Let’s not ignore the fact that politicians, in this case Jacinda Ardern, get to resign and walk away without any accountability for their disastrous policies and decisions. Politicians continue to draw their Government Salaries while creating politics which are NOT designed to help people, but to garner votes. Bet things would be different if it was their own money on the line.

This happened in Australia when PM Morrison's National government.Decided to introduce Robo Debt.Designed to track down those grossly over paid from welfare payments. Many were falsely accused of owing 1000's.And were so traumatized that some committed suicide. The government eventually stopped the practice. And those wrongly accused were compensated. As you mentioned governments responsible for these decisions. Are never held accountable or go to jail. And this is not the first time a Australian government policy has cost lives.
