turn without scratching each other? The answers are here!

I loved Roboto as a kid and the Classics figure is great too! I'm surprised that the issues with the torso cracking weren't discussed but I'm most surprised by the logic of "we went the extra mile" but made mistakes so we just won't go the extra mile anymore. Why was it not "hey we got really close this time, so let's learn from our mistakes and make sure it's perfect next time?"

Yes, Roboto deserves much more respect than he gets! I really do feel that the Classics line showed great respect and love to the character. I'd love to see it get some type of re-release in some form with corrected shoulder pieces and even some more arm attachments. It truly is a work of art, as it is already though. Accidents and mistakes happen with every toy line, I respect the fact that you are so open about discussing them to help future toy makers learn from your mistakes as well as all of the other circumstances that had negative impacts on the product along the way. One thing that I thought you might mention in this video was Mr. Machine by Ideal. I remember my older cousin having that toy, so the moment I saw the Roboto figure as a kid, I was like "Whoever created this character clearly grew up with a Mr. Machine!". I don't think I've ever heard any "official" word on this (maybe?) but it's clearly inspired by it right down to the red and blue color scheme. great videos, I'm really enjoying all of the insight!

Oh, what an ordeal Classics Roboto was for me, which was a shame, because he is also one of my favorites. I ended up having to cobble one together out of two to make a more or less perfect one. The lower legs had been misassembled, with the two sides reversed, and the material at the top of the vinyl "underwear" was too thick, so it caused the clear plastic of the lower abdomen to spiderweb with obvious cracks. The clear chest had cracks that just kept getting bigger with time. I literally had to break open the one with the cracked front and swap it out for a front with no cracks (from the other Roboto which had a cracked back section), as well as shave down the underwear so it wasn't stressing the clear plastic anymore. I had to swap out the shoulders as well as trim down the mushroom pegs to alleviate the stress on the chest. After gluing it all back together, I had a perfect Roboto... For a time. Eventually, cracks started forming across the chest again, much to my disappointment. In the end, I purchased the Filmation version, stuck him in with the other Classics and called it a day. I really wanted this figure to work out, because I loved the design (obviously, since I ended up buying two to make one!) especially with the addition of the 200X head, but alas, it was not to be. Still, I'm grateful for the Classics line and all of the work you put into it. One single disappointment out of hundreds of awesome figures ain't too bad!

Love how the real name is a serial number! That’s very fitting for robots. I wonder how long you spent looking over the 1982-1987 Masters Of The Universe packages for serial numbers! As for ‘going the extra mile’ I suppose fans wanted them more accurate to the original Masters Of The Universe figures which meant once they saw there was something added that wasn’t on the original they felt it wasn’t being ‘Classics’ and more altered. Therefore they wanted it true to the original Masters Of The Universe versions? Revised in packaging version figure 2!

Well Scott, personally the duck-billed look was a big reason why Roboto never resonated with me. And although a true 200X version would have been better, allowing fans to replace that vintage inspired head with the 200X version helped. I actually sculpted one more inspired on the actual MYP cartoon and I handed it to you at WonderCon many years ago, but that was before I finished the sculpt. I'll have to send you a picture or two of it now. I do like the 4H sculpt, but I prefer my interpretation on it. I also modified it so that BOTH hands can be replaced with weapons.

I alluded to this issue in my post above. It was the thickness of the top of the "underwear" where it meets the bottom of the clear plastic upper torso. I discovered this while rebuilding him. It was so tight that it split the clear plastic around the gear shaft. These cracks traveled up and spread into the ribbed lower abdomen. I had to shave the thickness down quite a bit to alleviate the issue.

Recent follower and loving the videos so far since i get an idea of how all the whole toy business works and it's nice to see another side of that were toy collectors like myself are not aware of it and with this recent video you do appreciate it more not the effort you guys put but also the character like Roboto. One question that's a bit similar to this, when toy companies show the prototype of their figures which the majority look really cool but when we see the official figure we see they changed a lot of things some for the better but some for the worst like for example the recent April figure from the TMNT Toon series from Neca, they had 2 prototypes, the first one was ok but the face was kinda meh but the 2nd prototype they showed it looked really good that made me excited to get it but when Toy Fair of this year came up they showed the official April figure and...they made a lot of changes that it looks terrible from the very small body proportions to even make it look like the head is big and the face doesn't really feel like she's April. I have seen this done before from Playmates to Mcfarlane Toys and i know the idea that it's a prototype and will have some changes but you do feel those changes should be for the best and not to downgrade on something so good.

How and why changes are made between proto and final can happen for countless reasons. Licensor requests, talent requests, legal reasons. I always tried to not show a figure until it was final to avoid things like this. But it didn't always work.

@@spectorcreative1872 Thank you for the reply! I can see that happening a lot and as you said, it's better not to show it until it's official because it does make you go hype for the figure but be disappointed how the figure turned out a the end. Another question if I can, When a studio makes a cartoon, like Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon how does it work when they want merchandise for their new cartoon? Do the studios contact the toy company to commission toys for their series or the toy company goes to the studios on a deal to make merchandise? I always have that question in mind.

The reason the 200X version of Roboto was “disappointing” and didn’t have the shoulder canon is because, in this case, the figure was designed & sculpted Four Horsemen Studios before the animation studio altered that design for the cartoon.

hay Scott, hope you are doing well. we Could still see the kind of Roboto and other MOTU figures we always wanted. Mattel said that next year (2021) that thay are doing a MOTU line in 6 - 7 inch, very articulated. i hear it will rival hasbro Marvel Legends. it has been mentioned that mattel will be visiting all the different era's of MOTU including She-Ra. and that mattel hope's to make vehicles and playsets at some point, strength of line permits. i learned about this just befor mattel droped the news on the general public. and thats why i decided to skip Masters of the Universe Origins and hold out for this line. motu O is a good line, and its alway nice to get stuff out there for what ever people would be so inclined. But from what i'v learned about the 2021 line i am very interested. Honestly, I never even noticed the swaped shoulders, and never had a problem with his torso cracking. The only legitimate complaint I had with him was the sloppiness of the paint on the hands, and the only thing I would've liked done differently (but I understand why it was cut for costs) is to have the printed internal circuit boards of the original figure. Regarding the swapped shoulders, though, as it happened on a few figures: do you think it would have made a difference if the parts were embossed with the Chinese symbols for "Right" or "Left" on the pegs, so the assemblers could match them up to the proper sockets? Just something that occurred to me back in the day.

I always felt like Roboto's torso seemed too short. I think it is probably because there was no ab crunch vs the other figures. Aside from the cracking (I don't know that I've ever seen a Roboto whose torso isn't cracked at least a little), and the shortness of the torso, I think the rest of him is great. I am one of the people who usually can't tell things like reversed shoulders because the difference is so minute.

you know I don't get why you guys didn't just plastic mold out CLEAR cogs and paint the SIDES that do not touch. no paint smears and you would have gotten cheaper cost because you could mold them all in 1 cast at the same time you did the chest pieces. alternately you could have cone them all one color like blue and painted the side of the center cog and the sides of the bottom piece avoiding the parts that make contact with the other cogs.

Just one approach to try and get this to work. Obviously we could have made other choices!

The shoulders werent as bad as the poor quality clear plastic. It cracks from the waist. That’s not a shoulder problem.
