Sealing and Mounting Transom Replacement for my 12 Ft Aluminum Jon Boat

CHAPTER 2-
=Sealing and Mounting the Transom for my 12 Ft Aluminum Jon Boat=
This is the second video for the new jon boat to bass boat build I am doing. In this video I will be sealing and mounting transom. I seal the transom in fiberglass resin and then mount it permanently into the 12 ft aluminum jon boat. I'll show you the wood prepping process before laying down the resin to seal and waterproof the transom. I'll perform prep work on the aluminum, then carefully glue and bolt the new transom replacement into place. Of course I will include details step by step through the process and all tools and materials needed to perform the task at hand on this jon boat project.
This is a continuing series documenting the build process of my new 12 ft jon boat project which will be a portable, trailerless, fishing boat. Whether you follow along to learn something or help with your jon boat project or just enjoy watching me on my boat project, hopefully you enjoy and can take something away from this process!
New videos coming every week documenting this ful build so stay tuned! Subscribe here and follow the build on Instagram: Adubjones .

    Nice job. I probably wouldn’t of glued the wood to the back of the aluminum though for the next guy so it’s not so hard to take apart.

    Good job man, it's always a little nerve racking drilling holes below the waterline. But that 5200 is the truth.

    Did you use 5200 to glue it to the aluminum?

    Awesome video!! So far, so good and your boat looks like it’s gonna turn out very nice!!! What grit sandpaper did you use to sand the aluminum transom before you mounted the wood? 120 like what you used to sand the wood after the resin cured?

  • @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats

    Yeah 120 but you can use 60, 80, or 120. I like 120 because it doesn't scratch the aluminum too bad but removes the paint well enough. 60 might gauge it to where you'll see scratches after paint. In my case it didn't matter because it was getting covered up. Thanks , it came out great, looking forward to showing you guys the metalwork in the next video, that's where it starts to really take shape

    Thanks for the reply/info. 👍 Looking forward to your next video! By the way, were you able to check out my Jon Boat intro (Part 1 & Part 2) I uploaded on my Channel? Curious to know what process I would need to take in order to get that JB Weld/Epoxy stuff off the bottom of the boat.

    @@MailmanDownEDC probably best to just sand it off, or if you get it cold enough chisel it off. I.e. dry ice on top of it.

    Same way as this. I left the original transom in tact and made a 1/2 inch cap and mounted it over the original. You can see pics on my Instagram. Its painted so it looks original but is not

    Do you think the ss bolts with the sealant would be watertight for the floor of my jon boat? I am going to put in a new transom and the factory one has a 45 degree support bracket going to the floor held with four rivets which probably will need to get removed to get the new wood in. I could permanently remove the support and seal up the four holes or put it back and use ss bolts. So wondering what you think?

  • @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats

    @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats

    I'd personally try to drill rivets out and go back w solid rivet in larger diameter. You could use a bolt though, id use nylon lock nuts and 3m 5200 around the head real good.

    @@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats Thanks so much for the feedback. Will explore solid rivets. Was also thinking of closed end pop rivets but probably too weak. So either solid rivets or bolts.

    JB Water-weld works great. Pop a rivet into the hole and 'waterweld' it or get a $20 tube of 3M

    Why do u glue it to the boat? Wont that make it extremely hard to remove when it inevitably needs to be taken out?

  • @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats

    @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats

    I don't plan on removing any time in the next 20 years. By then the glue probably wont be doing its job. Transom wasthin and shot, wanted to glue to hold it and not have any air voids. Boats are a case by case basis.
