    Ah man i'm totally with you about using a reference track or five from the first stages of mixing and setting it to a set lufs level equal to your mix. From there though I wonder if your approach may be a tad clinical? If we think more artistically then we are talking about things like vibe and groove when judging limiter levels not engaging in the loudness war rubbish.

  • @EDMTips

    @EDMTips

    4 ай бұрын

    Hey in your case I wouldn't advise to mix all in mono. I mean, I do recommend checking your song in mono for phasing issues but otherwise keep it stereo and perhaps inverting the L/R channels on the master from time to time making sure none of your elements sits too little or too much on one side. Visual cues may play a bigger role in your production too so check the vectorscope frequently as well. Lastly, share your track with some of your producer buddies and ask them specifically also about the mix and the left/right balance. I'm sure their feedback will be of great value too. I'm wishing you all the best in finding your ways to work with your deaf ear! Andrew Huang might be a KZreadr you will be able to relate to as he's (partially) deaf too. Just an idea for inspiration. :)

    I tried this and got all of the loudness levels and frequency spectrum almost exactly the same as my reference track. Sounds amazing but the only problem is that I have to push the Pro-L2 too hard when bringing the level back up to match (around -7.5 LUFS) and there is distortion on quite a bit of the peaks. Is this most likely due to/fixed by compression on the individual tracks? Or just different stages of mastering like a multi-band compression etc? I’m so grateful for this video. Helped a ton, thank you! Edit: my problem area is actually just the kick and the low-mid range on a Deadmau5 style synth.

    Thanks Will! This makes me go back and reference more things. Haha. Seriously though! I've been struggling with a new song I heard and I am trying to figure out the hardwave style gate they did. It's the latest to drive me mad, because I am unable to re-create it, no matter what I do. I am not trying to copy it or use, just trying to understand it. Its pretty complex and excellent work by the artist. I often find myself trying to reverse engineer how things are done to gain a better understanding of what are the possibilities. When I was 16, I took a car apart all the way down to the frame and rebuilt it, just to gain a better understanding of everything. It's how my engineer brain works. I have since done it as well, with a motorcycle - but the purpose of that was to, in fact, restore it.

    Great videos as always. Quick question... If you don't own the reference track that you want to use and instead record a sample of the song off Spotify, how do you ensure you're comparing the LUFS correctly? The initial section you showed where we sync up the volumes is fine but when it comes to the mastering later, the reference track might be quieter or louder than how it was originally intended? Any way to handle that?

  • @jl9205

    @jl9205

    You can buy high quality reference tracks off of beatport for only a $1.29. If you set your faders to zero, your DAW should have a true rendering of the original track loudness. It's worth investing in several good reference tracks, because you will use them again and again, and you are also supporting the artists that are influencing your decisions. You can use the utility to lower the reference track volume so that you can get a fair comparison during mixing. But when you start mastering, you can also drop the reference track into the mastering project at full volume (with the ref track fader at 0 dB) for an apples to apples comparison of how your master track should sound in terms of overall frequency curve and loundess.

    When I saw the reference track's wave signature I was like, "Sheesh! That's gonna be loud and crushed." Just like all commercial EDM tracks. -6LUF is darn there Festival levels where dynamics be damned. -14LUF or if you're pushing it, -10LUF is a good place to STOP with the loudness.

But there is something I don't understand, I took a reference track, i sampled a loop of it and i run the two tracks (at the same tempo, at the same level heard, with no effects). I added Youlean meter on each track, and what i see? the original track average volume (integrated) is -9db lufs, whereas the loop track average volume is -23db lufs?!! I'd like to understand why please. thanks.
