Second Moment of Area Example 4 (I beam)

Here I calculate the second moment of area (moment of inertia) for an I beam. The easiest way to do this is to find the moment of inertia of each of the rectangles about the I beams centroid (note you'll have to use the parallel axis theorem)
Ix = Ix1 + Ix2 + Ix3

I've watched 5 videos trying to understand how to apply this theorem and you have the most detailed explanation and yet the simplest solution to this question. Thanks so much!

yes. definitely
excellent video! Thanks for giving reasoning behind all your actions at the very start (like why not to use integrate(y^2 dA) ), it definitely made it clearer.

Very good explanation - thanks for sharing 👍
Awesome video man thanks.
Man you are saving my life!!!!!!!!!!!!
What if the axis of a member is diagonal to an axis that you need? Parallel axis theorem twice or just take that diagonal distance once?
You are my savior.
Sir, please explain in detail how to know about in Frame structures the vertical height is 5mt is given I and horizontal span is 10 Mt whi ch is given 2I, about the relative stiffness which we are calculating in Momemt Distribution Method
Thank you. This video help a lot!

Great video. Helped me a lot. BUT, there is an error. Ix bar is second moment of area of individual shapes. And at 3:20 you had to write Ix' (second moment of area of the whole shape) instead of Ix bar.
Great video
it makes a lot of sense
Thanks alot, man.
Sir here u have written Ix i.e. found moment of inertia on x-axis and what about Y-axis???
Thank you!
Thank u❤️

Amazing video. I have also subscribed. Maybe there is hope for me to pass civil engineering. Thank you
If the question asks to Find I about its base, do you still use H to the Centroid or do you use H to the base? Thanks

Hi, do you mean for the whole I beam? Or just a rectangle? For just a rectangle do the following: 1) calculate the moment of inertia about the centroid I_x_bar = 1/12 b h^3 2) Apply the parallel axis theorem Ix = I_x_bar + A d^2 3) In this case A = area of rectangle = b*h, and d = distance from base to centroid = h/2 therefore Ix = 1/12 b h^3 + b*h * (h/2)^2 = 1/3 b h^3 If it's the whole I beam do the following: 1) Calculate the moment of inertia about the centroids of each of the 3 rectangles. 2) Then apply the parallel axis theorem to each of the 3 rectangles individually. the 'd' values will be the distances from the base of the I beam to the centroid of each of the 3 rectangles. 3) Sum them all up Hope that helps :)
Thank you

Hi Kinda late here Alternatively you could find the moment of area for the whole square of the I beam and subtract the 2 void moment of inertia areas

Hey mate, what was your process and what was your answer?
Is that how you speak or you are excited? Need to speak slowly
This is a H-beam, not I-beam; they are technically very different !
Thanks
