Secrets of Hurricane Hordak in the MOTUC line. BONUS: How does Vac-Metalizing work? Vac-Metal toys

Ойын-сауық

Scott ToyGuru Netilich continues his Director's Commentary on the Masters of the Universe line from Mattel. As an added bonus, in this episode he also explains how Vac Metalizing works, the process for making toys shiny and looking like they have metal (i.e. the Kenner C-3PO)

@@spectorcreative1872 So true. I was happy when they reissued them a while back. I must have had multiple ones when I was a kid because I would keep losing their discs or their arms and legs would fall out of the body. I love that they made different color variants too, and the recent ones by Diamond Select are pretty nice as well.

True American art for sure, given the history and concepts, and especialy the materials and science involved. Honestly amazing. There should be a mattel museum. It's not that it was a money making monster and that's awesome for everyone anyway. But it is in fact a success for the impact on people on a personal level. Hurricane Hordak was the last figure I added to my Classics collection, sort of as an afterthought. Glad I did! Over time, I've developed a fear of vac-metal finishing on toys. I've had many figures, such as Power Rangers and Beast Wars, where they shed their chrome not from wear and tear, but from just sitting on the shelf. Oddly, I have Micronauts toys that are like 40 years old where the chrome is still positively pristine.

I remember the vac metal swords that came in old Lego sets in the '90s. There was this knight with a bat winged helmet that had a cool chromed sword and was packed with a black dragon. I chipped the hell out of the vac metal from clipping the sword in and out of the minifig's hands over and over. xD Random thought: Your end card (?) music sting could stand to be a few decibels quieter. Not sure if it's because I'm using ear buds but it's _noticeably_ louder than your normal talking volume in the rest of the video.

Vac-Metal is great when it's new and shiny, but man when it's near an articulation point or is simply coated over a less accepting surface it's a nightmare. I never liked Hurricane Hordak. Skeletor can get away with gold (God Skeletor), but it never looked right on Hordak. Flaking was also an issue on all my Hurricane Hordaks. I have 3 or 4 (I bought multiple subs to support the line). I was always in the "No vac-metal camp". I never needed every little thing replicated because "muh nostalgia". I will say the absolute best thing about Hurricane Hordak is the ability to cannibalize him for parts. The glossy black on his cowl is superior to the dingy silver on the original release. No stiff cape also allows for more posing. So I put the capeless cowl on three of my regular Hordaks. It's such a simple change, but it makes the original release Hordak one if my favorite figures. I also removed one of the cannon arms from a Hurricane Hordak and put it on a regular Hordak to create a sort of ghetto version of Filmation Hordak. It also gives you a Hurricane Hordak with non flaking black armor instead of that garrish gold armor. So overall not a big fan of Hurricane Hordak but he does allow you to create some much better versions. I'll take that as a win.

I know this is a random question but why do toy companies like Hasbro always gravitate towards making Plastic capes for toys instead of cloth capes? I absolutely hate the plastic capes Hasbro dose on the star wars black series and marvel legends more than anything, they are not even executed well and always fall off figures and don't stay on, they get in the way of some features. An example of this would be Moff Giddeon, Directer Krennect, Marvel legends black knight, Rise of Skywalker/ Last Jedi Kylo Ren, they just pop off and don't stay on at all. Also, the Mandalorian's beskar cape gets in the way of the Jet pack where you can really utilize the cape and jet pack at the same time, also figures can't sit while wearing the plastic capes. Are plastic capes cheaper to make than cloth capes? I noticed that toy companies are using the cloth alot less. I just absolutely hate the plastic capes with a passion, it's one of the most frustrating things I encounter when collecting. I just don't really understand the point of using plastic capes instead of cloth unless if its a way to cut down on costs

Vac plating is cheap as free. That’s why it’s appalling that they refused to vac chrome Cobra Commanders faceplate in the 25th anniversary line until after fans complained, and they’d already done 9 painted versions

@@spectorcreative1872 I don’t think kids buy gi joe and I doubt most adult fans plan on doing that much playing with thier Cobra Commander 35th anniversary fig, with gold leaf embossing on the packet, lol. I think the most prevalent issue is fading, like with transformers g1 accessories. (Which they did do properly in re issues.) Theyre currently making Cobra troopers with painted face shields, these figs are $35 at Target only andresell for $130 on ebay. I don’t think any of the customers are worried about the fragility of the face paint app. They want it to look better. I love all these MOTU universe, figs, I have most of them. It’s really nice hearing the production stories. I like Thunder Punch Heman classic too, he’s got some beautiful chrome apps on the chestplate. Why didn’t Classics Cobra Khan spit water? I really liked the Sludgehead figure, he sits near my sink so I can refill him, and in case of leaks, but so far so good. Why didn’t they make a much larger second run if Scareglows? Why do they keep acting like that figure doesn’t need it’s own separate case assortment? Even in the 2020 line, lol, brain dead execs!

While on the subject of materials, why on gods earth did you guys use such stiff and hard plastic on the capes and loin cloths????? It made the articulation use extremely difficult and or pointless on some/most figures. I.e King Randors cape made it impossible for him to sit with his cape on and the stiff loin cloths/skirts made leg poses difficult or impossible. Why didn't Mattel use pliable materials on the loin cloths/capes or even optional soft goods on the capes as well?

@@spectorcreative1872 as a real name for Hordak, I never cared for Hec Tor Kur. Instead, in my personal canon Hec Tor Kur was a Gar that Keldor tricked into becoming a vessel for Hordak's spirit to possess, explaining why Filmation Hordak was blue.

No commentary on the severe pushback the 4H received over the stupid ugly non functioning dial they placed on Hurricane Hordak? They rightfully received a ton of criticism and hate for that asinine move. The dial was cute on Syklone because it was small and unobtrusive. Same for Optik. It was beyond stupid on Hurricane Hordak.
