Secrets of a Monster Fish Store Owner [Tour]
It’s rare when I find a fish store that carries a lot of the species I don’t even recognize! Join me as I explore Ray’s Tank, just 20 minutes north of Denver, Colorado. They do ship fish, so check out their latest arrivals at / raystank .

*Have you ever kept monster fish before? What's your best advice to a fishkeeper who's only kept smaller aquarium fish before?*

Invest in a gravel vac!! Lol Best advice I could give.
I'm slowly getting interested in these big guys! Thanks Irene!

I really love how he mentioned the tanks there are overstocked. People go into pe stores and see tanks full of fish and think that's okay and they aren't educated and wonder why their fish die (and probably also aren't taught about doing water changes and don't know anything about the hobby in the first place to start). When stores are honest, and educate, and willing (and ABLE) to ask questions, I'm more likely to give them my business. Support the smaller businesses like this. Not to say some employees at Petco, Petsmart, etc don't care/aren't knowledgeable, but the business as a WHOLE. Also, I love his comment about how he'd be bigger than he is if he used buckets 😂 He's perfectly fine but as someone who is stuck using buckets and knowing how heavy they are, I can only imagine how much more tone my muscles would be if I had giant tanks like those (and as many), and changing them every few days to deal with the overstock issue lol
I love big fish there so choncky
Whoa! Those fish are so cool. I'd love to have some one day. It seems like a really nice place
Great looking store with a truly special inventory. Unfortunately stores like this sell fish that only 1% of hobbyists can house properly. Uneducated and/or novice customers contribute to untold thousands of fish deaths and/or abandonment as well as the release of unwanted fish into the wild. Hopefully they educate their customers on tank sizes, adult sizes, and length of life during their visit. I'm really surprised Irene didn't touch on this well known issue as it is one that has plagued our hobby for 50+ years. Probably worried that she would be labeled as "fish police". Personally I would never deny any stores right to do business or any hobbyists right to keep the fish they choose but they have to go into the transaction knowing the facts.
No way 😂 I saw this place after getting pho right next door a couple years ago… I walked out with a female betta who is still living in my community tank. Not quite a monster fish, couldn’t fit that anywhere at the moment hahah

Lol, that's awesome! Yeah I was totally shocked because they seemed to pop up out of nowhere, but that's because they opened during COVID. Glad they survived the pandemic!
Mixed feeling about this. I can't help but wonder how many of their customers can properly accommodate these species for their entire lives.

Government should do something to guarantee good lives for the animals
That’s exactly how I feel when visiting! So cool to visit, especially since I’m not familiar with many/most of the species there, not being a big fish keeper. Just took the hubby there recently, just to visit a la aquarium tour 😃 Great store, and Ray and his son are so nice!
Love your store tours! ❤❤❤
Omg Irene! I love ray's tanks! I got all of my exotic bettas and fancy goldfish from there, they are awesome! ❤

I would looove to get some fancy goldfish from them one day.
Largest fish I keep are goldfish, but wouldn't mind having something larger if I'm able to get the right tank size for 'em. Honestly, I found a mixture of organic manure, soil and peat moss to be an effective way to cycle a tank without using fish or additives (stuff fishless fuel). Added the mix, capped it, filled it up about 1/4 of the way with water for a couple days, fill it up and add bacteria after that. Took about 4-6 weeks for those tanks to finish cycle, going down to about .25-.50 ppm ammonia and nitrite, and 5 ppm nitrate on the second-third week.
Great video Irene😊
Informative !
That monster stingray is IN-SANE! Cool, original content!
OMG!!! I Didn't know you lived here in CO!!! I go to that place all the time!!!
😊Thanks for the info
I'm so jealous of Irene they're always new fish stores near her yet where I live I'm stuck with Petco and Petsmart.😢
Wow what a fish store! I'd like to have stingrays. They are so pretty. I have even seriously thought about having turtles. They do require a lot of work! They and stingrays require a lot of time and work. I think I will just enjoy them at a public aquarium! Thanks Irene. 🐠🐟🌹❤ Gina
Thanks!

I love your deep voice so much
I love rays tank! Been a customer for a couple years. Have you been to fish den?
It seems tanks for these fish can never be large enough to support an adequate quality of life. Like a goldfish in a bowl. They belong wild.
Those stingrays are so cute I wish I can get one
Yeah, forever monster indeed!
Love the video. Monster fish is where it’s at 🤨
Hi Irene, awesome looking store. Were you able to take your kids in to see those fish? If so, bet they were impressed. I can't imagine what the minimum tank size would be. Thanks for the tour. Is there one fish that you would have selected personally?

I haven't taken my kids yet, but that would be fun! I would looove to keep clown loaches some day, but a decent sized school would require a huge tank. Realistically, I would probably get some fancy goldfish. 🧡
Big fish need more love!
Love the monster fishes. The challenge is finding a monstaer tank to house them. Whether it’s glass or acrylic, it’s like a used Toyota 😂 Just do more water changes until you can house them better
Interesting! Do they sell the tanks too?

I believe they said they could help customers order one or give them a list of preferred custom tank builders. Try asking them on Facebook at facebook.com/RaysTank/
He mentioned they add salt but what is the dosage?

I would need to reinforce the floor before I put a tank big enough for monster fish. Maybe when I retire in 10 years I can have a Bichir and some Oscars.

Lol, same here. I guess I'd have to try to install one in the basement... and then never be able to remove it!
Does he sell monster size tanks? Any on the floor? 180g would be the minimum. Does he advertise larger sizes? (240, 300 540 etc)

I think he said they can order some sizes or refer you to several custom tank builders. You can ask him on Facebook at facebook.com/RaysTank/

Oh weird, do you think it's an algae or mold? Maybe try posting it to the Aquarium Co-Op forum with pictures so people can try to identify it. forum.aquariumcoop.com/
