What I love about Chabal's hits is that he always (or almost always) wraps the arms round in the tackle. You see too many players - Nonu and Alesana Tuilangi in particular - not wrapping the arms in a tackle. It's illegal and dangerous to shoulder barge and I often see people defending it saying "When you hit that hard it's hard to wrap" and yes, it's difficult but as the good L'homme de Cave Mr Chabal shows us, not impossible. I love big hits but I hate illegal ones.

I don't think I've ever seem him make a hit that was even questionable, whether it be on the timing or wrapping arms. I love the way Chabal channels his aggression into the game without trying to injure people; truly the mark of a great player.

That was the beauty of this player. As much he was quite irregular in attack, he was so solid in defence. A monster.

Good solid tackle, really well taken by Heaslip, ball nicely presented for his teamates. You gotta love Chabal really, he plays with a bit of heart at least!

Great tackle but a bit high. Not illegally high but had it been a slight bit lower the hurt in Jamies ribs might have prevented the excellent ball presentation! I'm Irish but Chabal is a legend btw.

Thanks for the footage. Chabal is a great guy on and off the pitch, I definitely prefer him at 8 than playing second row. I just wish his coach would ask him to target the intervals rather than his direct opponent. At Sale he had an excellent ability for off-loads which he never really had a chance to show when playing fro France.

That was a serious hit, the kind that makes you get amnesia of the lt ten minutes. Though Heaslip done well putting it back, I wouldn't have been concious.

  • @BonuxCouleur

Now, Chabal has learned a lot playing as a second row. In the line out he has become quiet outstanding and going through the scrums also made him more endurant than he was. He would make an excellent back up for Harinordoquy at # 8 for France. I also like Picamole in the game play, but Picamole is not as versatile. Only time will tell what Lievremont makes of his qualities.

What pisses me off is that every time Chabal tackles like that, his team mates right behind him stand watching like a bunch of spectators instead of going for the ball. Any tackle is a waste when your team mates do not follow through.

@protected4all That's because in rugby the idea is to get hit. If you were to get hit in rugby and roll around on the floor it would accomplish nothing. If you do in football the referee buys it and dish's out cards. It is not the players in football to blame, it's the referees for buying that behaviour. Look at when Howard Webb referees no one stays on the floor because they know he doesn't buy it. He just says get the fuck up

@TheMooreorless107 There is lots of skill involved, many fine nuances which u have to play the game for years to pick up. Being able to read and predict the movement of play which only comes with time, this is most helpfull to loose forwards. No one is fit eneough to sprint to the ball to be the first one there all the time, so how do u get there first consistently? Predict the movement, aswel as little things u pick up over years. Fullback is an extremely hard pos. to play, lots of skill needed

@Russell101 i dont agree with you, i think ego money and looks, whilst too much a part of football, is certainly not more important in the sport than the gameplay itself, and i can show you many famous players right now who are hardly the stereotype you describe. yet i do agree that all those top level rugby players are hardly fat at all and most of them only look to "broad" (fat to an ignorant person) because they have a very large and wide (yet muscular) core. theyre all huge.

@Russell101 Serge Betsen a cheat???? How? When? You must be kidding me. Betsen is THE most dedicated and uncompromising player I have ever seen. He is the only rugby player to have a boxer's face. If he has so many cuts and scars that is because he used to put his head where no one else would, not his fist. He was certainly not a cheat. Serge Betsen, Olivier Magne and Imanol Harinordoquy were the dream combination in the row. Betsen was a World Class flanker.

Thanks to the appalling ignorance and xenophobia of my fellow Americans, the great career of Sebastien Chabal, and the wonderful sports of soccer, rugby, and cricket, are treated as if they occur on some unknown alien planet. I am American born but my favorite sports are soccer, rugby, and cricket. I worked for Motorola as a Software Engineer, co-workers from India were always surprised that an American like me loved cricket.

@dadge35 correct, rugby does have it's cheats. I've always disliked Serge Betsen and quite a few of the South African players can be nasty. The difference is, when people are caught cheating in rugby, whether it be during the game or after, proper action is taken. The only reason the fake blood incident got so much coverage was because that kind of thing hardly ever happens, but if every time someone cheated in football made it to the news, there would be no time to talk about anything else
