Nice spotting Tony, nice netting Denzil and nice removal Naude. It's bad enough that the poor seal was entangled and to already have a wound, but to have to extract it from the net's zipper is like another horrible rescue. Thanks, OCN heroes, for being there 💙

We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

Although I’m sure that it isn’t always possible, Denzil seems to always hold the line before using the hook. Just a little thing, but it prevents the line from digging into the open wound when the line is cut. It’s those little things that show the care that he and the others have towards their patients. Cape fur seals thrive in their natural habitat, away from humans, and seawater acts as a very efficient wound cleaner. Thus far, we have never encountered a dead fur seal with the scar of a previous entanglement. It might unfortunately happen, but we believe our success rate is very high.
