In the old days, before people had more money, the only time they made these things was because it made Christmas special. The nuts would have fallen so they were plentiful, the sugar would have to be bought. Same with pumpkin and squash pies...and many other things we love at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We just don't know how hard times used to be.

Maple is a wonderful candy flavor for kids who are allergic to chocolate. Any time of year. Esp. Christmas, Easter and Halloween. When other kids are chomping chocolate by the handful. A natural food store in Seattle sells 'maple leaves' of maple & honey. They are pretty fawn brown color, in molds to look like real leaves. Better than M&Ms.

I love maple too. My mom made doll cakes of southern belles, ( Barbie size dolls ) I thought they were dorky, ( being a boy ) but they were beautiful. With all the icing flowers, and a hat , flower bouquet etc. She made them for little girls birthdays. The girls got a doll out of it after the cake was eaten.😋

Yes, I would like this maple and pecan candy. My grandmother made certain things every Christmas that were so special to our family. She made the cherry, pecan, coconut type candy dipped in chocolate. It was so good! She also made the date and rice crispy candy. The food at Christmas in our family was something to behold. Everything was made from scratch right down to fruitcake (soaked in liquor/rum/??? for weeks) and coconut cake made from coconut that my grand paw would crack with a hammer and dig the meat out of the shell. My grandmother would cook/prepare foods for weeks for Christmas plus sew clothes for every grandchild.

I love maple syrup, so I would probably substitute the pure maple syrup for corn syrup. For my taste, the more mapley it tastes, the better😄 I believe I am going to have to try this recipe since I love maple & pecans! I use pure maple syrup as a substitute for sugar in oatmeal also. Sugar is so bad for us & I have read that pure maple syrup is suppose to be a cancer preventative.

That was my Granny too! She made some of my favorite dishes for the holidays! None of the recipes with à similar name compare to her particular recipe. Some of my favorites were Candied Sweet Potatoes, “7” layer cake (which always more like 13-15 tiny layers!) and the frosting for that cake. The cake itself had a dash of lemon flavoring and I believe it had almond as well. The frosting included Hershey’s cocoa powder and it was very thick and it hardened almost like fudge. It was heavenly! If you are lucky enough to get your loved one’s recipes or train to cook with them consider yourself blessed! It is a real treasure!

I used to help my wife make candy rolls like that. I would make them into a log like you do but roll them in plastic wrap instead of wax paper. I would make the plastic wrap two or three inches longer than the roll. I would roll it up long ways then grab it by the ends and spin it over and over. That would tighten up the roll and make it rounder. Besides that it was fun to do!

I believe candy and sweets where only made at holidays because the cost of sugar and other ingredients was expensive and it was considered a special treat. Now we eat way too much sugar and sweets and are over weight. We should go back to just have these things at holidays. I love this no cook candy, you don't have to worry about it reaching the right stage on a candy thermometer.

My mom made lots of goodies just at Christmas time. My favorites were buckeyes and fudge. At work, others would bring theirs in, I’d tell them that I was too stuffed to eat anymore, I knew they wouldn’t taste like mama’s, I didn’t want to hurt their feelings. Thanks so much for sharing your recipes, and the stories that go with them. I think I‘ll make some p-nut pinwheel for my grandchildren. I am so hungry! Merry Christmas to y’all 🎄

My Mom made seafoam candy a couple of times when I was young. I remember it so good because it was my favorite. Hers was different than yours by she use the maple (my favorite) But black walnuts and she build it using the drop ball gage candy cooking. Next, she drop it by Tablespoons on wax paper. That stuff just melted in your mouth but Mama said it settled on her hips so I don't remember too much after that. Love this and will add it to my list for Christmas treats.

As I watched you rolling the logs in the pecans I automatically thought of the pecan rolls that you buy from the store. But as you were talking about candies, 1 memory that came to mind, was my mama making the divinity candy as a little girl.

That looks really good! I love maple pecan! We don't do candies very often. Usually we have a mess of appetizers, liver pate, a cheese plate, fruit, and sometimes candied nuts. I know my great grandma and her family would make some candies and fudge. Although when I was growing up we'd have holidays potluck style and usually grandma brought the pies.

If you used Karo syrup it is not high fructose corn syrup that is in so many things at the store from bread to ketchup. That's the stuff so many people, including me, try to avoid. My granny used to make mints with cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter flavoring and mint flavoring. Sometimes she added yellow color to part of a batch and formed them into calla lilies. They were gorgeous. I have made them maybe twice, both times for wedding receptions.

I am just now seeing this video. I just HAVE to try this. It looks so yummy! I don't know about everywhere else, but when I was growing up people only had the extras to make special recipes around Christmas time. They were too expensive to purchase other times of the year. It had to be for something really special -- like Christmas. Now, if a person had their on pecan trees, etc., it would probably make a big difference. I remember loving the food at Christmas. One of the things I looked forward to so much. Thanks for sharing this. I truly appreciate it.

I'm going to try your recipe this wkend. Really sounds delicious. I know what a good Southern cook you are so I want to share a recipe with you. The recipe is called Olive Surprize Balls Take a jar of green olives & drain them well. When olives are dry take out a package of cream cheese & make to slices longwise., then make cuts across cheese to make individual squares. Have a bowl of chop pecans ready. Take cream cheese square & mold it around olives. When completely covered with cream cheese then roll in Chop pecans. Refrigerate until cooled off & slice into. People just love them because they taste do good & are different. You can also substitute marachino cherries for the olives, make a pretty delicious finger food. Thank you again for all your good recipes, you are appreciated!
