Seattle YouTube star restores watches for millions of viewers! ⌚

Seeing someone repairing a watch doesn't sound like must-see TV, but what started as a hobby has turned Seattle's Marshall Sutcliffe into a KZread star.
"I wanted it to be a space where you could like, hang out with me. And you could put aside whatever else you have going on in your life or the world. And you can just get into my little world on my bench. And you and I are going to go through a journey together where we restore a watch."
For the past two years, Marshall has taken his hobby of repairing old watches online with his KZread channel, Wristwatch Revival.
"I thought I'll get some people that are like for the nerdy people that want to just kind of go deep with me and get into this. That's the kind of audience that I'd be looking for. But as it turns out, it has a wider audience and I am thrilled about it."
He gets most of the watches he repairs off of eBay or given to him to fix by friends and family. All of them can be a challenge to restore, especially given the tiny world he works in.
"The sheer size of the components of these watches is mind-boggling. I mean, I use a loop for some of my work, and sometimes that's not enough. You have to get on the microscope. Literally. I bought a scientific microscope so that I can look at what I'm actually doing on these things."
But with all his tools and talent, it's his accompanying commentary that viewers can't seem to get enough of.
"I've had some people say you're like the Bob Ross of watches. And I'll tell you, that is such a big compliment to me,” Mitchell said. “Because if you watch Bob Ross's stuff, it's never about the painting, you just wanted to hang out with him because he was cool. And his voice was funny and stuff like that."
In a world where everything is digital and disposable, Marshall Sutcliffe has found success restoring pieces from our past.
"If people keep watching, I'm gonna keep making them."

I am a retired biological scientist with long experience of looking at tiny things through various kinds of microscopes ranging from the kind needed for watchmaking (dissection microscope) to high powered electron microscopes. So I rather miss not using them and recently came across a couple of old pocket watches in my drawer and then discovered Marshall on youtube. Marshall you are very inspiring and you have got me onto a new hobby for cold winter days when I can't be in the garden or the shed. My old university department has kindly given me some old dissection microscopes and I have a metal working lathe for making some of the tools I'll need. Many thanks from a British biologist in Japan !

I had the privilege of working for a certified watchmaker in the early 70's from the age of 12 to age 16. I learned how to work on baby Ben , big Ben alarm clocks, and pocket watches. Over the years I've lost touch with the trade. ( Lost art ). I will soon be retiring and thought of a good hobby/ possible money making sit down job, and watch repair sounds better all the time. I'm starting to get set up to do it again and I'm inspired by your work. It's rewarding to see some of your patience and completions. Never stop what you are doing, I get great reminders of things past. 👍👍

I never imagined I would want to watch someone take apart watches and put them back together, but in these often unpleasant times, it's comforting to find a channel with easy-going, well produced videos like this: mellow, peaceful visits with a personable craftsman who knows what he's doing, not only in watch repair, but in making watchable videos. Though it is Marshall's persona that makes them so interesting, they're never *about* him, always about the watch and the journey. It's a skill.

Before finding Wristwatch Revival on KZread I honestly didn't see the point in wristwatches anymore. I own a nice Oris that I never wear. And, I figured, with a clock on my phone, why wear a watch. After going down the rabbit hole on one watch repair journey after another with Marshal I have a new appreciation for the beauty, precision, and engineering talent necessary to create and maintain these tiny machines. I've actually started buying old watches on eBay, purchasing watchmaking tools, and am nearly ready to embark on my own watch repair adventures. Thank you Marshall, for introducing me to a new hobby that I love. I never would have guessed that, of all the scary and bizarre reasons to need a Geiger counter, old watches is why I now have one!

Hey Marshal, I've been a long time subscriber and I just realized when I saw your face on the news piece that I had never seen your face. I think for me, that means your content (voice, knowledge, steady handed tool use, pace and problem solving ) was 100% satisfying in and of itself. Your videos have helped me take excellent care of the watch I like to wear for years now and provided a background audio (like Bob Ross) for the work I do at my 9-5. My father just sassed away a couple of weeks ago but a couple of months before he died he gave me a small box of his old and not running watches. At the time I thought they were worthless old things that were ready for the bin. I'm glad I hung on to that box as I now consider all his old stuff to be precious items as far a sentimental value now that he's gone. I think I'll give them a bit of TLC and a cleaning as you have demonstrated so often. Thanks for you channel's content.

So proud of you, Marshall. Always been a watch enthusiast. I started binging repair videos during the pandemic and there's something very zen about seeing people doing their craft, etc. I stumbled upon WR channel by chance when it showed up as a recommendation while watching Primitive Technology channel (another fantastic zen-like channel) and I have been in this ride ever since. Now we finally get to match the face to the Bob Ross-like voice!

This guy is so incredibly talented and skillful that there are no words to describe his horological acumen. Blown away by his videos and his explanations...and yet being so modest. If I could achieve one-tenth of his skill and patience during one of my reassemblies, I'd be happy. So glad he's getting recognized. Clearly, the Red Baron of watch repair. Thank You Mr. Sutcliffe.
