Sean Penn Defeats Mickey Rourke | Best Actor Oscar 2009

In 2009, Mickey Rourke had a good shot at winning the Best Actor Academy Award for The Wrestler, but then he lost to Sean Penn for Milk. In this video, I break down that year's fascinating Oscar race and discuss the reasons why Penn defeated Rourke for the award. #oscars #academyawards #bestactor #seanpenn #mickeyrourke #brianrowevideo

I recently re-watched it and he is great in it! I was also struck by how eerily similar The Wrester and The Whale are. Aronofsky did highly similar plots with a different type of character but both involve body abuse, re-connecting with a daughter, extreme trauma, and another spoiler.

I would have given it to Rourke personally, but Penn's win made a LOT of sense! Also, I think the craziness of what was going on with Prop 8 might have edged some Academy members to send a few votes Penn's way as well. It truly would have been a tough call if I was checking the ballot.

Sean Penn is one of my favorite actors but both times he won, there was a performance that I preferred (Murray and Rourke). In my opinion, he should have won the Oscar for Dead Man Walking, my favorite performance of his. Since we are talking about The Wrestler, I would love to see a video on how Marisa Tomei went from being an Oscar punchline for her surprise victory in My Cousin Vinny to a respected 3-time Oscar nominee.

sean penn deserves his loss in dead man walking to nicolas cage win in leaving las vegas. that year cage swept on almost all critic awards (los angeles film critics association, new york film critics circle, national board of review, national society of film critics.), plus the golden globe and sag award. there is no way in hell that anybody in the best actor category would upset cage that year.

Both Milk and The Wrestler were two great dramas released in 2008. It’s my personal favorite Sean Penn performance as he completely disappears into the role of Harvey Milk. While The Wrestler was a phenomenal comeback for Mickey Rourke. Both equally phenomenal performances that I would’ve been happy with either of them winning. But if I were to give the slight edge, I would choose Mickey Rourke.

I was a teen when they come out so didn’t quite follow the Oscars but I do recall this year somewhat and Slumdog and those two films being talked about. But I still haven’t seen Milk since it’s not in any streaming platform in my country and I never hear people talk of it now, outside just weather Penn should have won or not. I’ve always thought Christian Bale should have been nominated for The Dark Knight. I think he gave a performance worthy of a nomination at the very least, and in my mind it would have been cool to see Bale and Heath Ledger win portraying two of the most iconic comic book characters of all time. I am also biased as Bale is one of my favorite actors and his portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman is my favorite so I won’t pretend not to have any sort of bias. But looking at those nominated for Best Actor, I do think Mickey Rourke gave the best performance that year. Sean Penn was very good in Milk, but of those nominated I’ve always seen Rourke as giving the best performance of those five. Just a captivating performance all the way around. I think Penn should have won for Dead Man Walking as I see that as his best performance. Thank you for talking about this particular race Brian, keep up the great work and take care!

Even though it aglines with your number 4 reason why Mickey Rourke didn’t win best actor Oscar. I think one of the factors that he didn’t win is he agreed with to complete in a special celebrity wrestling match against Chris Jericho at Wrestlemania 25 & his repsentives warned him to not announce the planned match during award season campaign because they worried that it might effect his Oscar chances. But during a red carpet interview at 2009 SAG Awards, Mickey Rourke spill the beans of the planned match. They have to do damage control about it when he appear on Larry King Live for not only about the film but sort of debunked the planned match with Chris Jericho on the show.

  • @got2bjosh

    @got2bjosh

    Жыл бұрын

Burstyn was phenomenal in Requiem, but she already had an Oscar and her film was much darker, tougher viewing which could've turned off some voters. Julia was coming off a decade of box office hits and turned out a very strong performance in a more palatable and successful film. Roberts win for Brockovich continued the 00s trend of actors winning Oscars for playing real life people. She wore that iconic Valentino dress and gave a great, albeit long, speech. Roberts win has held up well over time and she's received additional nominations showing she was never a one trick pony.

Parasite was close to breaking this mole but none of the cast members was unfortunately not nominated mainly bc the American film studio behind parasites promoted it as bongo joon-ho’s international breakthrough and didn’t promote the cast members in any major film awards besides a Best cast award at SAG

Its massive success at the Oscars is part of a long line of grand historical epics that the Academy loves to reward. Asians very rarely received Oscars for their acting, but it does happen and is changing. SM is a great film that was made well over a decade ago before the cultural conversation around diversity and representation reached the full rolling boil we know today. The Academy has made important changes to improve its processes and voting body demographics which are now beginning to bear fruit.

I don’t know about Sean Penn for that performance. I felt he peaked with Mystic River. I think there was more good will toward him that season that detoured Mickey’s chances at victory among the ones mentioned in the video. Even back then, I did take issue with overtly stereotyped gay flamboyance that Diego Luna portrayed, I didn’t quite agree that Josh Brolin deserved his nom as the homophobic politician that snaps or agree with the massive white washing. It’s SF, and there weren’t many Latinos and Black queer men? Also, the token lesbian? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a solid film, but it just made me think more about it after the credits rolled on how it utilized it’s time on making sure we knew they had sex than really digging into what he was trying to accomplish. I guess I was always taken back that it was Sean Penn playing a character than becoming him. Somehow I got hints of I Am Sam in his vocal imitation. Just like his first win, it didn’t open up opportunities rather than validate his career whereas Mickey Rourke’s authentic and quiet power behind a grizzled and beaten exterior was his time to shine, but if you don’t quite have the backing of the Academy because of your antics and bad behavior, it only solidifies defeat. I guess Aronofsky has directed one male and one female best actor/actress winners later on with Natalie Portman and now Brenden Fraser. Kate’s win over Meryl was weird because of category fraud and, in my opinion, for the wrong film. If I were to choose Meryl’s 3rd win, it would have been for Doubt. The Iron Lady was a great Streep performance, but I preferred Doubt.

Mickey doing work with WWE at that time to promote the movie may have hurt his chances as well. Pro Wrestling in the late 2000s was still being frowned upon (it's gotten much better now) and voters may have hated that Rourke would work with WWE at that time. Even his management team hated the idea and felt it would ruin his Oscar chances.

I remember that year, Rourke was never going to beat Penn. Many thought his performance in Milk was even better than Mystic River which was largely seen as making up for Dead Man Walking. Rourke may have had a strong comeback, but people like to see consistency and momentum when it comes to rewarding the Oscar. If prior track record of good work isn't there then the nomination is your prize. Plus, Rourke's bad plastic surgery didn't help. Penn was always the stronger, more versatile actor who had a better track record of giving great performances.

Mickey was robbed by politics. This Was the 1st attempt of the Oscars to show gay appreciation, same they did often in the past with other social issues. I've seen both movies at the time and there is no way (although subjective) that Penn's performance (then cherished after ignored for years) was better than Rourke's. Another political snafu from the Oscars. Great video as usual!

I can't much to the pro wrestling stuff already mentioned here, but that probably had a lot to do with Mickey Rourke's loss, but I have never seen Milk so that part I can't say anything about, I will say that The Wrestler is by far the best movie about pro wrestling ever because at least it doesn't treat the pro wrestling fan base like idiots like that movie WCW had called Ready To Rumble does. The argument could be made that The Wrestler was a niche movie which it was so it's appeal was never going to be broad anyway. Pro wrestling has a lot of nueasance when it's trying. WWE is currently doing their best storyline in 20 years at least with The Bloodline angle, a storyline that has had a lot of twists and turns better then some Hollywood movies have. That storyline is most Emmy worthy, but it definitely is. Hell the Bloodline storyline has been going on for three years now, WWE tends to drop storylines really fast with no explanation. I will say that Mickey Rourke not winning this gave wrestling fans an amazing mini-return for Rickey "The Dragon" Steamboat who most definitely was the star of that would be WrestleMania match that was the replacement for that Mickey Rourke vs. Chris Jericho match, which probably wouldn't have been as good. Good video

That Sean penn won the Oscar seemed good to me, he gave a great performance in Milk although I still feel sad for Mickey rourke. What ended up costing Mickey rourke the Oscar was that WWE loves to put celebrities in their Storylines and they wanted to take advantage of the Movie and Mickey rourke's great performance for Wrestlemania 25. Mickey rourke rejected it at first but when he said he would appear at Wrestlemania 25 he immediately lost his Oscar. At least the Oscar fell into good hands. Sean penn deserved it too.

I liked Frank Langella in ‘Frost/Nixon’ but I was never able to get past the fact he didn’t really look or sound like Richard Nixon. He was always just an actor trying to be somebody else. Overall, I liked the film, but Langella’s skills as an actor weren’t enough to overcome the fact he barely had a passing resemblance to the real man. I still think the best performance of Nixon was Anthony Hopkins’ in ‘Nixon.’ When it came to Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke, my vote would have gone to Penn with Rourke a very close second. I bet the accountants had to count the votes in the Best Actor category at least twice that night; that’s how close I think it was… Sadly, though, Rourke has never again achieved that greatness…

Condon won the BAFTA because of course they supported an Irish movie. Hsu was too new and comparatively unknown to win. JLC deserved her win.

But unless the field is weak, where a newcomer might win, the voters take into account if they respect you for your body of work, and how well you play the Hollywood game, along with the performance.
