Searching for gold in South Africa's abandoned mines | Unreported World

We follow the young men coming to South Africa and risking their lives in the abandoned gold mines of Durban Deep. The gold mine is an hour outside Johannesburg and was closed down 12 years ago, after commercial mining companies moved on. Now illegal miners descend half a kilometre underground, through make-shift tunnels, and use explosives to blow apart the rock in search of gold. There are dangers both inside and outside the mines, local gangs control the area, and rapes and murders are now commonplace.

This is a sad reality for most of us South Africans. The large number of mines in south africa has not necessarily resulted in an increase in the standard of living for most mine workers as most of these mines are foreign-owned. The decreasing commodity prices makes this industry a not so lucrative one as it once was, compounded by the policy uncertainty and corruption in south africa. this escalates the rate of mine closures which is also expensive to safely close down and convert into a garbage dumping area so most mines just leave them as they are. south africa, with one of the highest unemployment rates (27%) and a country with one of the youngest population- average age 27(debatable)- unemployed citizens living in mine towns try their luck I these abandoned mines. This creates gangs and rivals which can turn out to be deadly. I'm proud of *UNREPORTED WORLD* for reporting this in the most truthful and factual manner.

That and the fact that depending on the video at the time the "Journalists" they use seem very judgmental of whats going on. Like when they did the Bush meat video in Africa, sure they shouldn't have to eat it but don't fucking give the people you're working/interviewing with that passive aggressive attitude. Unless the documentary involves Asian women or Marijuana then the VICE journalists seem all for it.

Even if they feel like they can’t physically do anything to change it, they still can/do hurt emotionally & yes, they may even be brought to tears... especially in the face of such despair & the extremely emotional testimonial from that girl. Some people still care about other people - from one red-blooded human being to another & it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference what color anyones skin is. Furthermore, being a compassionate & kind person is never something to antagonize & lash out at someone for. Outside the mining village we lived in, there is massive billboard that displays the number of consecutive shifts worked with no fatalities. We would always hear of zama zamas going down certain shafts, there was so security. I went on a call out with my father to fix 1 of the hoppers in middle of night and while I sat in the truck, all I could notice was the amount of shiny/glittering rocks a long the hopper tracks. I mentioned it to my father's work buddy that night and he told me how people get shot by security for picking up those shiny rocks.

Bravo! 👏 Bravo! 👏 GREAT DOCUMENTARY!!! Really great work. I love how passionate the host is about his craft. I love the care and love he showed while doing the story. I loved that he actually cried with the young girl that was in so much pain, and clearly still suffering so much from the terrible trauma she had undergone. It felt good to see such a humane reaction to hearing her story of going through what has to be one of the most difficult and most evil things anyone could ever go through, being not only raped, but raped and brutalized by a gang of heartless men. The fear she must deal with from going through this, then also not seeing any sort of justice served afterwards makes this so much worse. Then having to live in fear, and also not having the ability financially to leave or even to stay and somehow protect yourself is unimaginable. I also would not know what to say if I was there listening to her tell her gut wrenching story. As hard as this is to watch, those of us that live in more privileged parts of the world benefit greatly by watching and learning about the incredible hardships that so many people suffer around the world. The more we learn their points of view, we will, God Willing, be able to increase our compassion and understanding for our fellow human brothers and sisters around the world, and the more we will take action to help those in need. 🌍🕊❤️🌈✊🏾☮️ #LoveOneAnother #Peace #Humanity #KeepYourEyesOpen #StandUpForYourRights #ProtectTheInnocent

I hope that the young lady was referred for trauma debriefing by the producers. She was really brave to tell her story. A thoughtful, informative and quality piece - I subscribed to the channel. Some good comments, but I can't help but be put off by the seemingly ubiquitous presence of trolls and ignorant, oversimplified and closed minded comments and replies aimed at stirring, blaming or reproducing discrimination.

To my dear brothers Freedom and friends these are good guys just trying to survive in a cruel world, they are just doing what they got to do, like they say when the world gives u nothing u take what u can. My question is to u REPORTED WORLD do you render any type of assistance to these people or u just profit from them? If u do would like to know how they have progressed.

I can’t believe that outside of your home RIGHT NOW these hard working people are under ground looking for gold...
