Always enjoyed the 80's cartoon's Man-E-Faces episodes. I thought he had a nice arc. Although, in later years, that might have been because I was tens of episodes deep in the "He-Man Drinking Game..." He-Man punches the screen? Take a drink. Bad guy lands in water or mud? Take a drink. He-Man launches a relic into space? Take a drink. He-Man bakes several bad guys into a loaf of bread and throws them all the way back to Snake Mountain? You better BET you're chuggin' the rest of your drink!

Great video as always, you talked about body suits, it reminded me of man-at-arms, as a kid I always wondered why his body was green, all green, except for his head of course. But the green hands threw me. I didn't watch the cartoon as a kid and thought there was some sort of back story about his green skin condition. I even swapped heads between him and tri-klops (not easy) to give him normal skin tone like he-man. It wasn't until later i realized he had a green skin tight uniform and matching gloves! Idea for future version: Instead of a spinning head inside, put a tiny color lcd screen. Have the thing connect to pc via usb so you can load more faces into the figure. Let fans share their created faces online. Keep the creation tool simple by having it be a simple square bitmap image of 16X16. It'd be enough to get creative and any digital artifacts would be unnoticed at the small size of the screen. Also, storage is cheap enough that you'd be able to probably store at least a hundred faces on it with minimal built in memory. On the figure, have three buttons to scroll through the faces. One for "up" or "Down", and a third button that randomly selects a face.

Lots of empty pegs, open spaces now. My mother worked at a retail midwest to upper east coast chain called Hill's dept stores (a which hasn't existed since 1999) for over 20 years. The head piece design of the vintage figure made it look like orange armor; you can see blue parts of the head piece slot into the orange and even get overlapped by the orange. Since it isn't likely that he's wearing skin color armor, that implies the rest of the orange is also armor or a body suit. The MOTUC design is quite different. Its "orange" areas are all very clearly sculpted as flesh, there is no area that looks like armor. As such, it only made sense to pick a more skin-tone color.

Coming to MOTU from Conan and Warlord, I initially disliked Man-E-Faces. He wasn't sword and sorcery themed, he had a stupid name, and he did not have removable armor. But he grew to be one of my favorite MOTU characters, with the 200x series really capturing the character's full potential. I always thought body suit because on my original toy, the orange suit obviously connects to his helmet. Dispite my sword and sorcery background, he, Trap Jaw and Roboto became some of my favorite characters.

A big part of what made MOTU different was the combo of tech and swords. I think that is why a character like Man-E-Faces does appeal to a lot. But for those who just like the sword stuff, yeah he sticks out.

That at 5:56 is called a Zentai (Morph suit is a brand name version). Without the head piece it would be called a catsuit. Just think about adding cat make up and a fluffy wig to the face/head. Or think of 7of9 from Star Trek (Or in some instances Dr Crusher aka the dancing Doctor). With the Zipper on the front or just a wide enough neck, it would be a jumpsuit. As it would louse a lot of its transformative character, of changing the wearer into a cat or other (naked) animal. What Teela wears is a leotard (name after French acrobatic performer Jules Léotard). Also worn by many dancers. Easy to confuse with a bodysuit, that either has snaps in the crotch (think of the fly in men's briefs) or has a design you'd wear only underneath/in the bedroom. Well, perhaps not you specifically....

I realize it’s a fairly small sub-set of the fandom, but do designers ever mention the customizing hobby? I know that community felt particularly acknowledged by the modular, swappable nature of the MOTU origins line, and plenty of alternate heads and accessories in Classics feel like a nod to “it’s your toy, make it the way you like it” collectors. But I’m curious whether anyone in those discussions at Mattel ever says “hey, it’s easier for someone to paint a skin tone orange than the other way around if that’s what they want.” Or even comments like, “customizers are going to have a field day with this.”

I had Man-E-Faces and Orion from Kenner's Super Powers collection. It's interesting the directions that was taken for how the 'face transformation' worked. With Man-E-Faces, you had three faces but you had to turn that dial manually. With Orion with his Apocalips original face and his O'Ryan human identity face, you had to squeeze his arms together to cause the spin. I know the Kenner's Super Powers line used 'action features' from the start (squeeze the legs of Batman and Superman, for example, and they do a punch action) and their line started in '84. Fisto and his evil counterpart (I forgot how to spell his name, it was something like Jujitso) came out in the same year. Thing is, I don't remember which was released first, Mattel's or Kenner's. Did one inspire the other to up their game? Was the Kenner Superpowers line going to be the standard, non-gimmick action figures, and they were inspired by the punching/judo-chopping duo? Or did Mattel realize they have to up their game to compete?

@@spectorcreative1872 What Mattel did for Man-E-Faces wouldn't have worked with the Kenner's line, since just flipping the face wouldn't fit in with punches, kicks, spinning waists and flapping wings.... Anyways, from what I remember (it's been years, so it took a while to recall...), Kenner modified the standard punching action figure they had. Just like Mattel's Man-E-Faces, there was a dial on the top of the helmet, but there was a spring in the neck. The face would lock into place, which would unlock when you squeeze the legs to get the 'Alpha blast' punch, revealing Orion's true visage. Anyways, with toys, it seems they are in a constant 'arms race, or in this case 'face race' to try to outdo the other guys. 🤡👽🤖
