Thank you!!!!!!! So it turns out my tongue is meant for more than ice cream cones. I had never once thought about my tongue whilst singing. This is a complete game changer!
As a lifelong singer, I have to tell you, this is one of the best singing videos I've ever seen. The way you move the tongue to get various tonalities, switch registers, keys and pitches is one of the best kept secrets. Mainly because people usually don't go that technical unless they're deep into singing.

I have been singing everyday for a year and mainly self taught. I stumbled upon the tongue and how important it is :)

Amazing!!! Thank you!!!!!
I use tongue root all the time when I belt. And then i’ll bring the cricoid cartilage through to make it fully big for maybe 2.5 seconds. What I find is this is how many pop singers are “belting.” It makes your thin folds sound “pseudo thick.” or “fake thick folds” as I call it. (Estillian here) Kerrie’s tongue root research is best. I’ve been teaching tongue root to my students and it’s the best.
I hear it in Celine so much, it's a very helpful trick if you can control it
One of THE BEST voice lessons of all time. Resonance is the key to modern teaching imo. And you nailed that.
She’s so excited when showing the examples I love it 😂
Ms lady you could have charged a million dollars for this lesson, you have completely changed the game for me, this is what I was missing, I just been doing it back accident. That opera singer gave me chills down my body, damn she can sing.
Wow!!! This was a game changer! Higher belt notes felt effortless! Love your channel!

Awww yes! My favourite word to hear a singing student say. "effortless". Love it! Thanks for sharing your experience Maria! 💜

AGREED. That’s how so many pop singers are belting. And Idina does it too!
An interesting phenomena could be that as we all experience less and less singers in an auditorium/opera theater setting and more through microphones/speakers with balanced volumes in each track, some of the techniques that were necessary to have a performer pleasantly audible in a large space above loud orchestras are a lot less important this has allowed nuances that would previously have traded too much carrying power for tone-shaping to become distinctive styles

Absolutely this 🙌🏻
OMG I am a new subby. I am IN LOVE❣️I thought the ‘secret mix’ was click-bait so I started not to click. SO glad I did! Where have u BEEN all my life??? AND u’re humble‼️ ♥️♥️♥️🗣🎧♥️♥️♥️
I learned this when I noticed Christina doing it in a live performance of “You Lost Me”. It was one of those “that’s how she does it!” moments haha
Your a wow 🎉singing coach / teacher singers A big hug and thanks and smilies I lost my voice during an illness then I had concussions had neck injuries and I saw the big difference. Then I started developing sinus problems and a big difference, upper respiratory yada yada yada little by little like an onion I am layering down you are the best for me yet thank you for your gift. I’ve been working to improve for years one session with you. I saw a difference and I could feel it in the back of my neck, the tip of my tongue, the roof of my mouth and my surrounding your line and I do facial exercises and facial massage and I could tell what was going on. You are one fantastic teacher. Thank you.❤😊
Omg yes, this is something I noticed when I watched the bodyguard over (&over&over lol). I loved Whitney movies growing up cause I watched her sing, and noticed her tongue "looked weird". It took a long time to figure out how to place my tongue like that, but this video simplifies it so well!!
George Michael (R.I.P.) did that in the song "Careless Whisper" many times (and in other songs). For example on the frase "Pain is all that you find". Wonderful composition and imo one of the best singers and a really great sounding voice.

Oh hell yes, great call! George Michael was such a great example of a singer who just had the most exquisite vocal resonance which made everything he sung sound so effortless yet powerful. 💜

GEORGE was INCREDIBLE!!!!!!! I always thought he would be amazing singing a duet with Mariah back in the day.
I've done it a couple of times now (I'm a Xtina fan) and she does that a lot and so did I unintentionally. I was kind of scared of doing it because I thought it was bad, I'm glad that it isn't. Thank you for this wonderrful tip.
Before and after at the end was insane, thank you! ❤

I gave myself a fright to be honest!
This literally was a complete changer for me on a song I've been trying to record vocals to for MONTHS. I struggle in my mix area, either pulling too much of my chest or it feeling too weak/airy. Plus I struggle with muscle tension dysphonia which definitely doesn't help! Learning to access this type of resonance has allowed me to sing in this area with so much less effort, the intonation is 10x better & my voice doesn't feel so strained. Thank you for this video!!!

So glad this was helpful Jennifer!
The frequency thing is so cool. When you showed the difference in that vocal line I got chills. The difference in tone is tangible
I don’t even know who you are… but OMG, have I been looking for you for so long!!! 😮 I can’t even comprehend how much my mind is blown right now!!! To be clear, I’m so glad I found this video and your channel! KZread algorithm finally got one right!!
Thank you! I was noticing that sometimes I could reach the high note more effortlessly than other times, I knew it had something to do with tongue placement, but you explained it perfectly! Now I get it.
My older sister used to make fun of my voice for singing like this, but I learned by mimicking Christina. Hearing this is an actual vocal technique has made my day. All this time I thought I was singing improperly💗😭

Found your channel about a month ago, I think. REALLY enjoy the work you put into these. So much mastery in the "education" of it all but you have a way of making it sound like English lol with an adorable Irish accent to boot!

Aww you're so kind Josemery, thank you! All the effort feels so worth it when I read such a thoughtful comment like this. Thanks so much for taking the time. Great to connect, and look forward to sharing more vids like this in the future!! x
I watched this because I am struggling to record a vocal (I am not really a singer) and I thought it might help. I definitely will try it, and I believe it will! I have joked around singing like Chevy Chase in some of the VACATION movies, and thought I noticed that there’s something there. But the real takeaway is that I am now in love with Renée Fleming. Again. 😅
This took my belting to another level! Thank you 💗

LOVE to hear this Ani!! Taking it to the HNL (whole 'nother level!)!
Aaaaaaaah this is so good! Perfectly articulated! And as usual, SO FUN! I feel like I've unintentionally come across this tongue position/tone quality sometimes when singing and been scared by the accidental kermit sound. This is such a good way to identify and intentionally lean into the kermit, befriend him, learn from him. Thank you so much for this Gemma, and for your channel - it's been so helpful (and entertaining!)
I found you on tiktok, and while your techniques are excellent for all singers, this one has really gone above and beyond to share them with us. I appreciate it and hope to be coached by you in the future. yiieee🥰

WOW! Very cool! Thanks for sharing this! ❤️🙂👍
THANK YOU
I like your pipes! I can't really understand what your saying but it reminds me of something I do sometimes when I'm hitting notes around the passagio, with good support (controlled belting). I sing the note in a dark sort of way, it is as Pavaroti would say "covered". Then I gradually brighten the sound by placing the sound at the front rather than the back, by changing the shape of my mouth/tongue. This makes the note more bright and cutting. This combined with good support really makes it a strong and bright note. Tonal placement.
Wow! This video was suggested to me by the KZread algorithm. They really got it right - this is fantastic! I'm subscribing!
Awesome thanks for this great educational video 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Bravo 👍 what a key to know. Thank you 💗

Add a good producer to this techniques and you are a star...I saw that with my little sister. this other guy "Lezina J". He makes her very nice songs. Said she found her right here on KZread. don't know how they do things but she loves to sing even more. Thank you KZread guys. All of you deserve more.

3 years into my singing, song writing and producing (oh and pianists :) ) journey and at the point where its all coming together. these videos have been the icing on the cake and that's surprising after the amount of daily practice, thousands of hours of tutorials and well known online course. True artist is sharing the holly grail of information. Thanks Gemma
