The tower of the Citadel, where all the maesters train, is in Oldtown. We catch a glimpse of the city when Sam and Gilly arrive there in GOT season 6.

Otto the Hand, is a Hightower, the house that rules Oldtown. The symbol of the Citadel is their house's coat of arms. The older lady, Lady Redwyne in episode 3 that Rhaenyra was talking to is a decedent of Olenna Tyrell, her maiden name is Redwyne. Seasmoke is the dragon that Laenor Velaryon rode

The Hightowers actually feature a bit here and there throughout ASoIaF as well; Margaery is in fact half Hightower, her mother being Alerie Hightower.

George R.R. Martin said he always had an issue with how Robert Baratheon's hunt was portrayed in Game of Thrones. He got to do it right in House of the Dragon.

“Burst belly” is a fancy, Medieval version of appendicitis, a guaranteed death sentence in such times. Otto didn’t poison him. Viserys was merely pointing out that Otto’s lucky to be where he is in society-a second son of a minor house that’s Westeros’s top diplomat. Ser Otto is complex, no doubt. Did y’all realize that Ser Otto is portrayed by Ryhse Ifans? The same guy who was Looney Luna’s dad and Little Nicky’s brother?! 😂

About the credits: you see the whole Targaryen history unfold from Aegon the Conqueror until… now. The buildings are the exact same as the model of Old Valyria Viserys is working at in his bedroom. It creates a 3D Targaryen family tree for about 100 years. The quadrants represent kings and queens. The blood running is all the bloodlines connecting them. When a quadrant fills up with blood, it means that the person is dead. Each person is represented by a symbol (their crown or something else, like the sigil of house Arryn for Aemma, Viserys’ first wife or her Valyrian steel necklace pendant for Rhaenyra). Cool detail: Rhaenys, one of Aegon the Conqueror’s sisters/wives of died in battle in Dorne along with her dragon Meraxes. Her symbol is thus her dragon’s skull, pierced by a scorpion bolt. You have a really cool detailed explanation of the credits at the beginning of Alt-Shit-X’s video for HOTD season 1 episode 2. Check his channel if you don’t know it already, it’s great. He makes a detailed analysis of each HOTD episode. There is also a ton of content on GOT and the ASOIAF books.

It is one of the most common pub names in Britain. From medieval times pubs/inns were required to hang a sign outside to identify them, and many chose the white hart (ie a white stag) because it was the personal badge of the king (Richard II).

There is a concept during these times call Targaryen Exceptionalism. It means that incest is bad except when the Targaryens are involved. During the time of Aegon the Conqueror this idea is the only reason that the Realm could come to terms with the ways of the Targayens.

King Maegor Targaryen build about 50 tunnels under the Red Keep, for the Royal family to escape in times of war and not everyone in the family knows, that why Rhaenyra didn't know about that passage in her room.

Lots of brothers because younger ones are technically also second of his name (surname). Daemon, Vaemond, and Otto are all second sons. Otto’s older brother is that dude that kept shouting “hail Aegon, second of his name” which is technically a treason because you only get that title if you’re king.

Rhaenyra is 18 in e3. 14 in e1, then in e2 6 months had gone by and Viserys mentions she's 15. Then e3 a whole 3 years have passed and she's 18.😊

The rhoynar were another group of people that settled in westeros, particularly in dorne

Along with the jousting tournament, this hunt really shows the difference between when Robert was king vs the height of the Targaryens.(besides budget differences) Everything was so much grand and extravagant.

That was just show budget reasons. His hunting party was just as grand, even George RR Martin was like that's not how his hunt is supposed to be. But I get it, they had to save money where they could and still tell the story

I think you did get onto something with the dreamers / prophecy Targs being even more dangerous. Its only hinted in the series (Both GoT and HotD). In the books its way more clear that Danny was a dreamer / prophecy Targ. She had "dragon dreams". It was those dreams who set her up to be so all about the Iron Throne and conquering everyone. So a lot of her "I am the one who knows whats best for everyone" does come from the fact she thinks she has some higher power linked to her. She thinks she is like a "chosen one". One can only imagine how her interactions with Melisandre will look like in the books if they ever will exist. Its quite likely someone like Melisandre and her "the prince that was promissed" will deeply fuel Danny who already has dreams and prophecy going around her.

A hart is a male red deer, synonymous with stag and used in contrast to the female hind; its use may now be considered mostly poetic or archaic. :) I didn't know it either before this show.

Trivia of the Rhoynar: The Queen who led the Rhoynar across the sea from Essos to Dorne was Nymeria, after whom Arya named her dire wolf. Unlike the patriarchal Andals, the Rhoynar accepted Queens & ruling Ladies of different provinces.

I loved Viserys for his love and loyalty to Rhaenyra.

Otto is an amazing character and incredibly well written throughout the whole season, he is a huge part of why house of the dragon is such a perfect show in my opinion. Viserys is up there too. The acting pairs with the writing incredibly well. Good writing with great acting is all we ever wanted after all. We need more shows with such perfectly written characters that's for sure !!

I like Vyseris , with his flaws, and I think Paddy Considine did an excellent job portraing him!

Just a little background on the hunt: they are hunting in the kingswood. only the king is allowed to kill animals in the kingswood. that's why they cornered the stag and why the king had to deliver the final blow. These hunts are quite normal and in the events of game of thrones Robert Baratheon was known to enjoy the hunts and do them often. The reason that in that first season with robert they were just walking around with a small group was actually a budget one. the scene was ment to be a large grand hunt similar to what you see here but most of the horse budget was already spent and cutting that scene was an easy way to save money. Keep in mind that this was the very first season so the big money wasnt really there just yet. Also note the significance of rheanyra killing the boar in this third episode. Only the king is allowed to make kills in the kingswood so there is a certain political implication here. Hope that clarifies some of the stuff around the hunt

The Rhoynar refers to the inhabitants Dorne who migrated there from the Rhoyne river in Essos. The Valyrians conquered their civilization and a Rhoynar queen named Nameria (Arya's Direwolfs name) sent the rest of her people on a thousand ships to search for a new homeland. They landed on Dorne and she married one of the Martels.

The opening credits with the theme shows the bloodline of house targaryen and their blood of old valyria coursing thru their veins. The bloodline is flowing through king viserys's model structure that is seen in his bedchambers. Starting with 'the doom of old valyria' in essos. Each cog has a sigil / crest that represents a member of house targaryen in bloodline / family tree order. Whenever a sigil is covered in blood, it means that the person it represents has passed. If the sigil is visible, it means that targaryen that the sigil represents is still with us in the series.

viserys and daemon's behavior at the luncheon gives us a glimpse of their probable relationship growing up. viserys is absolutely giddy (at alicent's expense) that his brother's come back a winner. the "cool kid/black sheep" of the family often has this effect on the more straight-laced and responsible (and envious) siblings. sadly viserys had to learn that he's still not exempt from his brother's perpetual scheming.

Something that isn't super obvious is that Vicerys had a sense of relief when the stag they caught wasn't the White Hart. Otto kept saying that it was a sign from the gods that it appeared on Aegon's bday. It would have reinforced his doubts on whether he had made a mistake making Rhaenyra heir.

Daemon was gone 4 years he changed a lot, matured a little and realized how much he missed his family

I hope you guys can apreciate that Alicent while she did marry Viserys she only did it on the command of her father she always stood up for Rhaenyra, she tries to do for Rhaenyra what she never had a choice in her own life. As described by Rhaenyra imprisonned in a castle and squeeze out heirs. Alicent is a lonely girl who deserves more pity and simpathy that she gets, she told viserys to help daemon even though her father didnt want to help them and she never mentioned talked about the succesion, and defended rhaenyra to viserys when they cuestioned her virtue.

I'm literally reading Fire & Blood right now and am enjoying watching the show from a book readers perspective, since I didn't get that with GoT, having read the books after the show. It's nice to have this perspective.

Targaryen tension is a fantastic term lol. Especially for what's going on there. I love how much you guys interpret immediately. Probably the only reactors I've seen not be confused as to why Alicent confronted Rhaenyra and why everyone was up in arms.

A whIte Hart is a male dear with Leucism, a condition that effects the pigment of the fur. They where used in Heraldry(what are called sigils in Game of thrones) though often as a personal badge and not as part of the actually coat of arms( aka sigil). Kings Richard II of England used a white hart with a chain around its neck as a personal badge. Henry V used a white swan. Edward IV used a Sun in Splendor and a white falcon with a chain on its foot. Also his family used a white rose. Richard III used some of the same as Edward IV(his older brothet) but also famously a white boar. Henry VII and Henry VII used the Tudor rose(a combination of the a white rose of House of York with the red rose of the House of Lancaster) and famously a Red Dragon(for this heritage in Wales). Also every heir to the English throne since 1346, (titled the Prince of Wales) has used three white ostrich feathers on a black background as a personal badge. The story behind why is fascinasting. At the battle of Crecy between England and france, King John of Bohemia, who was blind and was a ally of the French lead a charge against the English knights lead by the 16 year old heir to England, Prince Edward of Woodstock. The Czech king died but Prince Edward was so impressed with the bravery of the Blind king he adopted King John's personal badge and motto( "Ich dien" WHICH translates from German to English as "I serve" ) as his own every Prince of Wales from Edward to the current Prince William has used it.

Fun fact: Seasmoke the white dragon the dragon that saves Daemon at the end of episode 3 is said to be the dragon Dany’s Dragon are from which is why the show makers made this dragon look similar to the dragons in game of thrones.

the roynar is the ethnicity that lives in dorne, oddly enough in hotd dorne is not part of the 7 kingdoms but they mention it anyways, while in game of thrones it is part of the 7 kingdoms but they dont mention it

Matt Smith NEVER disappoints. He is such a good actor. To me, he will always be the Doctor. You guys should give Doctor Who a watch. Also. So many people seem to miss this. Rhaenera told Alicent she hadn't slept with Daemon. Which was true. Alicent assumed from that that Rhaenera didn't sleep with ANYONE. Hence the 'she swore to me that she remains a maiden' line. No, Rhae never said that. She said 'DAEMON never touched me'. Side note, she didn't mean that literally, she meant that he didn't sleep with her. If I made out with a boy as a teenager but not slept with in him and my parents found out, I would've used the same terminology.

Thats Laenor Velaryron riding Seasmoke. laenor is the son of Coryls Velayron and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. Laena the little girl who they wanted the King to marry in the earlier ep is his sister. His mother was also called the Queen who never was is the older first cousin of King Viserys and Prince Daemon. Rhaenys herself is a dragon rider as she rides Meleys, a red Dragon nicknamed the Red Queen. Interestingly Meleys was the Dragon of Alyssa targsryen, mother of King Viserys and Daemon and Daemons Dragon Caraxes was the Dragon of Aemon, Rhaenys father. So Daemon rides a dragon his uncle rose and Rhaenys her aunts.

The Rhoynar are the ancestors of some of the people in Dorne. They fled potential slavery to the Valyrians and crossed to Westeros in ancient times. They where lead by a woman Nymeria(who Arya names here Direwolf after). Nymeria married Mors Martell the Lord of sunpsear and their descendants are the Martells you know From Game of thrones(Oberyn, Doran, Tyatane and the sand snakes, as well Rhaegsrs first wife Elia) Westeros had three waves of human settlement. Before that the intelligent species where the children of the Forrest and the giants. then the first men came. The first men in Game of thrones are represented by the Northerners (like the Starks, boltons, mormonts), the free folk, the Mountain Clans in the Vale, The Iron born(who are First men but have their own religion), and a few houses in the South such as the Royces in the vale, the Blackwoods and Brackens in the Riverlands. Then came the Andals. The Andals invaded, brought the faith of the seven and tried to convert or kill the first men. They where defeated by King Theon Stark and that's why the North kept its religion but in the South almost every house except a few like the Blackwoods either intermarried or converted to the faith. The Abdals brought the concept of knights with them. The Rhoynar came after fleein wars in Essos

In Robert's Hunt in season 1 they did not have the budget for a royal hunt...George RR Martin has said that was his least favorite scene in the whole show because its supposed to be extravagant

Rhaenyra didnt lie to Allicent, she swore that her and daemon never had sex not that she was a maiden. Allicent just assumed and was the first to lie to Rhaenyra anyway so Rhaenyra was right not to tell Allicent everything when Otto is trying to take the throne for his family instead of her. Also, NO Otto didn't just tell the truth, he's been conspiring since the queen died to replace the kings chosen heir. Otto was wrong in his information because NOBODY could have seen Daemon & Rhaenyra coupling since it never happened lol
