My reading of the Cryptic/Shadesmar death rattle was that the Silent Gatherers ignorantly killed a budding Lightweaver. Great video once again Christian!

While everyone says the first quote is with kaladin and moash, I think its predicting a future where Dalinar is serving Odium (Odium the one who killed his promises) and fighting Kaladin, he will raise his hand and the storm father will respond. I like this idea alot for a real book 5 prediction.

Yep I like this more considering all is wirhdrawn from Dalinar if he became Odium's champ. Funny thing is, this is also applicable for Kaladin, Adolin, or Moash.

Your almost throwaway line about "whatever Kaladin becomes" struck a chord with me... Is all the suffering he has been put through "training" him to withstand the sort of suffering that a new Herald might need, in order to renew the Oathpact?

Heralds always gave me "I have no mouth and I must scream" vibes. They'd be better off permanently knifing the fuse who refuse to coexist

Don’t remind me of kaladin jumping down into the storm to commit suicide and meeting tien. 😢 😭 still haven’t gotten over that.

It obviously takes a lot of planning and forethought to plant these little story seeds so far ahead of time, it always impresses me when the chapter title lines up so nicely. Great point about the first person point of view Death Rattles seeming to be especially important ones, by the way.

I got a little shiver when you started talking about Kaladin's Ideal Moment from RoW and that that was a scene Brando Sando has been keeping in his back pocket for 2 decades just waiting for the perfect moment to put that to page. Really gives more weight to the death rattles for me.

i think the "i stand against the one who saved my life. I protect the one that killed my promises. I raise my hand. The storm responses" can be a deathrattle about Dalinar protecting odium, acting against humanity and maybe still being able to use his powers from the stormfather, or can be the stormfather "responding" to his acts. we should search for some "chapter title" conections there.

I can't wait until the world starts to recognize the brilliance of this series and watch your subs blow up! Some LotR and ASoIaF channels get insane views and it's only a matter of time for Stormlight lore as well.

As I was watching, there is a little part of me thinking that it almost seems like it's pointing to Kaladin taking up the shard of Honor. Then I started thinking about Harmony and the thought of him picking up Cultivation as well. Then I had the crazy thought of what if he ends up taking the shards of Honor AND Odium.

The last one is interesting. Up to now the destructive force has been water and wind via storms. If this is the end of Book 5, then it is introduction of fire as a new destructive force. Sounds right. Would that pave the way for future destructive forces in Books 6+ for earth as a destructive force through earthquakes (or Roshar-quakes)? Very interesting.

Great video! 9:18 it’s me every time I read Part 5 of a Stormlight book. It would be great if you could keep the death rattle on frame (maybe in a corner) as you discuss it. I think it’s better to keep reading it as you talk about it.

I already know some of these, but I still got chills every time you say what each death rattle was talking about. And checking the chapter titles was super clever! Can't wait for the next ones :)

The last death rattle is from the future victory of the Parshendi "They´ll burn as we have" might be a reference to a Fused suffering in Braize and now sending the humans there (literally or metaphorically)

I love listening to you talk about the death rattles. It's so much fun and it's also extremely satisfying knowing what a death rattle means (especially if chapter titles match)!

For the last dethrattle you talked about i think it's referring to the time after the everstorm and fused return and before the end of RoW. The fused were stuck on braize which I think the "burn like we did" could be referring to. Especially if this deathrattle was in WoK or WoR then it would be perfect foreshadowing!

Bro, you are putting in the work here. I had always thought that the Death Rattles were not just random blubber of a dying person. I am glad that you are making these connections and helping the community better understand how Sando writes.

I'm imagining Sanderson watching this series and thinking, "Not 100% correct, but this guy is really unraveling the path of foreshadowing that I laid. RAFO".

I hope that if we get Stormlight screen adaption they lean hard into the horror of the Unmade, Death Rattles, and Taravangian's creepy-as-heck blood farm

I think it's really important to note that _all_ of the Death Rattles are spoken in present tense. Except for a very few, which are in future tense. Even those, though, are indicative of a present mood: 'He must pick up the fallen title.' This hints that the method by which Moelach offers the visions is by touching the Spiritual Realm (the one Realm without a temporal component). Which, granted, is not an earthshattering revelation, though it does hint the power works on the same basis as other foretelling powers (like the Shards' abilities or atium). This _suggests_ that anyone protected against future sight, particularly Odium's, should not be the PoV of a Death Rattle. By end of RoW, that would be Renarin and Rlain.

I think my favourites/ the ones I like to think about the most are the ones with the weeping/rain and child motifs/themes. There's definitely something fishy in those. Check out the death rattles from chapters 3,6,52,56,57. There are also other running themes of death and blood in them making them all the more ominous. I also believe there a good case to be made for Odium winning in book 5, the most obvious one being the chapter 11 death rattle. There's also the death rattle from WoR, where he exclaims "the night will reign,..." aka Night of Shadows, the name associated with the True Desolation and the Everstorm. Some of the ones I mentioned above could also tie into this. There's also the one from chapter 62 that has yet to be resolved

What if Honor is not truly dead, and Kaladin eventually becomes Honor (like Taravangian becomes Odium). Since Honor can transcend consciousnous through time (like with the visions), Kaladin / Honor’s life experience is reverberated through Death Rattles.

I'm a few months late, but I'd like to join the discussion =) About that last rattle you mentioned, could it refer to the singers regaining their land when the everstorm returned? It's a bit weak, I admit, but it could be

Just an errant thought, but the books are very specific about the Everstorm not having a stormwall. Ominous.

With he fact that Sanderson has planned ten books for the Stormlight Archives I am highly excited to be on this reading adventure. So far I am completely in love with Characters Shallan, and Sly. However, Kaladin has to be the one that I can relate to in so many ways.

I haven't read RoW yet, it is going to arrive next week. After I've read it, I'm gonna join you

I think that the last death rattle is talking about the Fused because "as we've burned before" or whatever the specific quote is - that sounds like Braize. I'm not sure Ashyn was burned per se. (especially since BrandoSando has talked about a magic system there that has to do with disease?) But to add my little prediction -I have a feeling Kaladin is going to be sent to Braize.

I wonder if Kaladin will end up holding the shard of honor. Mind you I am new to the stormlight archive but i am up to date. Plus he does remind me of the herald of war in terms of origins

I think the spiritual realm is just a list of past and future chapter titles

I think the burning death rattle might be about heralds winning against the fused too, can go both ways

I feel like the second death rattle wouldn't be as simple as just looking into Shadesmar. I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with Shallan or maybe even Wit being the healer and them teleporting into Shadesmar. I don't know... And I agree that the last one can be either about the past or the future, but if it is about the past, then I'd say it would be moreso about the conquest of Urithiru that happened in Rhythm of War. Victory atop a mountain? Takeover of homes and farmland? I think it would fit. (The one thing I'm not sure about the place that is hollow and forlorn, but those might be the Shattered Plains). It might about the future too though, like you said. Maybe Stormlight 5 ends with Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, Adolin, etc becoming the new Heralds? Like in exchange for peace between humans and singers? (the other ones are spot on, though!)

I think the last one refers to Parshendi/Fused taking Alethkar

The burning death rattle, for me, is a singer perspective post everstorm.

The next time i read through this series i am going to pay a lot more attention to chapter titles.

The videos about death rattles are excellent! But I have a question, what about « the musings of L on the 1st day of the last 10 days » does it not indicate that they will lose? Note: I am new to the work of The amazing Brandon Sanderson, I just finished Rhythm of war 👌🏽.

7:28 Small correction-I think as people die, they transition between all three realms and see into them. Seeing into the future is a thing of the Spiritual Realm, which is where a lot of the death rattles must come from. So this rattle is odd, but it's odd because it seems like they're looking into the Cognitive Realm rather that the Spiritual Realm.

My theory: the humans win, but T'Odium somehow finds a loop hole to where Dalinar is still going to become his slave. Time, break for second arc, Odium comes back 1,000 years later or whatever the deal was and uses Dalinar to conquer roshar and prepare for the "real war".. Probably am wrong, but I trust in Sanderson.

7:44 I don't think this one is that simple. I think this is foreshadowing for Shallan when she will most likely swear her next truth. This awfully resembles the situation where Kabsal has poisoned Shallan and Jasnah had to soulcast her blood. It seems to me that the similar situation will take place, but Shallan will be the one doing soulcasting. I suspect that she will have to say her next truth to soulcast the blood properly, but to be honest there are many other things that could happen in such situation

Maybe that wasn’t actually a death rattle but Pattern checking out the death hospital we know he likes exploring

Have you mentioned this death rattle yet? "He must pick it up, the fallen title! The tower, the crown, and the spear!" -Collected on Vevahach 1173, 8 seconds pre-death, by the Silent Gatherers. Subject was a prostitute of unknown background - This hasn't happened yet. I think this is Kaladin taking over Herald Jezrien's spot. The fallen title is the king of the Heralds, herald of windrunners ( the fallen title and the crown). Kaladin is our main spearman (the spear). I am not sure what the tower refers to. I wonder if it's the original tower in the Way of Kings where Bridge Four saves Dalinar and his men. When Jezrien died, the first thing I thought was - "oh Kaladin is going to take his spot" Also, it was Dunny's death when Moash saved Kaladin. Youthful faced Dunny - he always stood out to me. I remember how furious Kaladin was and ordered all of Bridge Four to go save the other injured bridgemen outside of their group. Wow...weirdly enough (such a strange coincidence), the death rattle I mentioned above is the epigraph to the chapter in WoK, Chapter 53 called "Dunny"

Maybe... K-Rattle?

I actually disagree with the assessment of the first death rattle so far, I think "all is withdrawn from me" and "I raise my hand. The storm responds." I think this is actually Moash's point of view approaching the battle of champions. All is withdrawn from me is his emotions, guilt, etc. he feels nothing. The one who killed his promises is Odium, Kaladin saved his life (even Dalinar could be the one who has saved him), and the everstorm responds to him. That's just the feeling I get from this, although the death rattles are so vague they can be connected to multiple moments, that's the problem. I think Brandon is a master at subtlety with his foreshadowing and the chapter headings are just so brazen compared to his normal subtle nods that I think it's a red herring. His foreshadowing tends to have a LONG time before it pays off. "Have you seen me" doesn't really get confirmed until Oathbringer. I don't know I just have a lot of thoughts.

What if every single future death rattle is of a new radiant. And every old death rattle is of a connection to the old radiance

Thanks! I definitely do take note of those annotations and they help inform me on how relevant the death rattles are. Just in the nature of keeping the videos snappy I don’t get into them that much. We definitely talk about them more in the live streams!
