Second Moment of Area Example 4 (I beam)

Here I calculate the second moment of area (moment of inertia) for an I beam. The easiest way to do this is to find the moment of inertia of each of the rectangles about the I beams centroid (note you'll have to use the parallel axis theorem)
Ix = Ix1 + Ix2 + Ix3

    I've watched 5 videos trying to understand how to apply this theorem and you have the most detailed explanation and yet the simplest solution to this question. Thanks so much!

    What if the axis of a member is diagonal to an axis that you need? Parallel axis theorem twice or just take that diagonal distance once?

    Great video. Helped me a lot. BUT, there is an error. Ix bar is second moment of area of individual shapes. And at 3:20 you had to write Ix' (second moment of area of the whole shape) instead of Ix bar.

    Hi, do you mean for the whole I beam? Or just a rectangle? For just a rectangle do the following: 1) calculate the moment of inertia about the centroid I_x_bar = 1/12 b h^3 2) Apply the parallel axis theorem Ix = I_x_bar + A d^2 3) In this case A = area of rectangle = b*h, and d = distance from base to centroid = h/2 therefore Ix = 1/12 b h^3 + b*h * (h/2)^2 = 1/3 b h^3 If it's the whole I beam do the following: 1) Calculate the moment of inertia about the centroids of each of the 3 rectangles. 2) Then apply the parallel axis theorem to each of the 3 rectangles individually. the 'd' values will be the distances from the base of the I beam to the centroid of each of the 3 rectangles. 3) Sum them all up Hope that helps :)
