    So, the result of the first pull: 65 minute total drop in 30 feet of water with one can of unfrozen chub mackerel as bait. At least eight or nine crabs attracted to the trap, six crabs came up, one red rock and two legal-size Dungeness males plus three female Dungies released. Guest appearances by a nice school of herring and a big sculpin that came into the trap several times.

    As an observer, from a purely logical and analytical point of view, here are my observations. *Problems:* Crabs struggle to get into the pot. - Crabs' claws get stuck in the door, yet they don't realise they will get inside and become unstuck if they keep moving. Larger crabs don't appear to struggle as much, presumably due to their claw size and height. - Other crabs inside the pot block access. - Due to the placement of the doors and the way the current carries the food, two out of the four doors are going unused. *Solutions:* - Smaller-sized mesh over the doors. The additional rungs may provide better support for smaller crabs. - Add more doors to the side facing down current. Additional doors on the side most likely to be used may give more usable access points. - Cage corridor around the door and swing area. A cage surrounding the door may prevent obstruction. - Use more than one food source to prevent squabbling. - Suspend the food source(s) so they can be accessed 360° - Make the cage shorter in height, but longer and wider, with access points on top.

    Yep! The trade-off is making it harder to handle the trap, but that fix would be less expensive than adding more cameras. Plotting my list of AB tests and camera angles for the upcoming season.

    Thanks for the suggestion. That would make it easier to handle... but I think it would cramp the crabs' space in the trap. Simplest will be to add more cameras.

    I'm going to start crabbing this year in southern Oregon. I love your videos and commentary! Is it possible to attach the bait box/bag to the top of the pot to open up floor space so crabs are less likely to block the door?

  • @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo

    @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo

    5 ай бұрын

    Thanks, Steve! Do you mean attaching to the "ceiling" inside the pot or actually on top? I'd keep the bait holder inside the trap or you might have them climbing on top to get at the bait and then bailing off as you pull it up. As far as putting the bait on the ceiling, I haven't personally tried, but it'd be interesting to see as part of the bait tests next season. Some commercial and more expensive civilian rigs avoid the floor space issue by having ramps or raised tunnels so once a crab gets in it heads to the floor maybe six inches below and won't block the entrance. But I'm not sure floor space is too much of a limiting factor. I've brought this pot up with more than a dozen crabs in it rigged just like this. So as long as they're hungry and active they seem to figure out how to push or talk their way in past the others. But it's a good idea that would greatly reduce the chances of a bottleneck in this style pot. What I'd be interested in seeing is whether a small bait box like this one would be as effective on the ceiling because I'm guessing you'd have fewer crabs picking at and spreading the bait just because of the acrobatics involved. Another option would be to attach the bait to the ceiling but instead of a metal box, use a bait bag. That way it would hang vertically and take up less than half of the horizontal floor space that a box does, plus it would swing so the crabs could more easily push each other around. Best of luck crabbing!

    Seems to me a bigger cage trap or smaller bait cage would be beneficial, if it's legal of course. I'd think it would keep the crabs already inside farther away from the doors. Cool series tho, thanks.

    Yep! Definitely an issue with these first recorded drops. I've baited that way fir years and always caught plenty, but with these shorter drops (because the cameras only record an hour) I can see how the space slows them down. I've got two solutions to try: bait on the ceiling and, as you say, a smaller bait cage. I'm making some the size of the mackerel cans. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment and send the ideas.

    From what I remember, the commercial pots had the entrances half way up the side, I would think since they would be working upwards it would be easier to lift and harder to block.

  • @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo

    That's right. You can buy recreational pots with those kinds of entrances, too. More expensive, but solves a couple of the shortcomings this style has... though I'm still working on some improvements to these cheap ones from what I've already learned by doing g the videos. Thanks for watching!

    Hi from New Zealand. Loving the series of videos. 2 possible ideas from someone who has never been crabbing in his life: could you remove the horizontal bars from the doors so the crabs won’t get stuck on them? In the off-season could you remove the doors so the crabs have freedom to come and go at leisure? Cheers.

  • @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo

    @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo

    Hello New Zealand! Yes, the first modification I made to test next season was to the horizontal bars. I'm still tinkering with how/where to add some weight to the remaining verticals. So yes, good thinking! As for off-season, these traps are designed for short-term use, usually just to go down for a matter of hours. Even commercial fishermen only soak their pots for one or two days, although there is often a longer "pre-soak" period allowed before the commercial season starts. So no need to remove doors. In case they're lost they have rot cord over an escape hatch that is supposed to rot away so the trap doesn't keep on killing critters. Thanks for watching!

    Wondering if perforated doors of sheet metal or plastic would be easier for particularly the dunganese crabs to get in. And wondering if making the trap bigger with more floor space would allow more crab in. I like the idea of hanging the bait from the middle of the roof.

  • @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo

    @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo

    Yes, definitely going to be hanging the bait cage on the ceiling in order to give them more room to come in. I'll run a test with one floor and one ceiling cage in traps at same time, but I think that's likely a no-brainer. Working on a couple door ideas. Semi-solid has the issue of maybe swinging open with the current, but worth a try using different weighting options. The crabs are definitely strong enough to push open a metal door. Thanks for watching!

    On our scale, sure. Although I've met some humans who'd probably score on the low end of the crustacean spectrum. Very well adapted to what they do. But I'm also hoping to test whether they're smarter than we think if I can get permission to tag some. I'm wondering if the females learn to go to traps for an easy meal since they're always released.
