*Which monster fish should I get first? I thought I wanted clown loaches, but Eric really likes his bichirs...*

I've never thought about getting a monster fish but after this video a bichir, maybe 3, sounds cute. I wonder if a bichir would snuggle with my 12 inch pleco.

@@Shellshockd85 I do wonder if those bichir sold by the fish stores are common pleco situations waiting to happen. I got mine from some friends who were moving cross country and we thought rehoming would be less traumatic to the fish. My family and I love her but we weren't PLANNING on going from a 20 gallon to a 90 gallon aquarium. But here we are!😅

I know you’ll probably never get a monster tank thanks to the stress issues but one of the coolest monster fish out there is freshwater moray eel. Unlike other “freshwater” eels which are actually brackish, this species are full freshwater!

Thanks for sharing. Monster fish can have good personalities. I loved my Oscar I had a few decades ago. Clown loaches would be my choice, but I hear good things about birchirs too.

I love it!! I’m not a monster fish fan myself, prefer nano fish like you, but I am curious about what would be considered “beginner” monster fish Bichirs definitely seem pretty interesting to me!

I like the bichir. However, my favorite wasn’t on the list. My boyfriend has 2 Oscars. They are still young 6 months old and are only 7 inches. They are the absolute best monster fish. He started with 1 a month later added another and they are always together. They have huge personalities. They are emotional. Every week he does a water change and they hide from him the rest of the day.

Out of true monsters? I adore bichirs. My favorite that I've had at the store I work have have been the Palmas, but ornates are gorgeous too!

I would like to get black angel fish. I don’t know if they are considered monster fish but I’ve seen some that were pretty big.

I am so lucky because in my country Asian arowana is legal. So without any doubt Asian arowana is my most favourite monster fish.

I dont recommend discus for beginner. When i started to keep 2 pairs, they stressed me out. Cotton fungus, ich, fin rot until i even put methylene blue everytime i wc. They had lots of requirement, temp, space & agression, def unsuitable for small tanks which is common for beginner.

if you want a true monster fish, how about a bowfin? Upside is they can thrive anything more watery than mud. Downside is their vomer plate (roof of the mouth) is studded with teeth and they are fairly ferocious. They are truly a relict species from the Jurassic. I trained a few to prey on invasive blue catfish but that got out of hand when they started attacking boat fishers reeling blue catfish. I rehomed them to the Ukrainian Navy to attack the Kerch Bridge.

I heard they’re pronounced bi-sheers because it’s an Arabic word. That said, I’ve always found their genus (polypterus) to be much more obvious in how to pronounce. I think we should just delete bichir from our collective vocabulary and just call them polypterus.
