When he said: I concentrate on what I'm thinking when I look a the woman across the desk... That clicked to me because I remember when Mr. Grey first met his new secretary and she spilled water on herself and was trying to awkwardly dry her blouse, he gave her a look of absolute lust and fascination. His gaze almost give away an "run, girl, you are in danger" type of vibe, like he realized he wanted and that's why he told her the job was boring, blunt, etc. Now it makes sense. He was having those thoughts that arise from feeling the hunger of his lust, the actor felt it, he was in character even in this interview, it seems.

James Spader seemed like he was uncomfortable explaining his character's personality. I'm surprised he didn't blush. His character seemed like he was a socially inept sadist with commitment phobia and struggled with containing his sexual urges.

@@msrochellef6983 I don't know. James seems a bit iffy to me because I haven't really heard any creepy tones in his voice. Otherwise, I could listen to his voice for HOURS. More than anything, I am confident in him physically acting out creepy roles like in Wolf. However, physically acting out a role is not the same as voice acting, which is challenging for some actors.

I think he is saying when he initially reads a part he does it from the mass perspective. But as he dives in closer and closer to actually manifesting the role it becomes more and more personal... so much so that when he is at the point of playing it, it is hard to express it in much the same way it is hard for Mr. Grey to understand and explain what he does. Notice how much he is like Mr. Grey here.... I wonder if he is a method actor.

I absolutely love this man, this movie and this interview. The things in this movie were very taboo when it was made and sadly still are today. Being different and liking kink are just not accepted. When you add that factor to shy public speaking (you see it in all his interviews) you get a "not making sense" but brilliant interview. This movie paved the way long before fifty shades came along and it wouldn't be what it is without both actors. He explained it the best he could (in a tap dance without ruining his career due to the taboo times) and he acted phenomenally in the movie. Just enjoy him and his his brilliance that is all

I'm going to take a risk by responding to this video. LOL I know some of the history behind James Spader, and he was quite a bad boy for some time. He was a huge crush of mine, and I still love watching this interview. In this interview, there seems to be a huge disconnect between his personal world and the character. If there was a better connection between the character and his personality, his words would have come to him at more of a natural pace. Obviously, he didn't live the character as Johnny Dep would have. Johnny Dep lives a character from day to day until he quits the role, and he doesn't even view his films. living the role leads to a better character understanding with a psychological study only had by constant work in different social dynamics. Could you imagine Spader leading a life like that? There is also a possibility that he had too much fun the night before or shortly before filming this interview too. It could be why he's sort of rambling. Just some random thoughts... He is undoubtedly still amazingly hot. He's come a long way.

You have to know what he is talking about and we also don't know what the question was. Listen to a few more of these videos from this series and you will see he is discussing the filming and acting process. He is saying that at this stage in the work he is into the minutiae of working the scene to get the right images on the film through the acting and not thinking about the big picture of the film as a whole.
