Secretary Pete Buttigieg reacts to preliminary Baltimore bridge collapse report from NTSB

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg tells CBS News there will be a lot to learn about infrastructure and vessel traffic from the National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Seems a reinforced channel that merchant ships are required to pass thru would solve the problem. Private ships can go under the bridge anywhere but there.

It seems now that it’s known this ship had “issues” before it left port. Solution? If a ship has issues say 24 hours before leaving a port, it must be escorted out of said port by tugs. Once the ship has cleared sensitive areas, they’re on their own to repair the issue.

Same words almost EXACTLY were spoken over 40 years ago after the Sunshine Skyway Bridge accident. I remember our then president assuring all Americans " we will never witness a tragedy like this again." New federal laws, mandatory safety regulations and protocol were instilled. What about THAT transportation Czar Pete? Just because the Sunshine accident happened before you were born doesn't nullify mandates.

Pete Buttigeig has maybe an unfortunate name for the 13 year old boy crowd but he has a job and he does it. It's boring. He is well spoken about a very boring job but he cares about that boring job a lot and it shows. Government isn't always exciting. What I see in Pete is the commitment to roll up his sleeves.

Again, Pete with has false narrative of no known bridge design that could withstand this kind of impact. He is a smart enough person to know this, bridge protection systems have been documented, with a hefty section of a bridge design guidebook to design them since the Florida Skyway Bridge disaster, so he comes off as a liar. Multiple bridges have been struck, over a dozen with the bridges collapsing since then, yet the MDTA and the Port of Baltimore didn’t improve upon the paltry four tiny dolphins that left huge gaps for the Dali to sail through, and eliminated a requirement for escort tugs past the Key Bridge, leaving it up to each ship captain (maybe the pilot too) to request them (as expected, none to few do). Even with the Dali, the pier the struck tower was on stopped the Dali cold. Had there been sufficient numbers of dolphins of similar strength, they would have stopped the Dali before it got close to the tower, or diverted it away. Bridges in multiple other ports have significantly better protection features, even in the US. The Port of NY/NJ also still requires escort tugs, so they had enough nearby to rapidly respond and prevent the Qingdao from causing a similarly catastrophic event only a week or two after the Dali brought down the Key Bridge.

@@chow-chihuang4903 The Dali weighed 257,612,358 pounds loaded. Nothing is impossible, but how much money would it take to build a pier that could stand up to that? And to make every bridge that strong? This isn't Pete's fault, but luckily he's the man for the job to get fixed. Remember the I-95 bridge fire? Pete took care of that, did a fine job. Google it!
