One of the girls I went to school with her Grandma had a heart attack or a stroke on the toilet and she fell blocking the door. So the emergency responders couldn't get to her in time and she unfortunately passed away. My mum works in the hospital and told me the same thing you said, that strokes, heart attacks and fainting is VERY common on the toilet.

And my period always makes it so much worse too, like I sometimes lose control of my balance so it's totally up to physics whether or not I stay standing, and once I even totally blacked out and woke up on my knees and elbows with my head hanging like a minute or so later, it was scary! I used to take iron supplements, but w my adhd I just kept forgetting to take them and I eventually just gave up on it. thankfully ever since I started testosterone my periods have gotten lighter and less frequent, so the fainting has gotten a lot less severe😅

I hope they see this because otherwise it will be a tale for nothing 😩 and boy is it a story. When I was like 10, there was one night where I was really sick. I woke up in the middle of the night really needing to use the bathroom. Unfortunately, I was still half asleep. Mind you, my bathroom was literally 5 feet from my bedroom. I decided to stand up, stand against my wall, and I shit myself LMFAO and I was so shocked in my half asleep state that somehow ??? It got on my wall ???? AND THEN I WALKED ALL THE WAY DOWN THE STAIRS TO MY BACK DOOR, SHIT STILL IN MY PANTS, STEPPED ONTO THE PORCH, and,,,dropped it on the concrete 😔. The next morning my mom asked me about it and I blamed it on the dogs. I don’t think she believed me.

I've only fainted once and don't particularly know why, hasn't happened again, but it's just like that. Heat shrieks across your body like an instant fever, feeling off, vision starts clouding like you stood up too fast (except I was already standing). I was just gonna let it pass and my vision clear up, but there is genuinely no recollection of the actual fall. That's all I remember before waking up on the floor, somehow having thread the needle between the table, bins, and fridge in our small kitchen, and with the most sore ass I have ever had. Absolute beast must have taken the brunt of the fall. It's very strange though, waking up like that and not knowing why, I just called out "....hello...?" to my parents in the next room who heard none of it.

In high school and college, very rarely, I would get weird moments where my stomach would start to hurt really bad, so I would go to the bathroom and not be able to poop OR puke, and then the world would start to get fuzzy and I would get a ringing in my ears that would muffle every other sound, and two times it led to me passing out on the toilet. Fortunately I just slumped forward but didn't fall, so I didn't get hurt. I talked to a doctor about it and she was just like "Yeah that can happen to young people sometimes, if it keeps happening when you get older then it's a problem" which is NOT very helpful. It hasn't happened in the last few years though, so seems like she was right.

Weirdly enough, the shine and shade of Séan's black eye suits him perfectly Also the only time I fainted was on purpose. As a kid I watched a dare/challenge show I think it was Wouters en Waes (With Koen Wouters and Tom Waes) or something like it. And they did an episode on fainting and who could hold out the longest and all throughout the episode they said not to do it. First thing I did is do it. I remember the pain of hitting my head on a desk edge (I was fine) and suddenly standing near the railing to the stairs.

I've no clue how I managed to find a seat with my vision fading to black, my ears rang and then went quiet, and I lost all sense of which way is up. When I came to, the bus was nearly to my stop. I hopped off the bus, walked into work still very disoriented and asked to be driven to the hospital.

Same! But I think I unconsciously developed a habit of going on my tip toes and leaning forwards from experiencing presyncope so much when I was younger 🤔. The extra interthoracic pressure from going to the toilet (especially in a tensed/squat position) helps stop the POTS striking 😅. I nearly never faint luckily because I'm so used to compensating to avoid it when I experience presyncope since I've had to do that most of my life and it started off mild and got gradually worse... if I feel faint because something external has triggered it, my body automatically tries to compensate and it usually works 😅. Or the shock/adrenaline rush from starting to faint and fall kicks in (feels similar to a hypnogogic jerk?) and wakes me up before I fully collapse 💀. I'm way more likely to actually pass out if I'm having an episode that's getting worse and I start to lay down because there isn't that jolt to stop it 🤔. I did once nearly fully pass out drying myself after a shower, I was leaned over drying my legs (big mistake 🥲) and as I was standing up again the faintness hit super hard and I started to fall over the edge of the bath 😳. Thankfully I came to, mid-fall - enough to stick my arms out and stop me hitting my head (I think because my head got low enough to get blood again)... I still ended up in a heap on the floor, but it was super scary because I was falling further than you would on level ground and the bath edge was in the way which I didn't want to fall on... and if I'd not been able to stick my arms out, the bathtub would've made me double over and slam my head straight into the stone tile floor 🥲. I'm way more careful in the shower now and actually sit down for one most of the time 😅. I've fainted other times because of injuring myself, things like nosebleeds and any cut that bleeds a lot can make me black out with no warning, but working on my overall anxiety has helped me grip onto reality just enough to sit down 😂. I do think POTS havers develop a kinda concerning skill of being able to somewhat function while in the kinda... consciousness limbo that happens during an episode if it isn't (yet) at a level where you _have_ to lie down 😅. I've had episodes where my body is compensating _just_ enough to keep me barely conscious and able to keep upright, but my self-awareness is too low to realise what's going on and I bounce between barely conscious and slipping into unconsciousness... my HR stays high and is around 120-150bpm in episodes like that so it's really not good, but I do manage to reach a point where I'm aware enough that I feel very tired and sleepy, and recognise that I need to lie down because I think I need to take a nap... it's not quite the right train of thought but it results in doing the right thing at least 😅. And I do get sleepy af after long episodes and need to nap once my HR has calmed down again 🫠.

I have also had a vasovagal response when I did the 2021"Paqui one chip challenge." I ate the chip and it was spicy or whatever, but a half an hour later, after all the spice had long subsided, I started to feel this sharp pain in the middle of my chest, and my head started feeling really flush. All of the sudden I start getting tunnel vision and memory loss like I'm about to pas out, and get insanely hot and start taking off all my clothes. My brother was in the same room, and i tried to ask for help, but forgot how breathing worked, so i didn't have any air to ask for help so I as just on the floor in my underwear grasping at the air. Eventually I took a breath and got some food in me, and it all went away. Definitely one of the weirder experiences in any life. I learned not to eat only an insanely spicy thing on an empty stomach or the second it passes out of your stomach... your body has a strange time.

I live with Vasovagal Syncope and it's the same experience but my brain is just overly dramatic about what it considers stress so hearing this had me balling hahaha. I'm part of the very fortunate percentage that actually doesn't pass out completely, but I can catch myself losing my vision and balance, sitting down with my head between my knees. Happened once when I tried contacts and realized glasses were a better bet for me.

I have a vasovagal syncope response basically every time I have blood drawn! It can get triggered by tons of different things, but by far the funniest time was when I was trying to explain to the phlebotomist drawing my blood that day that I "didn't like needles and usually need to-" and she stuck me mid sentence! lol! Took a normal amount of blood, I went so white she laid me on the dirty ass ground, I passed out, and she said to my face- "You can let us know and next time we'll put you in a room with a bed!" hahahahaha.

It's kinda scary that I've had a parallel experience to Seán's fainting episode at multiple times in my life. Granted each time was only ever due to the fact that I have a utereus and the utereuses in my family have a vendetta against us. All I'm gonna say is that I was in the exact same position, sans the spicy food and volcano bits. My mother was the one to find me most times, usually on the floor, whenever I've narrowly avoided concussing myself. I mean, I'm glad I'm not the only person that's happened to, but shit, maybe *I* should see a doctor too. I didn't realise fainting from that sort of thing was that common. At least I'm not alone.

When I lived with my old bass player in the dorms, I had just gotten done at the gym. I stood there in my stupid pants and thought "ill just get a bit of gas out and get on with my day" What I had mistaken for gas turned out to be a bomb that fired at a velocity I had not thought possible until this moment. I looked down in panic. Our dorm did not have a bathroom in it, so I had to go up and down the hall at 7 AM in the dark to get paper towels and soap until I eventually went downstairs to the lobby to get proper cleaning supplies. After 20+ minutes of cleaning, dispensing and removing my war crime from our living quarters I proceeded to get on with my day. Later that day as I was running late, my buddy who I had thought was sleeping in his bunk 2 feet away from this all had heard me cleaning and going back and forth the whole time. I learned this when he had asked with the most honest and supportive "hey man, is everything alright? You were in and out a lot this morning." I was so taken aback by his honesty and care, that I didn't have time to come up with a lie so I blurted out "I'm gonna be honest man...I pooped my pants." I then closed the door to his villainous cackling as I scurried in shame to my next class.

I remember when I had my first allergic reaction to Tree Nuts, it was back in high school when it happened. It was a school day and I grabbed some nuts to take to school because I didn’t had time for breakfast. I got to school and started to eat them, and I noticed that I started get the symptoms of a reaction, I then called my mom to pick me up. We got and I throw up in the toilet a few times, I went to lay down in my bed, I also took a Benadryl which I throw up. Before me and my mom went to the ER I got up to go to the bathroom incase I need to throw up some more, I past out in the middle of the hallway between my room and the bathroom. I woke up with my dog who was 5 months old at the time nudging me trying to me to wake up.

As someone with chronic vasovagal syncope (also known as neurocardiogenic syncope), yeah it's a thing! I did a research project on it a while back, basically it triggers the opposite of "fight or flight", which is "rest and digest". It causes a rapid decrease in blood pressure (mine drops to around 65mmHg/40mmHg from the normal 120/80). Some triggers other than digestive issues can be things like bright light, strong emotion, loud noise, and other significant sensory influxes. There's no consistent effective treatment for it. Often times you can get cold, clammy skin and dilated pupils as your muscles involuntarily relax. About 22% of people have had an episode of vasovagal syncope, but it's rare to have it chronically. One thing that helps is compression wear (especially in the legs so some big ol' squeeze socks) and increased sodium in the diet, and sugar or caffeine to quickly raise blood pressure for a short amount of time to get to a safe location where you can lie down for an extended period (soda is a lifesaver). It's put me in a wheelchair a few times and I like to keep a cane on my person in case it happens. One of the tests for it is the tilt-table test where they basically strap you to a table and wiggle you around to see if you pass out. There's about a 28% chance of amnesia for short episodes. Take care folks!

Hi Sean and Ethan. I fainted when I had a vassal vegal episode while on the toilet when I was in my 20's. I suffered from Endometriosis and was on my period when I had the same symptoms on the toilet as Sean. I didn't fall because my husband was with me because I was in so much pain. He said I just went limp and the last thing I remember is him yelling to my son to call 911. I came to and was still on the toilet and went to the hospital and was told that I had a Vassal vegal attack. I had a cyst the size of a grapefruit on my ovary that was causing the pain. 5 surgeries because of the Endometriosis and I have never had that happen again. Love the podcast! Love you guys! Stay leaky!!!

It is scary when you don't drink enough water and faint in your own bed. I did that and was lucky my mom found out then gave me water to drink. I learned from that mistake and that was years ago. Someone could have easily thought I was asleep and didn't actaully faint due to the lack of water. The worst headache I got in my entire life so far was from that too.

My shit story: I used to be incredibly constipated bc of my diet Maybe 7 years old, I went to poop (at a family party) and it was taking so much effort and strain I took off all my clothes. It finally started to come out after I was about to pass out, but it felt like a knife stab. I did the obvious thing, I sucked it back in and went back out to the party. Minutes later, I feel the poop again. I go back to the bathroom, still so painful I'm going to pass out. I give up and leave it in there. This happens over 10 times before I just give in and poop through tears! Thank you for letting me share

Since Sean asked. I have had a similar experience. A couple times actually. I was very sick and on the toilet with a similar struggle and all of a sudden I started feeling lightheaded and my brain said let’s lay down and I’m so glad I listened to it. I decided I’d rather possibly crap on the floor and have to clean it up than die on the toilet. This podcast taught me that is the appropriate thing to do though so this is now an educational podcast.

I've been through that, heading back to bed after having a hair of the dog and using the toilet - and I was naked and fainted in a space shared with the landlord's family (I was renting an attached bedsit). Thankfully no one encountered me (and sadly no one found me). Picked myself up, chucked up the drink in the kitchen sink, got back to bed. A blessing was realising I was getting too old for that stuff, and today I barely drink and my diet is more healthy.

I actually have a very similar story! I passed out due to the viso vagel response. It was after I had a nose surgery to fix my deviated septum and it was 2 days after my surgery and I went to the bathroom to turn on the shower and all of a sudden I started getting anxious and nauseous and my heart started beating a million times a minute. I sat down on the toilet because I just thought I was dizzy and needed food. Next thing I saw was a phone above that dialed 911 and my mom had me in her arms and my brother was on the phone with 911. My legs were folded under me because I just passed out will I was sitting on the toilet. Honestly I’m surprised I didn’t get hurt because the way the bathroom was situated I could have totally hit my head on the toilet or the shower door. After I woke my mom told me I had passed out twice and said hello in between passing out. Paramedics arrive shorty after and they could find my pulse because it was beating so fast. Apparently the pain meds were too much for me and made me pass out. 5 hours spent in the hospital and 4 bags of IV later I was sent home. Was the most traumatic experience I’ve been through and I can still remember passing out to this day. I remember I could see like a purple orb of light before I woke up and that’s all I remember.

This happened to me as well in the exact same way. I was already very sick with some sort of GI bug and went to use the bathroom. Like Sean, I got completely naked because that's just how it be sometimes. It started with an initial searing pain in my gut. It felt like I had been stabbed with an ice pick. Then came the wave of heat and lightheadedness, and I laid down on tile floor because I knew I was going to faint. Not sure how long I was out for but I was terrified that something was wrong with my brain when I woke up. I called my nurse friend the next day and she assured me that it was probably just a vasovagal response and I shouldn't be worried. Hasn't happened since. I'm just glad I didn't try to stand up because I definitely would have injured myself.

I understand Sean not realizing what happened and being freaked out after waking up. My mom woke me up to take my medicine and was really dizzy and just following her like a robot she set my cup of medicine on the counter and I went to reach for it and my arm was barley on the counter trying to hold myself up I blinked and the next thing I knew I was up against the wall with a cold towel on my head and my mom in front of me crying and hugging me. I will never ever forget that moment in my life. I’m grateful that you had people there with you that could help you and support you same goes for you too Ethan

When my anxiety attacks hit hard enough I feel my body to a degree that I convince myself my heart is stopping or my spine is damaged and it usually leads to me getting so tense and lightheaded that i pass out for a moment. It's never gotten to the point i hit my head but i get the sweats, strip down and lay on the floor until it passes. Now that i know a little more about the vegas nerve I'll look into it more. Knowing about my body helps to rationalize the feelings and get through it so thanks for the bit of knowledge.❤

I've seen stuff on stretches that react with the vagus nerve and create some relief for anxiety, so I could see it working the other way around! Maybe if you're just starting to get into a bad space, you could try the neck stretches, they're pretty simple -you can look it up pretty easily but it's mostly like, put one ear to the corresponding shoulder, place your hand on top of the other side of your head (don't push) and look in the opposite direction with just your eyes until you do a deep sigh. Idk if it's 100% effective but it's definitely calming.

I once fainted in the kitchen and hit my face on the freezer's edge (it was one of the ones thats like a big ice chest instead of like a fridge), when i woke up i didnt feel like anything was off but when my parents came to investigate they informed me i had a gash under my lip. This was like 6-7 years ago and i still have a scar beneath my lip. Another time, i fainted in my parents bedroom, which was the only room in our house that had carpet. When i woke up i didnt remember walking there, and no one was around and it was kinda dark so when i woke up on carpet i panicked and thought id been kidnapped. Of course i rather quickly realized where i was, but that split second of fear was probably one of the worst ive ever felt.
