The Ministry of Defence (MoD) can afford to waste no time, even as the oath taking ceremony has barely got over. A few critical issues require to be processed immediately. Among these, the most important was the nomination of the new Chief of Army Staff. The issue was obviously at the top the agenda of the MoD. Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi has been already cleared by the Appointments Committee for the post of COAS.
The Modi government has also to take a call on the new recruitment policy of the Armed Forces: Agnipath. The terms and conditions of the scheme have been found to be unduly harsh by aspirants and also veterans. We will possibly witness a more attractively packaged scheme.
Force modernization calls for a speedier procurement process and the government is expected to bring the issue under scrutiny and evolve procedures for faster acquisition cycles, and pushing the Strategic Partnership model.
Theatre/ Joint Committee are ready to take off. We will possibly witness some movement shortly.
Among other issues are DRDO reforms. If the mood in South Block is any clue, these will be pushed for speedy implementation.
A few geo-political issues pertaining to China, Pakistan and Maldives, were also discussed.
