This is pretty much the exact visual I used to learn this rule. I would picture a pawn dashing excitedly into battle (by moving 2 squares instead of 1) But the enemy pawn is prepared since they've been in battle for a while already, so they cut down the newbie the same way as if they had entered the battle normally (by moving 1 square).

Oh i thought my opponent called me a peasant
I remember about 8 years ago I was playing an under 12 tournament. My opponent moved his pawn as such and I used en passant and he proceeded to wail at me and told me my move was illegal. I then proceeded to call the arbiter and I explained that I used en pasant. The arbiter told me I couldn't, he didn't explain why and I was flustered the rest of the game. Fortunately I still won the game and then took the complaint to my coach and he told me not to make a fuss about it as I had already won the game. I remember that game till this day and it gets on my nerves every time I think back to it.

@@DipShitIdiotthis is because castling is a far easier move to explain and learn, and has many practical and strategic uses in the board and not limited to a very specific condition for such move to be legally done. Unlike en passant which the likelyhood of such conditions for it to be legally played is already very low, but also doesnt really give you much of an edge as it only works with pawns and in those very few times it is possible, it is often a bad move by comprimising your pawn structure.

@@charlestonianbuilder344 It is always the player making the double step move "offering" en passant. I feel like the opponent offering a pawn via en passant is always a trap - even if the trap is that you think it is a trap to take the pawn. I think in the next chess update the chess devs should make en passant a forced move.
Here I am finally getting accustomed to the Castle move then there’s this…
I always think of it as the pawn sticking out its leg and tripping over the other pawn
I think they developed it at or around the same time as the 2 squares forward pawn move. Cause a pawn moving 2 squares forward basically would escape the threat of capture from a pawn on the same rank, so this en passant move still gives the opponent the opportunity to capture the pawn as if it has moved 1 square.

Microsoft's built in chess game did this to me in 2009 and it still haunts me up until this day
En Passant = In Passing. It can only be played on a pawn piece during their initial 2-square move because that is literally the only time when a pawn can get next to another pawn without being in the striking range. Therefore the rule was created to address the weakness allowing for the pawn to take it anyway. It is a secret move because not many people actually use this rule and isn't allowed in most tournaments.

How does that sacrifice the logic? Originally, the first pawn's move could not jump two spaces. That was done just to speed up openings. But once you add that rule, it means pawns can bypass a take on the first square. That isn't fair, so this added rule fixes the problem.
Yeah, œn possænt is the best move
Remember, if you're about to checkmate your opponent but there's a possible passant, take the en passant. En passant is the true way to win chess.
